TREATMENT OUTLINE Ben Howard Only Love Music Video Treatment Director: Joshua Rose Copyright granted from artists manager- Owain Davies OVERVIEW My music video aims to explore many emotions of love and highlight stages of the grieving process after the bond between a man and woman is broken through death (?) I have previously worked on up-beat music videos however I wanted to take a different, more sombre direction with this music video as I believe this music genre would suit a serious concept that some people may be able to relate to. I wanted to explore a serious narrative and I believe my ideas will achieve this requirement. The end of my music video will be left as an open ended narrative which ensures the audience are involved in drawing their own conclusions about the subject of death (?) STYLE At the equilibrium stage of my music video the mood behind the visuals is very soft and uplifting, we see a number of exterior and interior locations both representing the love behind the couple on screen. The editing style behind shots will be very smooth to ensure there is no disruption of the equilibrium. However in the stage of disruption the editing style will transform to a rapid pace with choppy cuts between each shots. This style supports the interruption of the couples emotions and the visuals on screen back this idea further. Costume would be important within this stage to represent the different types of class and to follow we enter the stage of recognition. This stage is very fast however the emotions behind characters will be crucial to highlighting the pain endured by the disruption. The video then moves onto the repairing damage stage and the editing style will vary between smooth and choppy as the characters run through a mixture of emotions. The ending of the video then moves onto the new equilibrium however the open ended narrative means that the audience can draw their own conclusions.

CONCEPT My concept will be displayed in a linear story format so the ideas behind my visuals are easy to follow. First of all within the equilibrium stage of my video (the 2 opening verses and chorus) we are open to visuals of the happy couple embarking on loving activities so we get a basic idea of the main focus within the music video. These shots follow the lyrics within the song as they can be determined in a happy manor or the opposite end of the scale, a saddening manor. These shots are coincided with a mixture of clips of the artist performing and these visuals then progress to the next stage of the couples relationship as we see them becoming engaged surrounded by a romantic and loving environment. This sets up the solid equilibrium for the start of my video which is then followed by the disturbance within the next verse. The disturbance completely changes the mood behind the music video as we experience the transition between love and disaster. We follow the females day to day actions as she walks from the shops with a bag of groceries, the disruption is then introduced as the girl is pursued by a number of suspicious gang members. She then finds herself surrounded by the group which ends up with the female being stabbed and killed. We then move into the recognition stage as the news is broken to the females other half, the exploration of different emotions is represented further as the male character begins the first stage of the grieving process. The recognition quickly passes to the repairing the disturbance stage of the narrative and this involves a number of shots including the male laying flowers at the girls grave and also we see him running towards a mutual location where he then brings an end to his anger and starts the forgetting process. The end shot is a mysterious shot of the girl at the same location as the male which creates a number of potential new equilibriums for the audience to create. The shot ends with the message of whether this last shot was a figure of the males imagination or whether the female was still alive. SUMMARY I believe the overall concept will sum up a number of emotions that some of the audience may be able to relate themselves to. However the interesting narrative allows the viewers to escape and entertain themselves through the form of a music video. I think the artists image coincides with the mood created behind my concepts and the natural emotions created also fit with the natural genre of country music.
