IOP Book: One Hundred Years of Solitude Topic: The role of solitude

I will be discussing on the role of solitude and justify with examples given from characters. This is what I have planned to discuss:
The main theme of the book is solitude as evident from the title. It plays a major role in the Buendia family none of the members can escape from it. In the book, solitude is not defined as loneliness but rather a common characteristic driven by obsessions between the Buendia family in particular. Isolated from the rest of the world, the Buendas grow to be solitary and selfish. With every member of the family living only for him or herself. The founder of macondo, Jose Arcadio Buendia was obsessed with the gypsies and their magical inventions, he spends hours in his laboratory. When he thought he made a revolutionary discover he went insane. If you have to go crazy, go all by yourself Ursula told him. He was tied to a tree, speaking a language that nobody could understand and lost in thoughts for the rest of his life. Colonel Aurelinos absolute power corrupted him to an extent he had a chalk circle drawn around him at all times, allowing no one near him. His solitude worsens when he loses the capability to have emotions or memories. He lived very lonely and isolated in his room. Amaranta is another extreme example. After discovering her foster sister won Pietro Crespis heart she becomes bitter and does everything she can to separate them. Even after Pietro falls in love with her, she rejects him and he kills himself. She burns her hand with remorse and wear a black bandage as a symbol of her solitude. Years later she finds real love in Colonel Gerineldo but also rejects him. Amarantas foster sister, Rebeca, falls in love with and marries her adoptive brother Jos Arcadio after his return from traveling the world. After his mysterious and premature death, she lives in seclusion for the rest of her life. Aureliano Babilonia, is literally left alone after his mothers death. He is imprisoned in the house for most of his life by Fernanda until there is no one left to guard him. He has nothing to do but decipher the parchments of Melquiades. The Buendias in particular seem to experience solitude more than the rest of Macondo. Those connected to them are bound to fall into solitude too. Fernanda was an outsider who came to Macondo to compete against Remedios. She marries Aureliano Segundo who divides his time to her and his concubine. She was never accepted in the family and though she manages the household she is isolated from the family but none of them tries to go against her. After Ursulas death, she is left alone in the house with her grandson Aureliano Babilonia. She becomes paranoid, exchanging letter with her invisible doctors. Solitude is observed throughout the entire book, one does not necessarily experience it alone but with an accomplice like Aureliano Babilonia and Amaranta Ursula. Aureliano had been alone until Amaranta had come back from Europe. Not knowing she was his aunt, they started an affair, they would make love many times and only leave the house very few times. Each character has his/hers own form of solitude. Colonel Aureliano seeked solitude as a form of consolation, Jose Arcadio Buendia was lost in solitude. The extreme was Amarantas: Solitude unto death.
