Jamestown Community College
Campus.
The festival was started four years
ago, and is similar to the highland
games, minus the competition
aspect.
“We didn’t want a competition,
we just wanted time for the bands to
play,” said Doug Clark, a member
of the 96th Highlander Pipes and
Drums which hosts the festival.
Six pipe and drum bands, and seven
clans are attending the festival this
year. Each of the bands will perform
individually throughout the day
and in the afternoon and evening.
Throughout the festival, they will
also play as massed bands.
Next Saturday, pipe bands from the tri-state area will play well-known tunes separately and as a single massed

Garden Gone Wild

It’s Lily Time in Lindaland: Stalking, Deadheading, Pruning and Raking is Garden Consultant Linda Yates’ Passion

Hey! It’s Showtime in Lily
land! The summer show has
finally arrived despite the
unseasonal and exceptionally
rainy weather. The gardens are
aglow with colour even though
it’s overcast. Quick, run out, a
bit of sun! We don’t want to
miss a thing right now. It’s
an incredible palette of every
conceivable colour and texture
so amazing that I cannot take
my eyes off of the scenery.
It’s Lily time in Lindaland I
call it. It is my happy place
no matter what the work load.
Staking, deadheading, pruning
or raking, it is my joy and
passion here.
The chores give time to enjoy
the flowers, to hang out with
the fragrances, to take time
out from the human race and
mingle with Mother Nature
for a while. The rewards are
greater than I ever expected.
It is a gardener’s dreamland
of discovery and delight. It IS
a big show with a new trick
around every corner. Forgotten
flower friends return each
year to greet me, new friends
surprise me; all rise to the
occasion of Show time! ‘The
Queen has arrived’, the Queen
of the gardens that is.
The show offs and the
unmistakable beauties are here.
I tag this title to the Oriental
fragrant tall lilies, especially
the pure white Casa Blanca.
They have their schedule and
show up for their yearly debut.
“We’re here” they proclaim
all fresh and smelling sweet.
So I run out and take photos
of them promptly before they
have their freshness washed
by the unending rain. There
are so many different varieties
and colors and being a Lilium
collector there are a few here.
Let’s take a tour and see what
we encounter. First, a huge
white Oriental with outward
facing petals with tiny maroon
speckles. Next we see a yellow
star, a Citronella Strain,
speckled with black spots, 5
feet in height. Moving along
there is a famous tiger lily
from the far east long known
as L.tigrinum, a Turk’s-cap
flower who is orange with dark
purple spotting and 7 feet tall.
The lilies are accompanied
by many other blooming
perennials, especially lots of
day lilies, phlox and monarda.
There is a lovely tall stand
of Black Beauties who bear
distinctive blooms of deep
maroon-red with a narrow
white edge, green star center
and long protruding anthers,
it’s petals tightly reflexed. It
is nearly shrub-like and long-
lived and multiplies readily
by offsets. It’s a winner! Here
are a half dozen-brandy new
pink 5-foot tall oriental’s
that just opened today and
are looking so fresh. They
have a backdrop of clear pink
hollyhocks and purplish-pink
monarda, so sweet! Through
the arbor we have some
Stargazers mingling with tall
pink anemones robustissimus
and every shade of phlox and
purple-pink coneflowers.
Moving away from the house
and the sun gardens we call
them, we have in the Dawn
Redwood bed the oversized
O.T. (Oriental-Trumpet
hybrids) topping out at nine
feet tall with a dozen blooms
of the palest yellow waxy
flower and so highly fragrant
as to perfume the entire yard.
It’s undoubtedly the perfect
compliment. At the Moon
Garden the stately all white
Casa Blancas and Lilium
auratum reside alongside lots
of shasta daisies, white phlox,
false dragonhead, lobelia and
cleomes. Earlier there are tall
white Trumpet lilies and later
there will be the ultimate and
last to bloom Speciosum lilies.
Speciosum translated means
“good looking,” “showy,”
“splendid” and “brilliant,”
all aptly describing what
many consider to be the most
beautiful of all Oriental lily
species. They actually are the
last to bloom in late August
and early September. Such
a treat. I call them white
butterflies.
Elsewhere in the gardens is
every colour in the spectrum.
All blending beautifully,
all happy together. Behind
the formal garden the royal
purple Gypsy Queen clematis
and the Lavender-blue
General Sikorski clematis are
reblooming. Well gardening
friends, another huge rainstorm
has blown in and toppled lots
of nice specimen plants which
is very disheartening because
we have waited an entire year
for these plants to bloom.
Some staking is in order and
it is still very wet and today
unusually murky and muggy.
A not fun situation for garden
chores.
We seem to be between a
rock and a hard place with
our green thumb endeavors
lately. It’s too wet, rainy,
sultry whatever. Oh well, like
housework it can wait till
later. Let’s have lemonade and
just look at the gardens for a
change; enjoy the colours and
shapes and textures.
Enjoy the moment because that
is all that is guaranteed. And
know that Showtime will also
fleet. Let’s take it all in every
chance we get; take pictures,
make notes and sketches and
journals. It’ll be a marvelous
read in the OFF-season. Linda

visitors are encouraged to
walk the trails as many times
as they would like. Visitors
start their walk by a small
pond that is illuminated with
numerous colored lights,
including some that change
colors. The trail then enters the
forest via a very smooth trail.

The Falcon’s Club is a new
development by a father and
son team which is just in the
finishing stages of the first
set of condos that have been
revamped.
The Falcon’s Club,
formerly the Falcon’s Nest,
sits down a long swooping
drive to unobstructed views
of Chautauqua Lake. The
refurbished and updated
condos are some of the largest
on the lake. On the expansive
grounds, the new tennis court
is already in place; soon the
rest of the grounds will be
landscaped to “golf course-
like” presence, according to
Donna Breen of Century 21
Turner Brokers. Additionally,
a basketball court for the use
of the condo owners has also
been recently completed.
The owners are in the golf
course business and use this
background and knowledge in
revamping the new landscape
design. This gorgeous piece
of property sits on six hundred
the trails, in which visitors
are encouraged to sit, relax
and enjoy seeing the forest
in a different light. Some
installations contain music.
The trail eventually brings
you to a cozy little café in
the woods, where sometimes
you will find a musician or
instrumentalist entertaining
the crowd. There are picnic
benches available and cookies
and coffee served inside the
café. This Saturday, August
15th, folk-rock duo, John and
Mary play at the café. More
entertainment is expected
to be announced in the next
week.
Night Lights at The Heron
was created by Doug Sitler
and Anna Shaffer (of Buffalo),
August 13-19, 2009 ~ The Villager, Chautauqua Lakeside ~

house 16 condos and a few
small cottages. There’s lots of
space to play, both inside and

the freedom to come and go
without having to worry about
mowing the lawn or trimming
the hedges. The condominiums
are being fully refurbished and
include hickory floors, granite
counter tops in the kitchen and
bathrooms, high ceilings and

Rockcastle owners of the
Great Blue Heron property.
The well-maintained festival
grounds lend itself perfectly
to the attraction with its ample
parking and smooth trails
through the woods. After two
weeks, organizers are happy
with the response they have
seen. Attendees have been
giving them praise for this
ambitious effort. They also
say that they have received
visitors from Buffalo,
Pittsburgh and other far-
off locales. Night Lights is
aiming to be a complimentary
tourist attraction during the

and dryer facilities, which
makes things very convenient
for the homeowner. All the

the first floor including a

One can picture curling
up with some popcorn and
having the surround sound
filling the room, watching a
good movie on a projection
screen. Upstairs contains an
open floor plan in the ‘great
room’ style, which is ideal
for entertaining with the
