SHOUT OUT GOLF TOURNAMENT 2013

The 2013 Spartan / Gator Ryder Cup took place at Belle Terre Golf Course in LaPlace. The tournament kicked off at 12:30. The day was full of some outstanding friendship, friendly rivalry and outstanding community support. This year we had 78 STA players and 53 EA players playing in the golf tournament from the East Ascension & St. Amant communities. As I looked around a saw all the STA players and their youth it looked like the PGA Tour. I then looked at the EA players and it looked like the Seniors tour. It looks like experience over came youth this 2013 Spartan / Gator Ryder Cup Tournament. East Ascension Spartans won by a score of 71.5 to 66.5. 4 Many thanks go out to the EA Captain Bret Hughes and the Gator Captain Camille Trabeau for all their outstanding and dedicated work. The average Thanksgiving Day meal is about 3,000 calories. I think something to keep in mind, especially if youre preparing that Thanksgiving meal, is to cook fresh. Fresh=flavor, so if you have more flavor by using fresh ingredients, then you wont have to use so much fat and sugar. Portion control is always the key, so instead of trying a little bit of everything thats cooked at your celebration, choose a few of your favorites. Also, try not to go back for seconds immediately. Wait at least 30 minutes, and if youre still hungry, then go back. Perhaps you can opt for a fresh fruit salad for dessert instead of that bread pudding or pecan pie. Stay active in stead of plopping on the couch. Have the family go for walk together after things settle down or go throw the football instead of watching football. It will help your digestive system get that green bean casserole moving! If you typically try to eat healthy most of the time, enjoy yourself for this one meal. Once youve eaten something, dont beat yourself up for it. Just do better the next meal and try work off the extra calories.

totally disabled if younger than 65. Proof of disability is not required for applicants age 65 or over. Apparently, being old is evidence in itself of disability. Veterans' service to qualify for Pension would include World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict Period, and the Gulf War conflict. The veteran need not serve in combat but only be in the service during that period of time. Only one day of service during the war period is required, with 90 days total active duty.

The National Care Planning Council estimates that up to 33% of all Americans over the age of 65 might be eligible for a Pension benefit under the right circumstances. The time it takes from the initial submission of the application to an award or denial of the Aid and Attendance benefit can take many months if there are no complications or additional paperwork requirements. Many applicants report an exasperating process of a year or more consisting of back-and-forth with the VA regional office in order to receive a final decision (an award of benefit or a denial). In many cases, the veteran-applicant has died and no benefit is forthcoming. The secret to shortening the time from submission to a final decision is to anticipate all the necessary documentation requirements and submit them with the original application. If the claimant is accurate in filling out the forms and in providing proper discharge papers, proof of relationship, and the proper VA power of attorney or guardianship proof, the initial claim may be approved more quickly. An important issue in submitting a well-documented claim is knowing, in advance, what evidence and documents are required for a rating decision and for annualization of unreimbursed medical costs. In providing those documents before they are requested by VA, the claim can be passed immediately to the rating activity for a final decision. This

could cut the time spent waiting for a decision by several months. Unfortunately, the VA does not tell applicants about the necessary paperwork described above. Unless the applicant knows about the requirements, the claims process can be drawn out over months, years or the application even denied. Therefore, when seeking veterans benefits, it is best to work with someone knowledgeable about veterans benefits, as they can help to shorten the application process. All parishes in Louisiana have someone on their staff with knowledge of the pension benefit. Additionally, most veterans service organizations, such as the Disabled American Vets, the VFW and the American Legion can assist with the Aid and Attendance benefit process. Finally, whether seeking VA benefits or other resources to assist with long-term care costs, an elder law attorney can provide a wealth of knowledge about paying for long-term care and making sure you have all of the documents in place to take care of your if you become disabled and pass along your assets to your heirs.

Importance of Correct Documentation in Obtaining Veterans Benefits

November is the month in which we honor our veterans with a day especially for them. In keeping with the spirit of Veterans Day, which is November 11, this article discusses a little known veterans benefit that is available to veterans or their surviving spouses receiving long-term care as a result of a non-service-connected disability or disease. This benefit is called Pension. Pension (also known as the Aid and Attendance benefit) is available to veterans who served on active duty at least 90 days during a period of war. To be eligible, the applicant must be

The purpose of this benefit is to provide supplemental income to disabled or older veterans with low income. If the veterans income exceeds the pension amount, then there is no award. However, qualifying income can be adjusted downward for unreimbursed medical expenses, allowing veterans with household income larger than the pension amount to qualify for monthly benefits. Pension can pay up to $2,054 a month for a married veteran to help offset the costs associated with home care, assisted living, nursing homes and other unreimbursed medical expenses. The amount of payment varies with the type of care, recipient income and marital status of the recipient. There are also income and asset tests to qualify.

