HILE golf is thought to have been played in Milford Haven prior to 1908, with members playing at Pill, no records from the time exist. The earliest evidence to be found is a record of a meeting held in 1908 in The Masonic Hall to discuss the formation of a course at Marble Hall Road, but this was short lived. The earliest written record of the Milford Haven club is from 1913 when a nine-hole course was established at Goosepill.A visiting golf professional from Llandrindod Wells was quoted in the Havefordwest and Milford Haven Telegraph of the time as describing the turf at Goosepill as excellent and the position of the heights above Victoria Lakes as magnificent, with wonderful views of the Haven and the country. Fees at the time were one guinea for gents, ten shillings and six pence for ladies and children under sixteen paid five shillings. The course moved to its present site, then with nine holes, in July 1933.The first tee was near the present 17th green with a modest club house nearby. The course was opened by Percy Alliss, father of the well-known golf commentator Peter Alliss. The course expanded to 18 holes in 1978 when 81-acres of land at Gellyswick was purchased, incorporating the original nine holes. Members and guests are now able to play nine holes without having to go over to the Gellyswick side to play. The club has been holding a series of celebrations to mark its centenary year, starting with a New Years Eve party to remember at the beginning of the year.
Highlights included the driving in of the new club captain, John Price and the Lady Captain, Karren Pullen. Prior to this all past captains, ladies and gents, drove off.The driving in was followed by a fireworks display arranged by Alan, the clubs steward. In August, the club hosted the Welsh Team Championship with teams from all over Wales taking part, and there were more celebrations as Milford Haven reached the final. Golf Union of Wales championship manager Rhys Lloyd James praised the all-round efforts of the club. The club delivered and exceeded all expectations, he said at the time. They are having a centenary year to remember and as a club were one of the most enthusiastic host venues we have had this year a real positive for Welsh golf. The committee and members of Milford Haven Golf Club would like to thank their sponsors for their support during the clubs centenary year.
These include: The Swansea Building Society which was founded as a mutual Building Society in 1923. Milford Haven Golf Club has had a long and varied history with a lot of the details being lost in the mists of time. None of the original founder members are now alive. A great deal of the past detail of this history has been researched by Mrs Joan Gale who has spent many a long hour gleaning what details she could find from old newspapers and dusty archives. The club is indebted to Mrs Gale for the foresight in going it alone in her research over many years on this project. Her diligence enabled everything to be brought together and, by finding all of the minute books back as far as 1933, finding old photographs and talking to the senior members of the club, enabled the club to put together a written record of its history for the benefit of future generations of golfers at Milford Haven Golf Club.
