Joke 1: A young college co-ed came running in tears to her father. "Dad, you gave me some terrible financial advice!" "I did? What did I tell you?" said the dad. "You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that big bank is in trouble." "What are you talking about? That's one of the largest banks in the state," he said. "there must be some mistake." "I don't think so," she sniffed. "They just returned one of my checks with a note saying, 'Insufficient Funds'." (In fat she had issued the cheque of more than the deposit she had in the account.)

Joke 2: A preacher went into his church and he was praying to God. While he was praying, he asked God, "How long is 10 million years to you?" God replied, "1 second." The next day the preacher asked God, "God, how much is 10 million dollars to you?" And God replied, "A penny." Then finally the next day the preacher asked God, "God, can I have one of your pennies?" And God replied, "Just wait a second."

2.4 SLIDE SHOW: SOME FACTS In order to support the earlier fact about poor money management skill in youths, few points have been provided in this slide. The first point talks about, youth is in the transition phase for entering into the stage of financial independence. But in this stage they are vulnerable to spending and think really little for savings. Few tips on savings are listed on the slide. I am quite sure that everybody knows about this saving formulas but trust me once you start this will be a fun and you will not even know that you ar actually saving. Each one whall be discussed separately in the coming slides

Knowing need versus want Budget Diet/shopping diet Making habit of eating in rather than eating out Deposit in banks

2.7 SLIDE SHOW: NEEDS OR WANTS Instruction: Presenters should be very clear regarding the difference between the meaning of needs and wants. Needs: Needs are best thought of as physiological or biological requirements for maintaining life, such as the need for air, water, food, shelter, and sleep. Wants: Wants are then the psychological desires that are not essential for life but that make life just a little more enjoyable, example red sports car, luxurious goods etc. (Rice is essential whereas chocolate is want. Normally ball pen is need whereas expensive fountain pen/ball pen is want.)

In order to start with the presentation on this topic, few examples that distinguish needs and wants can be provided in following way or in any other manner as per presenters choice.
I have Rs 1000, I need to purchase two academic books and at the same I really need one good sneaker (shoe/footlocker). Here in this case, both are important. If I do not purchase it, then I will not be able to do homework and score good mark in examination. However, I have alternative shoe for sneaker. So can anybody tell me what my need is and what is my want???

With this example, presenter can simplify the meaning of needs and want in following way to the students.

Tips for Interaction on this Section

Now lets explore what to do with your money. First, you need to distinguish between Needs vs. Wants. Needs are things you CANNOT do without. Wants are things that you CAN do without. Knowing your Needs vs. Wants can help you make better financial decisions. So ask yourself: Do I need it? Do I want it? Next, you need to know how to set goals for your future. Goals are things you want to accomplish in the future, and determine the direction you take in managing your money. Set your short term and long term goals; Short term - immediate goals such as a car, a new iPod, trips Long term - future goals such as a college education, family, etc. After making understand about the difference between needs and wants, presenter can ask the students to differentiate between following items: 1. Academic Course Book and snickers 2. Health care and bicycle 3. Clothes and designer clothes 4. I pod or mobile phone 5. Gift for mother or movie tickets

To accomplish these goals, you need to manage your money, beginning with setting up budget. And inform the students that savings is need rather than wants. Set your priorities for saving and spending and stick to them spending should be made on need basis rather than on want basis.

2.8 SLIDE SHOW: SHORT TERM GOALS Instruction: Presenter should make clear that short term goals must be very specific in terms of time, money and attainment. It refers to a short term goal that students want to achieve from saving money. Give similar type of example as below:

Page | 15

Banking on Youth

Kist Bank Ltd

My favorite recreation is to travel and explore various places of my country. But unfortunately I have traveled really less due to inadequate source. But now, I am saving few portions out of my income to achieve this goal. I have listed all the destinations for traveling and my short term plan for the near future is to trek on Ghadruk for which I have saved enough money and now I am waiting for the holidays.

