This Unit will familiarize with the organization structure of the profitability analysis. It also covers the concept and use of characteristic and value field assigned to operating concern. It also defines the attributes and data structure attached to operating concern.

3. Business Scenario
ACL is a MNC Company has its operations in India, United Kingdom and United States. It is required for ACL to take profitability and sales reporting in corporate currency as well as local currency. Due to this reason ACL Company is configuring Operating Concern for its profitability reporting in corporate currency (USD) with required characteristic and value fields for its reporting and also including few non standard characteristics under operating concern to meet company reporting.

4. Overview of Operating Concern and its attribute 4.1 Relevance to business process
ACL is a MNC Company has its operations in India, United Kingdom and United States. It is required for ACL to take profitability and sales reporting in corporate currency as well as local currency. Due to this reason ACL Company is configuring Operating Concern for its profitability reporting in corporate currency (USD) with required characteristic and value fields for its reporting and also including few non standard characteristics under operating concern to meet company reporting.

4.2 Configuration / usage consideration

Operating Concern Development
As stated earlier, the operating concern is the central tenet of CO-PA. It is decided how the data is capture and stored in CO-PA as well as what characteristics are captured for each piece of data. Before development of operating concern, it is important to map what type of data is

required by company to capture in addition to the characteristics that are important to company for CO-PA reporting purpose. Note It is easy to add characteristic to operating concern, but it is very, very difficult to remove them from operating concern once they have been posted. In CO-PA there are fixed number of characteristics that can be used in operating concern. It is good idea to not use all characteristics in initial implementation CO-PA. It is always good idea to leave some room for company to grow and to capture new characteristics requirements as business grows and changes.

Operating Concern Attribute

The First step in defining your operating concern structure is to define the attributes of the operating concern. The operating concern attribute control the time frame in which CO-PA is updated. Click on Attributes tab and enter fields as below

Click on Save Here are explanations of the fields Currency Enter the identifier of the currency company wanted to use as the CO-PA currency. When company use costing based CO-PA, values are posted in the CO-PA currency only; any incoming foreign currencies are automatically translated into CO-PA currency before CO-PA is updated. CO-PA stores values only in one currency. Fiscal Year Variant Enter the identifier of the fiscal year variant company want to use for COPA. Company CO-PA fiscal year variant should match with company controlling area fiscal year variant. Once the fiscal year variant is set, it cannot be changed unless it is changed to a fiscal year variant that has more posting period than the original fiscal year variant that was assigned.

5. Creation of data structure
Data structure consists of Characteristics and value fields Characteristics
Characteristics are the criteria in Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) according to which you can analyze your operating result and perform differentiated sales and profit planning and reporting. A combination of values for the characteristics in an operating concern is called a Profitability Segment, i.e. values for characteristic Division are as follow: Basic Chemicals, Polyolefin, PVC/Polyester, Intermediates, Fertilizers, Metals, Intercompany Div. Some of the standard (fixed) characteristics, also in A Grp are: Billing type, Business area, Company code, Controlling area, Cost object, Customer, Distribution channel, Division, Order, Partner profit center, Plant, Product, Profit center, Record type, Sales order, Sales order item, Sales organization, Version, WBS element. These are known as fixed characteristics. In addition to the fixed characteristics, up to 50 non-fixed non fixed characteristics can be added to an operating concern.

Assign Characteristics and value fields to Operating Concern

To assign Characteristics and value fields to Operating Concern; go to Operating concern change screen and click data structure tab and click on create data structure button and select all Characteristic from the right hand side of screen which company wish to use for the reporting purpose. Now move the selected lines to left hand side of the screen by using arrows .

Value Fields
Value fields are only required in costing-based Profitability Analysis. These are the fields that contain the currency amounts and quantities that are required to analyze in CO-PA. They represent the structure of costs and revenues.

There are two types of value fields:

Value fields that contain amounts in currencies are also referred to as "amount fields". All amount fields in a single line item use the same currency. Value fields that contain quantities are referred to as "quantity fields". Each quantity field is assigned a field containing a unit of measure. Consequently, each quantity field in a line item can use a different unit.

Click on the tab value field to assign value fields to operating concern and select all value fields from the right hand side of screen which company wish to use for the reporting purpose.

Now move the selected lines to left hand side of the screen by using arrows

Now click on the activate button to activate operating concern which is created now for posting and analysis. Without activating operating concern it is not possible to do any transaction with respective to that operating concern. Before activating it shows red color indicator and once activation is completed status turns into green color.

Important tables in CO-PA

The system creates following tables automatically in costing based CO-PA when operating concern is created and saved.
