Module Name: Module Code:

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)

NC 22-2

Module Description
This module builds upon the knowledge gained through LAN module in respect of TCP/IP protocol. TCP/IP is the de facto standard suite of networking protocols of todays networks. The role played by TCP/IP suite of protocols is very significant in todays networking environment. Following the students exposure to LAN, this module further develops the understanding of TCP/IP and provides the in depth knowledge of the protocol.

Module Aims
This module aims to:

Deliver the understanding of TCP/IP to the students. Transfer the necessary skills required in design, implementation and testing of typical TCP/IP configurations (NOS/router). Build the necessary expertise required for implementation and

troubleshooting of TCP/IP in large-scale internetworking environment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate the expertise in IP addressing/sub-netting with reference to a given network 2. Configure the TCP/IP suite of protocols in an internetworking environment. 3. Analyze the role of each protocol at each layer of the TCP/IP suite. 4. Evaluate a TCP/IP network and solve the TCP/IP related issues in the network

5. Evaluate the impact of different TCP/IP protocols on networks 6. Apply these skills to various existing technologies NOS/router. Teaching and Learning Strategies
Weekly lectures will be conducted supported by classroom-based tutorials as well as practice sessions. Students will be given weekly tasks to exercise the material covered during lectures. Students will make use of Cisco routers and simulations to make configurations, building up network lab environments. Installation and

configuration of windows 2003, 2008 server will be the major tool used during the lab sessions.

Assessment Details
Practical Test/Exam: The Assessment has 3 tasks as follows:

Task 1- Practical Test (Designing IP addressing scheme using subnetting and VLSM techniques for the given scenario using the simulator: packet tracer, Multiple choice questions Scheduled on week 7 weightage: 40%) Task 2- Case study Assignment (Need to submit a report based on the given case scenario ) Scheduled on week 10 weightage: 20%) Task 3- Practical Test (Implementing Group policy for the domain as per the given scenario (group work, multiple choice questions. Scheduled on week 14: Weightage: 40%)

Submission Process:
Task 1: Task 2: Task 3: Skills Intellectual Skills Demonstrate the expertise in IP addressing/sub-netting with reference to a given network Analyze the role of each protocol at each layer of the TCP/IP suite. Evaluate the impact of different TCP/IP protocols on networks Practical Test Case Study Assignment - to be submitted through MOVE. Practical Test
