11b

Industrial Ethernet offers a high-performance area and cell network including field area on the basis of international standards (IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.11b) for area networking. With its current share of over 80%, Industrial Ethernet is the number one network in the LAN landscape world-wide. It has been specifically designed for applications in harsh Industrial environments and offers powerful data communications. In addition, Ethernet also offers the basic technologies for Intranet and Internet, plus a multitude of options for integration into global networking. The wide range of possibilities offered by the Intranet, Extranet and Internet which are already available in the office environment can also be used in factory automation and process automation. The already well-proven Ethernet technology in combination with Switching, Full Duplex and Autosensing gives you the opportunity to match the performance of your network more precisely to the requirements.

The bus systems AS-Interface and PROFIBUS are used for data exchange up to the field area. These use the process or field communication for data transmission in order to link actuators and sensors to a control system. Industrial Ethernet offers industry-capable communications components which can be used to set up both electrical networks and optical networks. Thanks to the switching technology the ranges are virtually limitless. In addition, Industrial Ethernet offers the option of mobile communications, which can be seamlessly integrated into your network structure. As a result, information is readily available anywhere and at any time, and mobile access to the Intranet/Internet is made possible.

Industrial Ethernet uses data communication to exchange data up to the field area. It is used between either two automation devices or between one automation device and intelligent communication partners (PC, computer etc.).

PROFInet-capable products
At Siemens, PROFInet is used for the implementation of Component based Automation. This allows the advantages of component technology, which are already established in the software world, to be exploited for modular design of installations and machines. In this way exceptional productivity gains can be achieved in engineering and during commissioning.

Solution options with Industrial Ethernet

With Industrial Ethernet it is possible to build up large and powerful redundant networks. Components which are designed specifically for industry enable problem-free data exchange over long distances.

Accordingly, robust network components form the backbone of industrial communication for a multitude of applications, e.g. electrical or optical components in linear, ring or star layouts, with 10 or 100 Mbit/s. The connections of the active components on the network are implemented using

communications processors which, depending on the target system, are available in different designs, performance classes and for different applications. Industrial Ethernet with its universally applicable SIMATIC NET components is used in a wide variety of industrial fields.

Sample applications from the manufacturing industry and the process industry Automotive manufacturing
In automotive manufacturing it is possible to implement production lines with variable speeds or installation control systems for use while the production line is in operation. Flexible controls need to be available for many of the variables in order to ensure that production is uninterrupted. In this context plant availability is becoming increasingly more important. Downtimes for repairs are usually more expensive than suitable monitoring systems which monitor installations for wear and possible faults. Using powerful communication components, it is possible, for example, to quickly locate and indicate faults.

Industrial Ethernet Solution options

Food and beverages

The flow of materials from the initial delivery e.g. of potatoes through the sorting and storage processes right up to the point where the goods are taken out of storage and the packaged items are transported is programmed in advance, and can be modified on the master computer if the capacity utilized or the requirements change. The operating states and aggregates of conveyor systems can be monitored and influenced just as easily as the filling of silos. In this case the co-ordination of different sorting installations is just as much a commununications duty as the automatic individual ventilation of the potatoes.

Food and beverages

Building automation
Building automation is already well-established in multi-story car parks. Free spaces are already indicated at the entrance to the car park and arrows are used to show the motorist the shortest route to a free space. A contact-free sensor mounted on the ceiling operates as a parking space monitor, regularly checking the space by means of ultrasound. An alarm is raised in the control center if somebody drives the wrong way up an access ramp or if a line starts to form. A high-performance communications processor collects and co-ordinates the data, and then visualizes them for example on a computer.

Building automation

Waste waters
The purification of waste water requires special properties for automation components and communications system such as suitability for use in given temperature ranges, resistance to EMC disturbances or rapid messaging in the event of a fault. Filter lines, pumps and measuring devices can be monitored and controlled from the control office to ensure a smooth flow of processes in the installation. High-performance communications reliably convey the corresponding data from the sensors to the control office. There, these data can for example be visualized and controlled by using a computer.

