DESCRIPTION Australian Catholic University endeavours to develop students who are able to exercise moral and professional autonomy in a pluralistic society. The Mission Statement identifies the University as having a commitment to serving the common good with a fundamental concern for justice and equity, and for the dignity of all human beings. Recommendation 17 of the Implementation Plan for the Strategic Plan 1999 - 2008 supports the development of student awareness of social responsibility to the wider community. Graduates should be persons whose moral development is mature and who are professionally competent, and able to make significant contributions to the profession and the wider community. The Learning in the Community unit enables students to contribute to community service in tangible ways that may enable ethical, spiritual and personal development.

TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES Duration: Fifteen days, normally in the period between semesters. Students will normally be enrolled in Year 1 and/or Year 2 of the course. The Learning in the Community unit must be completed by the end of Year 2. Mode: Students undertake a period of voluntary service with a community organisation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: i. ii. iii. iv. demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes (GA1,GA2,GA5); demonstrate a heightened awareness of the ethical and social responsibility of decision makers in business, government and community organisations (GA4); reflect upon the impact of the community service experience on their values, assumptions and attitudes (GA1,GA2,GA4); communicate their reflections about the period of community service (GA1, GA2, GA4, GA5, and GA9).

GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES

Each unit in your course contributes in some way to the development of the ACU Graduate Attributes which you should demonstrate by the time you complete your course. You can view the ACU Graduate Attributes for all courses at http://www.acu.edu.au/204356. All Australian universities have their expected Graduate Attributes ACUs Graduate Attributes have a greater emphasis on ethical behaviour and community responsibility than those of many other universities. All of your units will enable you to develop some attributes.
On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed their ability to:
GA1 GA2 GA4 GA5 GA9 demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual and for human diversity recognise their responsibility to the common good, the environment and society think critically and reflectively demonstrate values, knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the discipline and/or profession demonstrate effective communication in oral and written English language and visual media

CONTENT Topics will include: Students will be able to select the organisation in which they serve for a total period of 15 days, from a list of participating non-profit community service organisations. Each student and the participating organisation will need to complete a placement agreement that clarifies the role to be performed by the student and the expectations of both parties. The service period may be completed in a full or part-time capacity depending upon the needs of the organisation. There is to be no payment for the service performed. The range of service activities undertaken may encompass serving as a general volunteer in an establishment conducted by one of the charitable or non-profit organisations, or assisting with a volunteer community project which may or may not be concerned with the visual arts and/or design. Some organisations may require students to undergo a background check because of the high 'duty of care' that those organisations have in relation to their clients. After completion of the period of volunteer experience a student may wish to retain her or his involvement with the participating organisation, but that involvement is entirely a matter between the student and the participating organisation.

The required hours for student service has been reduced to 105 hours from 120 hours (while 15 days has remained the same). SEU surveys are usually conducted at the end of the teaching period. Your practical and constructive feedback is valuable to improve the quality of the unit. Please ensure you complete the SEU survey for the unit. You can also provide feedback at other times to the unit lecturers, course coordinators and/or through student representatives.