Presenters can provide similar examples which will help the students to set their short term goal which can be attainable if they save some portion out of their pocket money. Following tips can be provided to the students by the presenter and can some add similar other tips: Paste a picture of your needed stuff such as iPod, branded All Star Converse etc on your wall which will motivate you to save Make a target and write strong commitment letter for achieving the target Some of you might like to be Doctor or Engineer or Broker or Professor and so on. In order to study, it may require a large sum of money. Your parents if they have limited income may struggle to pay fee. If you save, you may also contribute to realize your dream. Students can make a chart as below which is also shown in the respective slide. Goal/Why needed??? How much to save?
within

How to achieve?
6 1. Drop at least Rs 20 per day in my Piggy Bank or at least Rs 500 per month in my bank account and if I drop at least for 150 days I can make Rs 3000. 2. Do not spend the cash I will receive from my granny each time I go to my Mamaghar 3. The money that I will receive from my parents as a birthday gift shall also be dropped in my Piggy Bank. 4. Within 6 months I can make Rs 5000 to and my short term goal can be attained.

Purchasing a pair of Rs 5000 original All Star Converse months

2.9 SLIDE SHOW: BUDGETING Instruction: Presenters can provide slight information on budgeting to the students. Point out following information

Page | 16

Banking on Youth

Kist Bank Ltd

The first step in managing your money is knowing where its coming in and where its going out and making sure the in exceeds the out so you have enough for your needs, and can save and invest for your future.

By mentioning the above points, presenters can then read the point given in the slide and give a slight hint to prepare a simple budget. Also tell the students that saving should not be what is left after spending it should be separated before spending. 2.10 SLIDE SHOW: MY PERSONAL BUDGET, EXAMPLE

My Personal Budget

SESSION 3 3.1 SLIDE SHOW: BUDGET DIET/SHOPPING DIET Instruction: This slide contains some pictures and the pictures itself tell the story. The purpose is to motivate the students to save and by showing the advantages of off season sales. In the first click, the picture written as Sales will disappear. By second click a cartoon picture of girl will fly in and with another click the picture gets flipped and disappears. In the third click a sentence showing I got extra 500 rupee spare will appear which moves a little.

Well this may sound funny but curbing unnecessary expenditure is what I would like to name as a Budget Diet. Remember guys dieting means having all the necessary vitamins in a balanced way and avoiding unnecessary items that would accumulate in our body creating some adverse effect. Some of the tips I would like to give undergoing Budget diet which I have followed as well: For budget diet, going on a shopping diet can be a very useful idea and I would like to quote this especially for the ladies participants. Well no offence girls!!!! It does not means gents are excluded, they can do the shopping diet as much as possible

3.2 SLIDE SHOW: WISE SPENDING BY BILLIONAIRES Instruction: The slide contains few examples of the billionaires who live a very frugal life despite of being billionaires. Their examples can be taken as inspiration and lessons. IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, one of the richest men in the world, drives a 15-yearold Volvo, flies economy, avoids expensive suits and eats simply at lower-tier restaurants.

Page | 18

Banking on Youth

Kist Bank Ltd

Indian billionaire Azim Premji, owner of technology giant Wipro, serves food on paper plates in a lunch reception honoring his sons wedding! 3.3 SLIDE SHOW: WARREN BUFFET Instruction: Warren Buffetts living style can be a very inspirational story to the youths for economic use of money. Under this session, presenters should try to develop some positive views towards wise spenders and make them aware that saving does not mean being Kanjus tight spenders or something like that rather they are called wise spenders. Wise spending refers to money management which youths are required to be taught of and can be regarded as a major course for life time like in academic years. In the first click, Warren Buffett picture appears and in the second clip his name and in third, a statement stating he is the third richest man in the world.
Note: The position of richest men change from time to time, which needs to be updated accordingly. For example largest tax payer under individual category in Nepalese context in FY 068/69 was Prithvi Bahadur Pandey, CEO of Nepal Investment Bank. This may also be shown by the presenters which may be relevant in Nepalese perspective.