Industrial Ethernet Networking capabilities

Networks with switching technology

Switched Industrial Networks can be built up either electrically or optically, both in a linear structure as well as in redundant ring structures. The structure incorporates either an OSM(Optical Switch Module) or an ESM (Electrical Switch Module). Transmissions between the modules take place on fiber optic cables for OSM or TP/ITP cables for ESM. Terminal devices and network segments are connected using TP or ITP lines. The expansion capabilities of switched networks are virtually limitless. Signal run times need to be taken into account from distances of 150 km. The switching functionality has decisive advantages: It is possible to form subnetworks and network segments. The data throughput and therefore the network performance can be significantly increased as a result of structuring the data traffic. The network configuration rules are easy to apply. Network topologies with 50 OSMs and an overall range of up to 150 km are easy to realize, with no need to take signal run times into account. Limitless expansion of the network range is possible by connecting individual collision domains/ subnetworks. Switches allow existing networks to be expanded easily and without retroactive effects.

Networks in a linear structure with switching functionality

The Electrical Lean Switches (ELS) have been specially optimized for setting up Industrial Ethernet networks with 10/100 Mbit/s in a linear structure in the field area. In addition to switching technology, they are equipped with integrated FastConnect (FC) connection technology for quick and easy connection of the FC lines (see page 10). The ELS are designed for use in a switching cabinet.

Industrial Ethernet Redundant networks

Redundancy in the network

It is vital for industrial applications that the network reconfiguration time is as fast as possible after a fault, otherwise, the connected terminal devices will disconnect their logical communications connections. Redundant networks increase the overall security and reduce installation down times. In order to achieve the extremely fast reaction times which are required, SIMATIC NET uses a specially developed technique to control the standby function. This ensures that a network can be reconfigured to a functioning network infrastructure within fractions of a second.

The standby software S7-REDCONNECT can be used to link PCs to the high-availability SIMATIC S7-H system. As a result, SIMATIC S7-H redundant systems protect against downtimes of the installation. In the event of failure of a subsystem or breakage of a wire, the system switches over to the backup system or backup network (dual bus, redundant ring), which allows it to keep the communications intact.

Industrial Ethernet Integration of existing 10 Mbit/s triaxial networks

The network component ELM (Electrical Link Module) can be used to integrate existing 10 Mbit/s triaxial networks without any problems into new 100 Mbit/s networks with switching technology. Expansion with switching technology offers the following advantages: You can continue to use your knowledge of existing technology. There is no need to learn a completely new technology. The fast switching technology is available for immediate efficient use. Industrial Ethernet offers the option of a step-by-step migration from 10 Mbit/s to the 100 Mbit/s technology. Existing networks can be integrated and expanded step-by-step. In addition, ELM enables the connection of up to three terminal devices using a twisted pair interface to an existing triaxial network or to an industrial twisted pair network.

Industrial Ethernet ELM

The Industrial Ethernet ELM (Electrical Link Module) is a DIN rail repeater to IEEE 802.3 with three industrial twisted pairs (ITP) and an AUI interface. It enables the connection of up to three terminal devices by using an industrial twisted pair interface to an existing triaxial network or to an industrial twisted pair network. This means that it can also be operated as a stand-alone module for smaller networks. Accordingly, it is possible to create the transition from a 10 Mbit/s network to a 100 Mbit/s network with the aid of an ELM.

Industrial Ethernet Structured cabling and FastConnect

Structured cabling
In accordance with EN 50173, the term structured cabling describes the non-application-specific, tree-like cabling systems for information technology purposes in building complexes. A site is divided into the following areas: Primary area: Connections between buildings in a site Secondary area: Connections between floors within a building Tertiary area: Information technology connections for terminal devices within a floor The structured cabling which can be realized with the Industrial Ethernet FastConnect System corresponds to tertiary cabling to EN 50173.

FastConnect system
The FastConnect stripping technology allows quick and easy connection of Industrial Ethernet FC cables to the outlet RJ45 or ELS TP40/ ELS TP40M. The terminal devices and network components are connected using TP cords. The special structure of the Industrial Ethernet FastConnect cables permits use of the Industrial Ethernet FastConnect stripping tool, which allows the outer sleeve and the braiding to be accurately stripped back in a single operation. Cables prepared in this way are connected in the FastConnect outlet RJ45 or ELS TP40/ELS TP40M with cutting/clamping technology.

