Understanding the Intercession of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the Light of the Quran
By Bassam Zawadi
There is a great misconception amongst the Muslim community that Prophet Muhammad has divine capabilities in order to save people from the Hell fire. That the Prophet Muhammad has the ability to give people salvation by intercession. This is nothing more than a myth. The intercession of the Prophet is nothing more than Honor that Allah (swt) has given him. When the Prophet intercedes for a Muslim it is not the Prophet that chooses whom he should intercede for. !f the Prophet had the ability to intercede for whomever he wants he would intercede for his mother or uncle Abu Talib whom he loved so dearly. "ome Muslims might argue that the Prophet will only intercede for Muslims and the Prophets mother and uncle were not Muslims. However reading further into this article will disprove that theory. !t is Allah that chooses whom the Prophet should intercede for. He gives the Prophet the honor of intercession. To understand this better let me illustrate it with an e#ample. At a graduation party someone is given the honor of handing the degrees over to the graduates. The person handing the degrees to the graduates does not have the power to determine who graduates or not the university does. However the person has the honor of handing out the degrees to the graduates that the university has handpic$ed. This is the same thing when Allah hand pic$s those who shall enter heaven and simply gives the Prophet the honor to intercede for them. We should all reflect on the following verses from the %lorious &uran regarding intercession. "urah '()* Give this warning to those in whose (hearts) is the fear that they will be brought (to judgment) before their Lord: e#cept for Him they will have no protector nor intercessor( that they may guard (against evil).

"urah +,(-+.--

"urah '(45 Leave alone those who ta!e their religion to be mere #lay and amusement, and are de eived by the life of this world. $ut #ro laim (to them) this (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own a ts: it will find for itself no protector or intercessor e#cept %od( if it offered every ransom, (or re#aration), none will be a e#ted: su h is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own a ts: they will have for drin! "urah *5(*6 %hey serve, besides God, things that hurt them not nor #rofit them, and they say: "%hese are our inter essors with God." &ay: "'o ye indeed inform God of something He !nows not, in the heavens or on earth( ) Glory to Him* and far is He above the #artners they as ribe (to Him)*" "urah +7(It is God +ho has reated the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in si, 'ays, and is firmly established on the %hrone (of -uthority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you)( will ye not then receive admonition1 "urah -(*7+ .ot your desires, nor those of the /eo#le of the $oo! "urah 7(7)1 ye who believe* &#end out of (the bounties) +e have #rovided for you, before the 'ay omes when no bargaining (Will avail) nor friendship nor intercession. %hose who reje t 2aith they are the wrong)doers. These verses e#plicitly show that no one9s intercession will help you. :nly %od can. ;ets loo$ at the ne#t set of verses.... "urah +-(7+ 28o intercession can avail in His Presence e#cept for those for whom He has granted permission. &o far (is this the ase) that, when terror is removed from their hearts (at the 'ay of 3udgment, then) will they say, 4what is it that your Lord ommanded(4 they will say, 4%hat whi h is true and just5 and He is the 6ost High 6ost Great4." "urah 75(*5,

1n that 'ay shall no intercession avail e#cept for those for whom permission has been granted by (%od) 6ost Gra ious and whose word is a e#table to Him. "urah 7(7)) God* %here is no god but He, ) the Living, the &elf)subsisting, Eternal. .o slumber an sei7e Him nor slee#. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence e#cept as He permitteth1 He !noweth what (a##eareth to His reatures as) before or after or behind them. .or shall they om#ass aught of His !nowledge e, e#t as He willeth. "urah 7*(76 He !nows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they offer no intercession e#cept for those who are acceptable and they stand in awe and reveren e of His (Glory). "urah )+(7' How many)so)ever be the angels in the heavens, and that he is a e#table to Him. their intercession will avail nothing e#cept after %od has given leave for whom He pleases "o this shows that Muhammad9s intercession really means nothing and is completely useless unless %od willed it to be useful. %od chooses whom Muhammad should give intercession to and this is the honor that the Prophet has. $a ! to 8ebuttals, and e,#osing the lies of the -nswering Islam team se tion. /ro#het 6uhammad4s (#ea e be u#on him) se tion. 9ontradi tions and History of 9orru#tion in the $ible. $assam :awadi4s 8ebuttals se tion.