Bad Breath

More than 80 million people suffer from chronic halitosis, or bad breath. In most cases it originates from the gums and tongue. The odor is caused by wastes from bacteria in the mouth, the decay of food particles, other debris in your mouth and poor oral hygiene. The decay and debris produce a sulfur compound that causes the unpleasant odor.

infection, diabetes, kidney failure or a liver malfunction. Xerostomia (dry mouth) and tobacco also contribute to this problem. Cancer patients who undergo radiation therapy may experience dry mouth. Even stress, dieting, snoring, age and hormonal changes can have an effect on your breath. An odor that comes from the back of your tongue may indicate postnasal drip. This is where mucus secretion, which comes from the nose and moves down your throat, gets stuck on the tongue and causes an odor.

Those who skip breakfast, beware, because the odor may reappear even if you've brushed your teeth.

Do certain foods cause bad breath?

Very spicy foods, such as onions and garlic, and coffee may be detected on a person's breath for up to 72 hours after digestion. Onions, for example, are absorbed by the stomach, and the odor is then excreted through the lungs. Studies even have shown that garlic rubbed on the soles of the feet can show up on the breath.

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene but can also be caused by retained food particles or gum disease.

Why is saliva so important in the fight against bad breath?

Saliva is the key ingredient in your mouth that helps keep the odor under control because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria, the primary cause of bad breath. When you sleep, however, salivary glands slow down the production of saliva, allowing the bacteria to grow inside the mouth. To alleviate "morning mouth," brush your teeth and eat a morning meal. Morning mouth also is associated with hunger or fasting.

What is my dentist's role?

Visit your dentist regularly, because checkups will help detect any physical problems. Checkups also help get rid of the plaque and bacteria that build up on your teeth. If you think that you suffer from bad breath, your dentist can help determine its source. He or she may ask you to schedule a separate appointment to find the source of the odor. Or, if your dentist believes that the problem is caused from a systemic (internal) source, such as an infection, he or she may refer you to your family physician or a specialist to help remedy the cause of the problem.

How do I control bad breath?

It is important to practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day. Proper brushing, including brushing the tongue, cheeks and the roof of the mouth, will remove bacteria and food particles. Flossing removes accumulated bacteria, plaque and food that may be trapped between teeth. To alleviate odors, clean your tongue with your toothbrush or a tongue scraper, a plastic tool

Buying a home is still very affordable but buyers are watching mortgage rates trend upward. This may make it harder to obtain a loan for your dream house. In addition, tight credit restrictions can keep some buyers from becoming homeowners. If you are considering purchasing a home it is important that you educate yourself about the mortgage application process. Don't be surprised if your bank or mortgage company ask you to submit the same information multiple times during the process and verify all of the information again just before the close.. They must be sure that the information is accurate and current and that your financial situation or employment has not changed since you initially applied for the loan. If you are fully prepared you may be able to avoid problems and qualify for a loan without excessive stress. Applying for a loan can be a confusing and stressful process but there are some steps you can take to make it as easy as possible. Examine your finances and know your credit history. Lenders evaluate your income, savings and credit history and employment history. Do not close any credit accounts within 6 to 12 months before applying for a mortgage loan. Keep older accounts open even if they are not used. The age of the credit accounts is used as a scoring factor when scoring performance over time. Do not make a major purchase as this could change your credit score or you debt to income value which could impact your ability to purchase your dream home