Position the cable on the measuring scale to measure the length of cable to be stripped. The index finger of the left hand is used as a stop to mark the length.

Insert the measured length of cable into the tool. Use the index finger of the left hand again as a marker to ensure that the correct length of cable is inserted.

Tighten the cable end to the stop in the stripping tool.

To strip the cable rotate the stripping tool several times in the direction of the arrow.

Pull off the stripping tool (still closed) from the end of the cable.

Pull off the protective film from the individual wires.

After stripping the industrial Ethernet FC cable it can be assembled directly into the outlet RJ45.

FC Outlet RJ45
The Industrial Ethernet FC Outlet RJ45 is used for the transition from the robust Industrial Ethernet FC cables used in industrial environments to pre-assembled TP cord cables with an RJ45 socket. By connecting several FC Outlet RJ45 units in series it is possible to build up a patch field with a freely selectable connection density (e.g. 16 outlets on a width of 19 is possible).

Electrical network components Industrial Ethernet ESM

Industrial Ethernet ESM

The ESM (Electrical Switch Module) enables switched networks with 100 Mbit/s to be built up cost-effectively. A decoupling of loads and therefore an increase in network performance can be achieved in existing networks through segmentation (division of a network into subnetworks/segments) and connection of these segments to an ESM. The standby manager which is integrated into the ESM permits the building of redundant Industrial Ethernet ring structures with switching technology and fast media redundancy (max. reconfiguration time 0.3 seconds). Electrical rings are set up with 2 twisted pair ports of the ESM. The data transfer rate in the ring is 100 Mbit/s, and up to 50 ESMs can be used in each ring. In addition to the 2 ring ports, the ESM has a further 6 ports (optionally either with ITP or RJ45 interface), to which both terminal devices and network segments can be connected. Several rings can be connected together redundantly using the integrated standby function. Three options are available for signaling errors: using indicator contacts using SNMP (traps) by e-mail The network topology can be easily adapted with ESM to the plant structure. The following network structures and resulting combinations can be realized: Linear structures and star structures with ESM: The cascading depth and the network size are only limited by the signal run times With ESM, an overall size of up to 5 km is easily possible Structuring of existing networks by connecting individual subnetworks to ESM Electrical 100 Mbit/s rings with fast media redundancy (up to 50 ESMs per ring; max. reconfiguration time 0.3 seconds)

Optical network components Industrial Ethernet OMC and OSM

Industrial Ethernet OMC

The Industrial Ethernet OMC TP11 and OMC TP11-LD (Optical Media Converter) enable the targeted use of fiber optic cables in Industrial Ethernet networks. 100 Mbit/s full duplex twisted pair interfaces of terminal devices or network components are converted to fiber optic cable interfaces with the aid of OMC. This allows for example the following applications to be realized: Integration of a single remote terminal device or a remote subnetwork using fiber optic cable into an Industrial Ethernet network. The maximum length for the fiber optic cable is: with multimode fiber optic cable and OMC TP11 3 km or with OMC TP11-LD and monomode fiber optic cable 26 km. Integration of a stretch of fiber optic cable into a redundant ring with ESM by connecting two OMCs and fiber optic cables in between Equipotential bonding measures or lightning protection devices are not required when using OMC and fiber optic cables. OMC pass on error states detected at one of the ports to the other port. Therefore they can be integrated into redundant rings or redundant connecting stretches between rings (connection of OMC at the coupling or ring ports of OSM TP/ESM). The ability of the media converters to function properly can be monitored via the indicator contact.

