Solutions: Copper (II) sulfate Silver nitrate Lead (II) nitrate Zinc sulfate Magnesium nitrate
Procedures 1. Using a well plate and the chemical given, determine which reactions will occur between the metals and the solutions. 2. Add to each of the wells a small piece of the appropriate metal which has first been cleaned with sand paper. Note: Your teacher will provide the calcium when you are ready for it. 3. Create a data table to record your observations of before and after reactions. 4. Observe and record any evidence of a replacement reaction (i.e. a thin coating appears on the surface of the metal) occurring each of the test tubes. If no change is visible within five minutes, record this as no reaction Copper (II) Silver Nitrate Lead (II) Zinc Sulfate Magnesium Sulfate Nitrate nitrate Copper No reaction White None None None precipitate Lead None Bubbling None None None Zinc Turned black None Turned black None None Magnesium Bubbling, None None None None green precipitation Silver No reaction Bubbling None None None Calcium None None
Part II: Reactions with Acids Materials: Metals: Copper Magnesium Zinc Silver Lead Calcium
Procedures: 1. Determine where H+ should be placed on an activity series by comparing the relative amount of bubbling when added to metals. 2. Create a data table and record your results. Metal: Copper Magnesium Observation: No reaction Gas produced
No reaction: Copper and Lead (II) nitrate Cu(s) + Pb(NO3)2(aq) No reaction. There is no reaction here because copper is less reactive than lead so there is no reaction Reaction: Zinc and Copper (II) sulfate Zn(s)+CuSO4(aq) ZnSO4(aq)+ Cu(s) There is a reaction here because zinc is more reactive than copper Net ionic equation: Zn(s)+Cu(aq Zn(aq)+ Cu(s) Metal with acid: Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid 4Mg(s)+2HCl(aq)2Mg2Cl(aq)+H2(g) There was hydrogen gas that was produced, there is a reaction here because Magnesium is more reactive than hydrogen. Net ionic equation: 4Mg(s)+H2(aq)2Mg2(aq)+H2(g)