Historically buyers choose a 30-year fixed rate loan. The longer term mortgage monthly payments are lower than other loans. Principal is paid back over a longer period of time. Buyers want consistency and certainty and the 30-year fixed rate offers this stability over a long period of time. Payments are the same each month which make buyers feel more comfortable and able to budget better. Mortgage companies and banks still offer a 15-year fixed rate of mortgage but with this type loan your monthly payments are higher. Loan is paid off quicker since the principal is paid off in a horter amount of time. For the first time home buyer or buyers on a tight budget I usually recommend the 30 year fixed rate loan. If you decide to pay it off quicker you can send in an extra payment at least once a year to be applied to the principal balance or pay extra toward the principal each month when making the monthly payment. A Realtor is a valuable resource during the purchasing process. They are familiar with the type loans and programs available to buyers in the market today. LeBlancs Food Stores Opens Eighth Location Introducing New Frais Marche Concept

LeBlancs Food Stores opened their eighth south Louisiana location on Tuesday, November 12th at 6:30 am, and also introduce local shoppers to their new Frais Marche concept- thats Fresh Market for all of those non-French speakers! The new store is at the corner of Airline Highway and Duplessis Road and will be the fourth Ascension parish location for this local supermarket family. The 55,000 square foot location will be the first store that LeBlancs has built from the ground up since the original store and will serve as the

anchor for the Lagniappe Centre where several other

retail operators will be opening in the near future. This location honors our past, particularly our grandfather L.C. LeBlanc and our father M. Paul LeBlanc, while embracing the future, said Randy LeBlanc, co-owner of LeBlancs Food Stores

alongside his brother, Marcy. When our grandfather, L.C. Summer time had finally passed and the first day of dove season was now upon us. My hunting partner and I had been trying to hunt one of our wildlife management areas (Pointe-aux-Chene), in the coastal area of the state for the past two years. We had been denied that pleasure by tropical storms that had happened on those previous two dates. Three years ago I made the opening day hunt on that WMA and was very successful with a limit taken before 3:00p.m. As we approached the area, I told my partner that most of the doves enter the dove field from the northeast corner of the hunting zone. After checking in with management personnel, we entered the field where I had been successful in the past. At that point I noticed several signs in that portion of the property that read, "Handicapped hunters only". That portion of the property had several rows of vegetation that had been burned and the birds were favoring that area, just like they were three years ago. I was somewhat disappointed knowing that most of the birds would enter at that location, but we continued walking until we cleared the signs and found a place to set up. We hunted for about an hour without firing a shot. During that time we could hear quite a bit of shooting in the handicap zone. A severe thunderstorm developed to the south and was moving our way. Fear of the constant lightning and heavy rain made most of the hunters exit the field to wait out the the storm in the parking lot. The road out led us through the restricted area where there was constant shooting and people running around picking up birds, switching locations, etc. one group of hunters walking behind us stated "that don't look like handicap hunters to me", I agreed and we continued walking. There was a department official on site but he was not an enforcement agent and for whatever reason, he was letting the wrongdoing continue. As we waited out the storm in the truck, we discussed our options of what we would do after the storm cleared. We knew that if we

were going to be successful,we would have to get in the handicap field. Both of us were raised to know better, so that would not be an option. We decided that we would get as close as possible to that area and try our luck. When we re-entered the field we noticed that there were now droves of people of all ages and sexes in the handicap zone. The shooting was rapid as the doves were flying in that area. Again, we walked right through it. We set up about one hundred yards from there and could not get a shot. Being somewhat frustrated in looking at all the action right in front of us, we decided to stick with our morals and not enter that area. After an hour or so without any success, we decided to pack it up and go home empty handed. That event was very disappointing for me to witness. Above the fact that some grown- ups were disrespecting others, they were teaching their children, grandchildren, and girlfriends to do the same. I am happy to say that there were other hunters that knew better and refused to enter that field also. As a group, hunters are faced with enough opposition from those who oppose our great sport. The very least we should do as a group is to respect each other. My partner and I returned home without one bird to show for our effort. As I laid down that evening to go to sleep, it was comforting for me to know that we had done the right thing. Remember this, doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it is always the right thing to do, and we need to learn to do it even when no one else is looking..... Till next time, Do What's Right... Im All Right Youre All Right