Fig. 16 Industrial Ethernet OMC

Industrial Ethernet OSM

The OSMs (Optical Switch Modules) enable cost-effective building of switched networks with 100 Mbit/s. A decoupling of loads and therefore an increase in network performance can be achieved in existing networks through segmentation (division of a network into subnetworks/ segments) and connection of these segments to an OSM. The standby manager which is integrated into the OSM permits the building of redundant Industrial Ethernet ring structures with switching technology and fast media redundancy (max. reconfiguration time 0.3 seconds).

redundancy (up to 50 Industrial Ethernet OSMs per ring; max. reconfiguration time 0.3 seconds) Hierarchically redundant rings: Individual redundant rings (10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s) are connected using two Industrial Ethernet OSMs which already exist in the ring to a higher-level 100 Mbit/s ring. Fast media redundancy can be realized for the individual rings and their redundant coupling. With Industrial Ethernet OSM ITP53 the connection between OSM rings can also be implemented with fiber optic cables.

With the OSM BC08 it is possible to set

up a redundant optical star: With two Industrial Ethernet OSM BC08 units in standby mode it is possible to build up a high-performance redundant optical backbone network for connection of up to 8 subnetworks. As the subnetworks are directly connected to each other via an Industrial Ethernet OSM, it is also possible for several subnetworks to exchange data at the maximum data transfer rate at the same time.

14

Optical network components Network management and diagnosis with OSM and ESM

The network management offers the following functions: Password-protected dial-in for "Administrator" (read and write access rights) and "User" (read access rights only) Readout of version and status information Adjustment of the message window and the standby window and of address information Fixed parameterization of the ports and filter table Output of statistical information Diagnosis of data traffic using a parameterizable mirror port Loading of new Firmware versions of the OSM/ESM using the network. In the event of faults occurring in the network the OSM can automatically send error messages (traps) to a network management system or also by e-mail to a nominated network administrator. Remote monitoring (RMON) offers the following functions: OSM and ESM are capable of gathering statistical information in accordance with the RMON groups 1 to 4. These include for example fault statistics which are maintained for each port. This information can be read out from the Statistics area of the OSM via the web-based management system.

Network interfaces IE/PB Link

As an independent component, the IE/PB link forms a seamless transition between Industrial Ethernet and PROFIBUS. For example, operating systems and monitoring systems can simply access the field devices on the PROFIBUS from the Industrial Ethernet. This allows vertical integration from the control level down to the field level. The IE/PB link supports the PROFInet functionality. It is used for Component based Automation on the basis of the PROFInet standard of the PNOs. The IE/PB link also offers the following functions: PROFInet communication The IE/PB link supports the PROFInet communication services for exchange of data between the PROFInet devices and the proxy for PROFIBUS devices. S7 routing Enables inter-network PG/OP communications, i.e. all S7 stations can be remotely programmed from the programming device on the Industrial Ethernet or PROFIBUS. Visualization data for S7 stations on the PROFIBUS can be accessed from operating and monitoring stations via the Industrial Ethernet. Data record routing. This makes it possible for example to use SIMATIC PDM (on the PC) to parameterize and diagnose a PROFIBUS field device over the Industrial Ethernet via the IE/PB link.

Connection options to the Industrial Ethernet Communications processors for Industrial Ethernet

The communications processors of SIMATIC NET can be used for applications at the field level, in process automation or for wireless communications. Effectiveness and efficiency are vital for the solution concepts for plant components and automation tasks. Accordingly, the requirements for communication performance are very high in terms of the data transfer rate. The communications processors offer a constant data throughput as a result of their pre-processing of the protocol. They realize fast reaction times with stable high levels and avoid fluctuating levels of communications performance. The CPs ease the strain on the terminal device in terms of communications tasks and only take up very few resources there.

S7-400

PLC as an element of communication

Programmable controllers (PLCs) play a central role in the world of automation. And in the process the industrial communications represent the nerve fibers. The SIMATIC NET PLC-CPs play a key role in industrial communications. They offer the following advantages: CPs for all formats of SIMATIC, e.g. SIMATIC S7-300/-400. Thanks to the open communications with standards the SIMATIC can communicate with every other device. SIMATIC NET increases the availability of plant sections which are networked together in a modular layout, in the same way that electrical power supplies are also implemented in individual electrical circuits. SIMATIC S7 controls can be integrated via the standard protocols TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP and FTP in higher-level software systems like MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and MIS (Management Information System). This is even simpler with SIMATIC NET products for Windows PCs, which offer an OPC interface and are embedded in the SIMATIC engineering system.

