School, passable for the first year, became unbearable in the second, when the kind Miss Dear was supplanted by a hard case called Miss Turnbull. Dark, cold and impatient, Miss

Turnbull might have been the firm hand I needed, but already I was unable :&e:,.cEry | lft'3ggl$. I still can't today, tending to swing between nelvous flippancy and almost exaggerated respect. In those days, when I 10 was abollt a third of my present height and a quarter of the weight, there was nothing to do except duck. I did eveqzthing lg.gct, out of f ffii ufl to Miss Turnbull. I had Mondayitis

simultaneously. But there were some occasions when I ended 20 up at school no matter what I did. It was then revealed ihat I had Dropped Behind the Class. \7ords I could not recognise would come up on the spelling wheel. The spelling wheel

zs

was a thick card with a window in it and a cardboatd disc behind. As you turned the disc, words appeared one at a time in the window. I remember not being abie to pronounce the word 'the'. I pronounced it 'ter-her'. The whole class had collective hysterics. They

A group of students' tremendous exam results inspire them to return to school for one more term to try for the Oxford and Cambridge university entrance exams. Alan Bennett's award-winning ptay, which examines the shifting friendships and allegiances between the boys and their teachers, hits the big screen with as much energy as its rabble of teenagers. And yet something is lost in translaton 10 which never lets The Histo-ry Boys be as interesting as it tries and wants to be. White theatre challenges its actors and heaps praise on its writers, film is quite the other way round. The writing feels far more detached in an l' environment that favours realism, his characters resembting stereotypes and his teen cast delivering lines that teenagers, even from the eighties in which it is set, never would. Material, regardless of its quality, can only cross medium if it's been suitably adapted and there is not enough differentiation between the static, overly dramatic tone needed for stage and the faster paced, more emotionally subtle tone needed on fitm. Still, the titular History Boys - a few of whom are perhaps gfting on a bit to be abte to ptay betievable tnagers in a medium that favours the close-up - know their rotes inside out, finding moments of personality that simply wouldn't be found by actors approaching the material for the first time. And it's t:g,tbng to see a fitm which is this cerebral in its i_deas,. challenging its audience to reflect on the subjects the boys are learning. Original, on the big screen at least, and 35 entertaining in spite of its problems, The History Boys remains a fine example of Britain's talents both in front of and behind the camera.