Im alright-nobody worry bout me, Why you got to gimme a fight, Why dont you just let me be Kenny Loggins (Caddyshack) In 1972 a self-help book appeared on the New York Times best-seller list entitled Im OK-Youre OK. Dr. Thomas Harriss wildly-popular work was designed to assist a generation who had just survived the wars, assassinations, bad trips and counter-culture movements of the 60s. His theory of Transactional Analysis was much cheaper than an individual therapy session and used a P-A-C (ParentAdult-Child) method of solving problems. I received my first lesson in P-A-C-not from Dr. Harris, but from an umpire I disagreed with during my coaching tenure at St. Amant High. The ump-who was also a counselor at a local school-waited patiently while I ranted and raved and kicked dirt on the nearest base. Then in a calm and gentle counselors voice he said, Bill, I will not address your inner child, so when your adult stage returns, we can debate this call in a mature manner. Of course that just enraged me more and my inner child threw a real tantrum-complete with adult stage words that contained slanders, libels and words you never heard in the Bible. At that point, in the counselor/umps words, I was dishonorably discharged from the premises. In spite of that harsh lesson, I always liked the concept of the book. And if you yexperienced a weekend like mine that included a 5-overtime high school football game, two funerals for old friends and a thrashing from Nick Dont call me Tex Saban, I think the time might be ripe for an update. Come on people, smile on your brother and lets all tell one another, Im All Right-

Its All Right, Guys. Were All Right. Youre All Right. Actually, Ive had to convince people recently that I was indeed-all right. The underlying cause of both incidents was my beloved Highway 73 which these days makes the Baja Run look like the German Autobahn. Rushing home down Duplessis Road (behind the St. John Church) to get a windbreaker for my grandsons Coaches Pitch game, I saw my route to White Road blocked by three barricades. I contemplated cutting through the church parking lot but after surveying the line of cars from the Airline back to the river, I decided just to park at church and walk across. The guy with the Slow/Stop sign was completely taken aback to see a pedestrian and asked, Sir, are you all right? Yeah, Im all right, I answered and continued on my walkabout. I completed the 300-yard trip safely, grabbed a coat-and an adult beverage (Hey, its a long journey.)-and started back to my car. This time, it was a lady headed back toward I-10 that stopped as I took a bad step on the uneven pavement at the intersection. Bill, is that you? Are you all right? It was my buddy Holly from Sammys Grill and apparently I wasnt too convincing with my response because she turned around at the church entrance, risking life and limb to come check on me. She arrived just in time to see me stumble through a ditch, spilling beer on the coat thrown over my arm. I guess I did have sort of a homeless appearance because now her plea had a different tone. Bill, can I give you a ride somewhere? She was very sincere and somewhat concernedpossibly about losing one of her best customers. Im all right, Holly, I promise you. I live right across the road, that is my car and- I spared her the details of the whole story-thanks for stopping. She drove away reluctantly,

still not convinced if I was all right at all. Ironically, a similar scenario had occurred a few days earlier in another parking lot off 73this one across from Southpaws in front of Mike Toupss State Farm office. My partner in crime Frank Harris and I were scheduled to play in a card tournament at a Baton Rouge casino and his lovely wife Sondra had graciously agreed to be our designated driver. I was holding court at Southpaws when Frank called with an adjustment in the pickup plans. Were coming from Dutchtown and Sondra doesnt want to turn left off 73. Can we pick you up in Toupss parking lot? I looked out at the 2-way traffic jam that was the 5 oclock norm and agreed it would be safer for me to cross on foot. I filled a small ice chest with emergency rations, took a running start and ducked and dodged across the snarled mess with moves that Little Egypt would have been proud of. As I bent over to catch my breath, I heard the familiar voice of former LSU baseballer and current State Farms agent Buzzy Haydel who was just knocking off for the day. Coach, are you all right? I now noticed there were also a few secretaries now looking at me with a sense of bewilderment and a hint of sympathy. Im all right, Buzzy, I heaved. I just had to run across the street to Coach, can I give you a ride somewhere? Anywhere you want. I started to explain but Sondra-whos a more excellent driver than Rain Man-pulled up and saved the day. I was climbing into the back seat, thankful that no one else had witnessed my broken-street run, when a trucks horn blew from Highway 73. It was insurance agent, rodeo cowboy, entrepreneur (and full