Potential applications for communications Communications processors for SIMATIC S7

Different communications processors are available for connecting to the SIMATIC S7. The design of these processors differs according to their target systems, i.e. there are different ones for for SIMATIC S7-200, SIMATIC S7-300 and SIMATIC S7-400. The communications processors are all designed for use in harsh industrial environments and can be used throughout a wide temperature range. In addition they are also certified for ship building (ABS) to enable their use on ships or offshore units. They are equipped with RJ45 connection technology and can therefore be integrated into the industry-suitable cabling system of SIMATIC NET. The data transfer rate of 10 and 100 Mbit/s permits fast data transmissions with large quantities of data. The CPs are equipped with S7 communication as standard; CP 243-1, CP 343-1 and CP 443-1 are standard processors. In addition to the standard processes, SIMATIC NET also offers communications processors with expanded functions which open up a variety of different opportunities. CP 343-1 IT and CP 443-1 IT with IT functionality plus CP 343-1 PN for use with PROFInet functionality.

Fig. 26: CP 243-1 for S7-200

CP 243-1 for S7-200

The CP 243-1 forms the connection to SIMATIC S7-200 and enables a data exchange with the S7-200 and S7-300 or S7-400 controls using Industrial Ethernet. The CP can communicate through up to 8 connections to other Ethernet users, whereby the CP can play the role of both Client and Server. PC applications can access the data of a S7-200 with CP 243-1 using the standardized, open and manufacturer-independent OPC interface. The software package SOFTNET-S7 is required to access the data. In this way the process data can be visualized, archived or further processed with the aid of a PC, e.g. with PC applications like WinCC or WinAC.

Fig. 28: CP 443-1 for S7-400

CPs for S7-300 and S7-400

The CP 343-1 and CP 443-1 communications processors form the connection to the Industrial Ethernet for the relevant SIMATIC S7. They are equipped with Autosensing (10/100 Mbit/s) with the operating modes HDX (Half Duplex) and FDX (Full Duplex) with a connection for automatic detection of operating modes.

They offer universal connection possibilities for ITP, RJ45 and AUI as well as the capability for processing several different protocols at the same time, e.g. ISO, TCP and UDP transport protocol (CP 343-1 PN: no ISO). The remaining communications services like PG/OP communications and S5-compatible communications (SEND/RECEIVE) complete this area of application in industrial environments.

Potential applications for communications processors Communications processors for SIMATIC S7

The Industrial Ethernet communications processors for SIMATIC offer the following advantages: Many users can be reached through the use of UDP connections or multicast functions. It is possible to use the socket interface in the partner system. Clock synchronization is provided using the NTP (Network Time Protocol) (with CP 443-1 and CP 443-1 IT). The KeepAlive function is selectable. The SIMATIC S7 can be integrated into complex installations using Industrial Ethernet with 10/100 Mbit/s and into existing installations using S5-compatible communications. The CPs also enable remote programming and initial commissioning through the telephone network (e.g. ISDN) thanks to the WAN properties of TCP/IP. One module for different applications: PG/PC, operating and monitoring systems (multiplexing of the OP communications; up to 16 OPs can be connected), SIMATIC S5/S7. An extensive diagnosis is provided using the NCM S7, including the operating status of the CP, general diagnosis functions and statistical functions, diagnosis of connections, LAN controller statistics, diagnostic buffer. The project planning is performed with the options package NCM S7 for Industrial Ethernet (integrated in STEP 7). The following CPs differ from the standard communications processors in terms of these additional functions:

Fig. 29: CP 343-1 PN for S7-300

CP 343-1 IT and CP 443-1 IT

The CP 343-1 IT for the S7-300 or CP 443-1 IT for the SIMATIC S7-400 can send e-mails and perform simple visualization tasks using web technology and file processing (FTP). The CPs act as universal data couplings for the SPC to different computers using the FTP.