All of you must be thinking that super rich persons like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet never thinks about how they spend their money and they do not require to make choices as they have unlimited source. After all, they make money by the millions and billions each year. Even I used to think that, and sometimes I used to wish for adoption by any of these guys!!! Well just some ridiculous thoughts . (For refreshment can add similar hilarious stories) But guys trust me these super rich persons actually spend their money very economically; they are savvy and very prudent with their money. The frugal living styles of these billionaires can be taken as lesson which we can incorporate in our life. And when I came to know about these facts I became a huge fan of Warren Buffett. I would like to share few of his philosophies regarding money spending

Page | 19

3.3.1 SLIDE SHOW: HIS LIVING STYLE Instruction: This slide highlights the living style of Warren Buffett. Under this heading there are two slides describing about the living style of Warren Buffett and his message The first sentence highlights the Warren Buffetts life story followed by the message he wants to convey to the people regarding money saving and its utilization. The sentence pops out on each click or enters in the keyboard. Hence presenter has to be conscious in this slide.
Well most of you are aware about Warren Buffetthe is one of the richest man in the world with the net worth of around 44 billion dollar. The net worth of Warren Buffett (2012) is $ 44 billion. If you convert that $ 44 billion in Nepalese rupees (multiplied by 1$=NPR88) then the figure shall be 3872000000000 which in words is 38 kharab, 72 arab. The budget of Nepals economy is worth of NPR 400 billion. Imagine guys the net worth of the Warren Buffett is around 10 times the Nepalese budget. But at the same time very few of you may know his living style is not that very exotic in compared to the wealth he has. I would like to provide few examples regarding Warren Buffets view to live a frugal life despite of having such enormous amount of wealth.

1. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers. 2. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence. 3. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him. 4. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

One could have bought many things

with little savings. Encourage your children to start some kind of business

Don't buy more than what you "really need" and encourage your children to do and think the same

You are what you are Always think how you can
accomplish things economically.

3.3.2 SLIDE SHOW: HIS ADVICES Instruction: This slide does not content any animation. Hence Presenter can read the advices one by one or make the students read by themselves.

Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.

Live your life as simple as you are. Don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which you feel comfortable. Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them which are really in need rather.

After all it's your life then why give chance to other to rule our life."

Impressive Is not it??? You may not end up a millionaire by taking these steps but you can live comfortably within your means, and still be frugal. Well how did I get this information from??? Of course, Internet!!!!

As everybody is aware internet is not limited to only information, in fact its getting popularity rapidly in recent days for entertainment and social networking, shopping, virtual courses, virtual library and many services including banking. Internet has made possible to access banking services in a click. You can view your account status virtually, get the fund transfer to other account, pay the utility bills remaining online etc. So online banking is indeed more fun and at the same time it saves times as queuing up in the line can be totally avoided. More importantly the use of paper can be minimized to a great extent, for example use of cheque books, statements, receipts etc and indirectly we will be conserving the trees i.e. if the use of paper is minimized then cutting of the trees can be also minimized

4.3 SLIDE SHOW: M-WALLET Before discussing regarding m-Wallet services presenters can interact with the students. For instance instead of asking how many of you use mobile phones, ask the students how many of you do not use mobile phones??? On that note presenter can provide facts that 37% (2012 data) of the Nepalese populace are using mobile phones and also increasing at a very high rate. Through mobile phones one can play music, videos, take the photos etc. But at the same time through mobile phone one can also get access to the banking services. 4.4 SLIDE SHOW: VIRTUAL BANKING CAN SAVE ENVIRONMENT!! At last but not the least, Presenter can throw a message that utilization of virtual banking to lot extent can reduce the consumption of papers. Papers are made from the woods and hence we should minimize the use of papers as much as possible so that cutting down of trees would be reduced.