of manure) and sometime-photographer Dustin Clouatre waving a camera in my direction. Now my plight would be all over the parish in a matter of minutes. Hey, Coach, are you all right? he shouted. Can I get you anything? Its nice to know so many people care. Speaking of people that care, some nice people at St. Amant put together a pre-game program before the Dutchtown contest to honor the schools first administration and coaching staff from 1978. All of those guys not only felt all right being named honorary captains but most of them (present company excluded) looked all right also. The first principal was Roy Stern whose cool professionalism was always a calming factor in the chaos of a new school opening. There were his two top assistantsLawrence Gipson whose booming James Earl Jones voice struck fear in many a student illegally out of class in the STA halls-and Clark Giffin who still plays tuba in the Baton Rouge Symphony and who showed me the ropes when I took over as a young coach at St. Amant Middle in 1977. The first head football coach Elsley Webb should have gotten a standing ovation for just getting 11 players on the field in that first season considering the hardships we had to endure. Looking around at the wonderful facilities the parish schools have now, its hard to believe that our first drill every day was to line up and walk the practice field to pick up the rocks, glass and wire to make it somewhat safe. Larry Williams, the Gators initial baseball coach, picked out the retro Astro-lookalike uniforms which I still wear to chosen games. I still get some interesting offers for that jerseywrinkle-free after all these years. Oh, the wonder of polyester. Two members of the original staff are still in education with Larry Favorite hanging on at St. Amant and Richard Brown serving the Ascension Parish School Board. Now thats more than all right in the dedication department. My football and basketball coach from old Dutchtown Don McDaniel was there and we lamented how fast the current roundball game is and how you dont see the Auburn

Shuffle anymore. It was fun visiting with those guys again and realize the standards they set back then have help St. Amant evolve into a high school thats way past all right today. Meanwhile, back at Southpaws on one of my soap box days, I was explaining my conspiracy theory in the Kennedy assassination (The 50th anniversary is November 22 so we are timely.) to a very patient Kyle the manager, who has heard most of my stories 8-10 times, when a true child of the road happened in. He dropped his backpack at the door, ordered a beer and surprisingly headed for the jukebox. Now if I looked anything like this guy when I was in the parking lots of Highway 73, I can see why Holly, Buzzy and everyone else were so worried. We figured him for five dollars tops-and hed already spent two on beer-and now he was perusing selections with what had to be his bottom dollar. If by some miracle he can figure out that high-tech juke box, whats he going to play? I wondered out loud. To our amazement, our road warrior played a trio of songs, so unique and diverse, that had he been a live musician, we would have called it a good set. His opener was Bonnie Raitts haunting I Cant Make You Love Me, followed it up with Darius Ruckers sing-along Wagon Wheel and closed it out with an old 60s standardappropriate in his case-They Call Me the Wanderer. As he packed up his stuff to go, I couldnt resist a comment so I walked over and told him, Man, I dig your tunes. Youre all right in my book. He slung his backpack over his shoulder and replied, Thanks, man. There aint nothing wrong with you either. I watched him walking toward the Interstate, making better time than the cars on 73 and humming an old Dion song and free as a Lynard Skynard bird and thought that guy was more all right than most. But I am changing the name of my book to There Aint Nothing Wrong with You. Happy Thanksgiving and remember whos around the table is more important than whats on it.

I Cant Believe Im Gonna Do This?
Thirteen years ago I started writing this article to fill space in the newly formed Ascension Magazine. At the time the article was to be a filler. Something to fill space when needed in the magazine. That is how the Thoughts from Bully article began. The collection of stories really sound like a bunch of crap. But its not. Its my life. Now Im being published. Once I started writing stories of my life I couldnt stop. It became a passion. I wrote about childhood, high school, girl friends and best friends. I have compiled a collection of the best and most fun, unique, bizarre, embarrassing, dumb ass, bull crap Ive ever heard. I can assure you the stories are not politically correct. However they are true stories. Well at least 95% true. I am proud to announce that the best and worst stories of my life are now going to be available to the public in a paper back book. Coming the first part of December, Thoughts from Bully book,

titled I Should Have Been Knocked in the Head When I was Born, will be available to purchase on newsstands or directly through e-mail. You get to read about me being held hostage by a terrorist toilet in the New Orleans Airport. Also a fun family story of my Mom swattin my butt for acting up. Thats fun? Who hasnt had that happen in their life. One of my favorites is, I Let Everybody Use My Hoe! I still contend everyone needs a good hoe in their life. Young or old a good hoe is always good to keep around. There will be sports and fishing stories. I dont know how

many people have had the opportunity to take a Gay man fishing. Enjoy, Brighten Your Life. Take a Gay Man Fishing?. I credit my story telling abilities to listening my Uncle Joe tell stories about him jumping behind enemy lines in World War II. In real life I found out he worked in supply and pulled a lot of KP. Youll get to know him in, Running with Uncle Joe!. Through the years there have been parties , New Years Eves and one Halloween I dressed for a haunted house and was Frankenstein. I used a frozen cow heart for a prop on the operating table in the Spook House. See what happens in, Somebody Stinks and I Think Its Me.