The file system of these CPs can also be managed with the CPU. This serves as a mass memory, system-wide computer linking and as a storage location for HTML pages and JAVA applets. In addition to the HTML pages, the CPs can for example also fit in machine documentation or user guides in their large filing systems. The transmission of event-controlled messages using IT communications paths with e-mail can take place both globally and locally. In addition they also realize access to process information (password-protected) with standard web browsers, as a result of which the Clients software costs are reduced. The CP 343-1 IT and CP 443-1 IT can be used as modules for different applications: PG/PC, Control systems and monitoring systems, SIMATIC S5/S7 and IT communications

Potential applications for communications Communications processors for PG/PC

Options with OPC

OPC (OLE for Process Control) is used from Windows NT as an expansion of the communication interfaces COM (Component Object Model) and DCOM (Distributed COM) for the user software. The basic principle of OPC is that OPC client applications communicate on a standardized/open and therefore manufacturer-independent interface with the OPC server. Integration into already available OPC-capable Windows applications (Office 97 or HMI systems) is possible. With the OPC server, this standard interface makes it easy to use different networks and different protocols. The different OPC servers (except the PN OPC server) are included in the communication software. The S7-OPC server is available for S7 communications, alarms and events as well as S5-compatible communications (SEND/RECEIVE). The S7-OPC server offers: Standardized access to SIMATIC S7 and SIMATIC S5 for OPC-capable applications under Windows NT Continuity between automation products from different manufacturers The same easy-to-use user interface is used for different components Accessible from every computer in the LAN/WAN High-performance data access using the custom interface (C++) Easy-to-use with the "Automation Interface" (VB) or the supplied OCX DataControl Grouping of variables (items); this allows a large quantity of data to be processed in a short time

Industrial Ethernet Wireless communication options

Wireless communications are particularly advantageous where the user can only be integrated with difficulty into a cablebased infrastructure. These include for example the mobile recording of data in production and logistics, the transmission of service data to mobile terminals or the commissioning of complex plants with the aid or programming devices which are connected without cables. Another aspect in favor of the use of mobile communications is the replacement of cable-based solutions, for example in order to solve the problem of potential separation on communications installations which are far apart. In addition, mobile communications can save on infrastructure used for temporary installations or flexible production plants which is both expensive and timeintensive to install. In addition to the wireless network connections, other basic requirements for mobile industrial communications are a degree of robustness towards the harsh industrial environment, simple controls and a compact design.

Integration of mobile communications into an existing LAN

Wireless LAN components can easily be integrated into already existing Ethernet LANs uing an RJ45 connection. The Access Point RLM can be operated as a stand-alone module and is mainly connected to a wire-based Ethernet network. The connection of several RLMs provides mobile users with a wireless network. By using several RLMs with an overlapping range it can be ensured that the communications to mobile users remain intact. This is done by passing the communications link from one access point to another (roaming).

Network management can be performed in a user-friendly manner by using a browser with MOBIC. Here, an RLM is connected to an existing Industrial Ethernet network either using an Optical Switch Module (OSM) or using an Electrical Switch Module (ESM). In the process the RLM realizes the wireless communications to the MOBIC. The OSM or ESM performs the following network management functions: Locally on the module Using the serial interface and PC with Terminal-Emulation with command line (CLI Command Line Interface). Industrial Ethernet Wireless communication options

The connection of the MOBIC Internet pad (Mobile Industrial Communicator) to the Industrial Ethernet can take place directly by using an RJ45 interface or via a wireless radio link.

Internet Pad MOBIC

The MOBIC (Mobile Industrial Communicator) is a mobile, industrycapable Internet pad which enables access to central information regardless of location. These data records can be accessed with a web browser or thin client or by means of application programs. This allows information to be displayed for example from the Intranet/Internet, and also makes mobile data recording possible. The mobile connection is provided using wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b) or GSM. With the wireless LAN, MOBIC communicates in the installation using the PCMCIA card (e.g. CP 1515) with the wireless LAN access points (e.g. RLMs). The MOBIC is equipped with the following: One PCMCIA radio interface enables the connection to wireless local networks, e.g. with CP 1515 communications processor. In order to also make MOBIC capable for wireless long-distance networks, a second PCMCIA connection is available for a GSM module. The PCMCIA connection is also suitable for distributed devices such as barcode readers or memory expansion cards. With the Windows CE web browser and Java Virtual Machine it is possible to dial into the local Intranet or into the World Wide Web in order to call up or check information such as process data and diagnostic data, circuit diagrams and building diagrams, work instructions or product information, or to pass on data recorded on-site.

