Gauge Types 1. Commercial Gauges - These are standard gauges used to inspect or gauge radii or fillets visually.

- They are the most common type of gauges

2. Screw Pitch Gauge - A screw pitch gauge is used to determine the pitch of a screw. - A screw pitch gauge does not check thread size and will not give adequate thread form for precision parts

Figure 2. Screw pitch gauge and method of application.

3. Plug Gauge - Plug gauges are used to inspect the diameter of holes - A plug gauge consists of two members: the go end, and the no-go or not-go end - A plug gauge consists of two parts: the gauging member and the handle - Plug gauges are made to follow the American Gauge Design (AGD) standard 3 types of AGD standard plug gauges: a. Single-end has 2 separate gage members, each having its own handle. b. Double-end consists of 2 gauge members mounted on a single handle, with one gauge member on each end.

c. Progressive gauge - consists of a single gauge member mounted on a single handle. The frond two-thirds of the gauge member is ground to the go size and the remaining portion is ground to the no-go size.

3 methods of mounting gage members on the handle by AGD: a. Reversible wire-type The gauge member is simply a straight blank. It is held into the handle by a set screw or a collet chuck built into the handle. The gauge members can be reversed. b. Taper-lock design The gauge member is tapered on one end. It is not reversible. c. Trilock design The gauge member is held to the handle by means of a sockethead screw. It is reversible.

4. Ring Gauge - Ring gauges are used to inspect the diameter of shafts. - They are used in pairs, consisting of go and no-go members.

5. Snap Gauge - A snap gauge is a fixed gauge arranged with inside measuring surfaces for calipering diameters, lengths, thicknesses or widths. Types of snap gauge: a. Plain adjustable snap gage The distance between gauging members can be adjusted. b. Plain solid snap gage Has fixed, parallel, nonadjustable anvils. c. Thread-roll snap gage Used to control the size of the thread pitch diameter, lead of a thread, and thread form. d. Form-and-groove or blade-type snap gage Used to control the size of grooves or checking close shoulder diameters.

6. Flush-pin Gauge - A simple mechanical device used to measure linear dimensions or gauge the depth of holes. - Contains a body and a sliding pin or plunger.
