Renewable, sustainable energy

Worldwide demand for electricity is rising constantly due in part to the increasing population and the global need for energy in industry and infrastructure. Electricity generated by hydro power offers the critical advantage of being a clean and renewable resource when compared with the alternative option of using increasingly scarce fossil fuels. Schneider Electric participates actively in other emission free and environment friendly power generation plants such as wind and solar photovoltaic plants.

Your commitment to satisfying demand

The construction of new plants is a direct response to the current energy challenges: > To provide a constant supply of electricity > To supply energy at fixed cost whilst maintaining an adequate operating margin > To be flexible so as to adapt quickly to peaks in consumption > To support an environmental approach

Our commitment to you

As an expert in automation and electrical distribution, we are your partner in implementing your projects right from the outset and over the entire life cycle of your installations. > In collaboration with you, we design suitable solutions by combining our knowledge of your industry, the exibility of our systems, the quality of our products and the strength of an international network. > Rest assured that our sustainable development policy will take care of your plant's energy performance.

l Solutions for large hydro power plants

Your installation available 365 days a year

The level of electricity production must be maintained and guaranteed at all times as required by the Utilities Contracts Regulations. Control systems and electrical networks have to be designed for high performance and dependability. Our solution relies on a redundant hardware and software architecture.

Transparent redundant architectures

> Schneider Electric offers transparent, integral and scalable redundancy. The high degree of exibility means systems can be easily extended to avoid network failures and hardware faults. The result is a highly dependable optimised solution. > EtherNet/IP - the recognised industry standard network - provides a reliable, long-term solution for communication architectures requiring high levels of dependability. Communication adjusts easily to the level of dependability required, whether this is in terms of redundant network interfaces and/or media, self-healing bre optic rings or communication safeguards.

Wang Chun Yan

Site Operations Manager, China With a capacity of 1070megawatts, our facility creates a retaining reservoir of 450 square kilometres and 3.5billion cubic metres. It is essential that we have a reliable system operating constantly. Schneider Electric's HPPsolutions make sure of this. The high-dependability, redundant solutions developed for our plant mean we can deliver constant power quality, producing 6 billion kilowatt hours per year.

Installations available 24/7

> PLC redundancy avoids process downtime. In the event of a fault, there is a seamless, automatic changeover from the primary PLC to the standby PLC, which are both linked via a dedicated high-speed EtherNet/IP connection. Control system dependability can be enhanced by duplicating the I/O and the corresponding sensors and actuators.

l Solutions for large hydro power plants

For large-scale, complex hydro power plants, integrated Power & Control solutions are necessary to attain the desired level of performance. Such applications need to process a large amount of information exchanged between different parts of the plant. For this type of application, we supply dedicated HPP architectures and tools for the entire life cycle of a project, from design through to implementation, including modernisation.

Distributed control architectures: a exible solution

The infrastructure of hydro power plants demands greater exibility when setting up the process architectures. Because of the sheer quantity and variety of equipment involved - synchronisation module, injector control system, vibration control systems - connection to the central processing unit has to be simple.

> Our architectures are built around reliable, tested

industrial products which have been adapted for use in harsh environments.

> The decentralised supervisory system reduces

the number of technicians required on site.

> The modular nature of our solutions and

architectures facilitates expansion and modernisation of both the hardware and software alike.

> Distributed architectures are the perfect choice

for large installations, particularly when the plant comprises several turbine-generator units. Each unit is independent and controlled by a PLC and each sub-unit is connected to the SCADA system via an industrial network. This system allows the creation of reliable, exible solutions which can be adapted to any scenario depending on the number of units or devices to be connected.

> Communication between the PLCs and the

SCADA system is based on standard EtherNet/IP protocol for data exchange and synchronisation.

l Solutions for small hydro power plants

Supervise your sites from a single point

Small HPP sites are often spread across a very wide area. The distance is determined by the head of water that is necessary to generate the optimum production power. This results in vast networks with very specic needs dictated by the remoteness of the sites, the limited communication networks, difcult and costly maintenance, and the availability of the electricity supply.

An ideal remote management system

All connections between remote sites are periodic and characterised by cyclical exchanges generated by the central control system on an operator request or an event:
> Transmission of data between remote sites and the central supervisory system (SCADA) > Communication protocols (IEC 870..., DNP3, Modbus, etc.) > Media (cable, radio, GSM, modem, Internet, etc.) > Management of time-stamped events, metering and data buffering in case of connection failures

Wen Liu
Project Department Nanjing NARI Automatic Control Co., Ltd. Schneider Unity Collaborative Automation Platform provides a complete control system solution for the hydro power plant. This system offers intelligence of design, convenience of operation, rapidity of data processing and larger processing ability. The openness and collaboration illustrates the new concept of the control system where programing, debugging and operation are combined. The system solution satises our requirements for reliability. It is a practical and expandable solution for a hydropower supervision and control system. It operates on a redundant and open conguration, which ensures that all the system technologies are advanced, the structure is correct and that it functions perfectly.

SCADA: a central point

(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)

In view of the long distances between hydroelectric sites, integrated direct communication is the key to monitoring, setting up and maintaining such applications.
> Our offer features standard SCADA functions including scalability, recording, redundancy and diagnostics, as well as specic RTU functions such as IEC protocols and modem/time-stamped alarm/data management. Data can be exchanged easily in several common formats, including dBase, SQL and Oracle amongst others, for subsequent processing by ofce automation tools.

Invest in a sustainable solution

Micro hydro power plants represent a method of energy production which satises three main criteria for renewable energy - sustainable resources, respect for the environment and a production capability across a wide geographical area.

A truly customised solution

The majority of micro hydro power plants are managed by independent operators. Their priority is to ensure they have control and management equipment for their plant which offers:
> Ease of integration and implementation to create a global management system > On-demand reliability and dependability > Autonomous management of the control system > Simple diagnostics, on demand or by remote event-triggered alarms > Remote management via a web interface > A quick return on investment

A global solution
Our global Power & Control solution meets the requirements of micro HPP owners on all levels.
> The generator protection, grid connection, power metering and monitoring functions are assured by an autonomous GPC module connected to the remote management PLC. > The primary control unit in micro power plants is the PLC, which manages and monitors all plant parameters either locally or remotely. Easily congurable using a standard web browser, the PLC provides all the information relating to production, equipment status or the causes of any malfunctions. It sends alerts via GSM or allows you to view your plant via a webcam.

Bernard Mallet
CEO of Celaur Energies and operator of Chamalire-sur-Loire hydro power plant (France) As an independent electricity producer, I had to call upon several differently skilled specialists during the construction of our 400 kilowatt hydroelectric power plant. Schneider Electric was my one-stop shop for all electric equipments. I received a global solution encompassing the entire control system, the low and medium voltage electrical distribution, connection to the French electricity distribution network and the remote management capability. This approach allowed to optimise plant integrity and reliability.