Industrial Ethernet Wireless communication options

RLM (Radio Link Module)

With the Industrial Ethernet RLM (Radio Link Module) it is possible to set up a wireless network or link mobile users to a stationary Industrial Ethernet network. The CP 1515 is integrated into the RLM. This means that, as the access point, the RLM realizes the transition between the wireless and wire-base networks. On the one hand the access point RLM has the job of managing the radio connection to the CP 1515, and on the other hand it is also responsible for setting up the connection to a local network. The RLM can be configured with the configuration tool "AP-Manager".

Abbreviations, Terms ITP (Category 5) IT JVM

Explanations Industrial Twisted Pair, particularly efficiently shielded twisted pair cable for universal application (intern. wiring standard ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173). Information technology with e-mail and web technology at Siemens Java Virtual Machine, Java is a platform-independent object-orientated programming language similar to C++. However, the Java compiler does not generate any native machine code, but instead a byte code which needs to be interpreted. This is done with the aid of the so-called Java Virtual Machine. Wiring components are divided into different categories according to their transmission characteristics. In the individual categories various physical limits are defined (e.g. maximum signal attenuation at a defined transmission frequency). Category 3: data transmission up to 16 MHz Category 4: data transmission up to 20 MHz Category 5: data transmission up to 100 MHz Category 6: data transmission up to 200 MHz (draft standard) Local Area Network. Due to the filtering a switch ensures that local data traffic remains local. This means that the local network load of a segment is decoupled from the rest of the network. Redundancy in the network infrastructure (cables and active components as OSM or ESM. OLE for Process Control, standard interface for accessing process data. Optical Switch Module, network component for Industrial Ethernet with switch functionality. Polymer Cladded Fiber, fiber optic cable with glass core and plastic casing. Standard for PC plug-in cards (credit card sized). PCMCIA cards (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) are mainly used for input/output (e.g. modem) or memory expansions. PROFInet, standard defined by the PROFIBUS user organization for realization of Component based Automation. Symmetrical connector for data lines, is also known as a Western Plug. Commonly used connector in telephone and ISDN technology also used in LAN installations in offices. Radio Link Module; wireless LAN access point of SIMATIC NET. Property of wireless LAN systems which allows free movement of wireless LAN users even beyond the limits of the radio cell of an access point. The user can change from one radio cell to the next without any noticeable interruption, provided the transmission properties are better in this radio cell. Time taken by a data package to make its way through the network Simple Network Management Protocol, standardized protocol for the transport of network management information. Screened/Shielded Twisted Pair; with this cable structure the individual twisted pairs of a twisted pair cable are enclosed in a shielding film. The two individual shielded wire pairs are enclosed in shared copper braiding. Simultaneous buildup of several connections between the ports. These connections are established dynamically on a temporary basis depending on the data traffic.

Industrial Ethernet Abbreviations, Explanation of terms

Abbreviations, Terms TCP/IP Thin Client

Explanations Transport Control Protocol, Internet protocol, de-facto standard; protocol for global communications using the Ethernet. Client computer operating in a server network. The Thin Client has direct access to the data and applications of all of the servers in the network. The applications are executed on the server and are only visualized on the Thin Client". Totally Integrated Automation, fully integrated and coordinated system for automation at Siemens with regard to coordinated project planning/programming, data management and communications. Data cable with twisted wire pairs, the twist in the wire pairs provides good transmission characteristics and prevents electromagnetic disturbances. Twisted Pair cables are available in different qualities for different transmission rates. User Datagram Protocol, connectionless data transmission, i.e. a datagram service which does not enable a secure transmission. The user is responsible for ensuring a secure transmission. The data are transmitted as a data block. This makes it possible to transmit data without an RFC 1006. Wide Area Network, data network with a diameter of more than 50 km. Communications between users take place using electromagnetic waves which are transmitted through the atmosphere.
