Lords of Chaos put Ft. Myers in national

spotlight
WBBH-TV

FORT MYERS: Fort Myers was thrust into the national

spotlight in April 1996 when the Lords of Chaos killed
Riverdale High School band teacher Mark Schwebes. Now,
ten years later, the shattered lives once again begin to take
shape, all from what began with a group of brainy Riverdale
misfits and their petty crimes.

Kevin Foster, Peter Magnotti, Chris Black and Derek Shields

called themselves the Lords of Chaos.

They began with petty crimes at first - breaking into a gas

station, robbing a diner, killing 2 birds at a popular
Buckingham restaurant.

It escalated into arson at the landmark old Coca-Cola building

on US 41 near downtown Fort Myers.

Gang member Chris Black

described his reaction as he
watched it burn to the
ground.

"It was majestic," said

Black.

Former News-Press
reporter Jim Greenhill has written an exhaustive study of the
Lords of Chaos and their crimes.

Outside the auditorium of Riverdale High School, the sordid

tale of the Lords of Chaos turned to one of murder. Kevin
Foster had always said that he wanted to kill someone. And
what happened on the night of April 30th, 1996 gave him his
chance.

Around 9:30 p.m., the Lords of Chaos were at the auditorium.

They were planning to throw cans of peaches through the
windows, and maybe set fire to the auditorium.

Riverdale band teacher, the

popular Mark Schwebes,
came upon the boys near
the pay phone. He
recognized a few of them
and saw they were wearing
latex gloves and carrying
large tin cans.

Greenhill describes what Schwebes said to the boys.

"Don't be surprised if the sheriff's deputy who's assigned to

the school comes to talk to you guys tomorrow," said
Greenhill.

During a Dateline interview, Chris Black talked about what

happened next.

"The man should be killed. No one disputed it. Everybody

went for it. Group decision," said Black.

Two hours later, the four went to Pine Manor, south of Ft.
Myers, where Schwebes lived.

Peter Magnotti and Black parked a few feet away. Derek

Shields knocked on his door and turned away.

Schwebes died on his doorstep at age 32.

Before the Lords of Chaos could strike again, their bragging

led to a police tip, their arrests and their convictions.

The mastermind, Kevin Foster, was sentenced to death.

"I wish I could go back and replace my life for his. But I
can't," said Shields.

In part two, you'll see Craig Wolf's interview with Mark

Schwebe's sister in Georgia and his interview with Derek
Shields at the Polk Correctional Institution.
