The Electron Microscope by: Kian Khorramshahi in 7C

The Electron Microscope Introduction:

Hello my name is Kian Shad Khorramshahi and this is my report on the Electron Microscope. The German scientist Ernst Rusk from Germany invented the Electron microscope in 1932. After fifty years he gets the Nobel Prize for science because of his invention. The first practical Electron Microscope was actually invented in 1937 by Eli Franklin who was a Canadian inventor. It was created to examine microbes in much better detail than the ordinary microscope known as the light microscope. The reason for this invention was because light microscopes had a limit in zooming in on objects. Wavelengths of light are about 600nm. Since Ernst Rusk figured that Electrons have a much smaller wavelength he could use electrons instead, which he did, leading to the invention of the first electron microscope. However, it was still not much use due to the fact that the early Electron Microscopes had a very high current density, which did not allow it to zoom in on objects clearly. It was later modified by the Canadian inventor Eli Franklin and was used for practical use. Now it is the worlds strongest Microscope.

Reasons and circumstances for invention:

The German inventor Ernst Rusk first invented the Electron Microscope. It had many improvements and changes over the years. Its size, width, length, and especially power have greatly changed over the years, going from only 2000 times (when first invented) to 2,000,000 times (modern Electron Microscopes). The greatest jump of improvements and changes being when Eli Franklin made the first practical Electron microscope fixing the problem of overheating the specimen. When the first practical Electron microscope was made it could zoom in about 3.5 times better than the last leading Light Microscope. The Electron microscope greatly revolutionized the human lifestyle. Though the Light Microscope has helped, the Electron Microscope helps us examine extremely small materials or biological materials. These include things like: microorganisms and cells for example: metals, a variety of large molecules, medical biopsy samples, characteristics of various surfaces and many more! Its greatest change to the human lifestyle is probably medical care. We learn a lot about how the human body works thanks to the Electron Microscope, but we also learn about viruses. It also shows us how objects look up close, which changes how we think of things in general. Its a revolutionizing tool.

Conclusion (summary):
In conclusion the Electron microscope is an extremely revolutionary tool. It allows people to magnify things much better than the light microscope. Ernst Rusks invention has helped cure many diseases. His invention also helped solve vary of science problems. Ernst Rusk and Eli Franklin helped us change the way we see the world today. Books:1.