Im sure everybody has had the opportunity to speak to a police officer over a driving error. I pulled my pants down in front of State Troopers one time to make a point in, My Naked Butt Saved Me from Getting a Ticket. Way back in the 70s I was a bartender and when an older woman tried to take advantage of me. Read the bizarre chapter in my life that gets crazier in, I Tried Hooking Up with an Older Woman!. Another favorite of mine is the politically incorrect story, Mr. Twong Does Mr. Wong, Wong? I was once confronted while on a sales call by my client who was Asian. My last name is Strong and he said, Mr. Twong you did Mr. Wong, Wong?. The pranks, the jokes, the stories of plain Ole Folks are continuos throughout the book

but the funniest may be, Streaking Can Be Hazardous to Your ???. There nothing like running across Burnside butt naked and having your other two streaking partners run into an electric fence. The horses chasing use once we got through the fence was a little hairy also. The Thoughts from Bully book is going to be on newsstands this December and would be a great present for Christmas. Everybody needs a dumb read on the porcelain thrown. The title, I Should have been Knocked in the Head when I was Born was an affectionate saying my Mother used to say after I made her laugh. Im very proud to have this achievement marked off my bucket list however it is a little spooky to put my life stories out in one collection for the world to read.

EATELS REACH A KID TEACH A KID PROGRAM AWARDS TEACHERS $5,000 IN GRANTS
EATEL held a ceremony on October 25 honoring ten Ascension Parish teachers with $500 grants. EATELs Reach a Kid, Teach a Kid grants provide these teachers with the funds needed to implement unique and innovative classroom lessons that they will use to inspire and motivate their students to learn. For over 17 years, the annual program has helped fund these unique projects at local schools, impacting hundreds of primary, middle and high school students each year. To date, EATEL has awarded more than $70,000 in teacher grants. We were so pleased to see such high-quality applications from local teachers, said Ashley Phillips, EATELs Chief Operating Officer. But what impressed us the most was the variety of subject matters. This years winners will implement projects dealing with science, math, music, nutrition, and more! These teachers are essential in our community and Ascension Parish students are certainly benefiting from these classroom innovations. Ascension Parish Assistant Superintendents Denise Graves and Steve Westbrook addressed the audience, congratulating the teachers on their excellent work and encouraging them to continue on the path to excellence. Beryl Smith, EATEL Board Member and former teacher, also spoke, complimenting the teachers on their innovative ideas and commitment to their students success.

2013 EATEL grant winners include:

Melissa Bankhead LeBlanc Special Services Center Project: What I Need, When I Need It This grant will allow for Braille materials and low-vision aids for students across Ascension Parish to be ready at all times in a wellstocked supply closet. Items will include things like large-print and Braille rulers, talking and largeprint calculators, bold-lined and Braille graph paper, and many other items visually impaired students need on a regular basis. Carrie Bordelon Donaldsonville Primary School Project: Learning Through Hands-On Gardening This grant will serve a 1st grade, special education class. The class will create their own garden which will accommodate students' visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles. After harvesting fruits and vegetables, the students will taste the produce they have grown. Students will be allowed to freely access the garden as an area to gather thoughts, read and/or write, or when they feel the need for independent time. Amy Crain Dutchtown Middle School Project: A View from the Holocaust This grant will serve one hundred 7th graders. This project

encourages 7th grade English students to use literature to explore the historical events of World War II and the Holocaust. The project includes the reading of several non-fiction accounts and a field trip to the WWII museum in New Orleans. These activities will enrich student understanding of the events of our country's history as well as build their knowledge of world events and teach them why we study history in the first place. Carla Duplechin Gonzales Middle School Project: Concrete Learning This grant will involve a special education class. Concrete Learning will increase the opportunity and motivation to provide equal access in engagements for all learners by allowing each student to choose from various concrete molds to create their very own designs that they will bring home as tokens of their completed projects. Theyll learn by re-telling, sequencing, measuring, and being able to follow directions with a fun, hands-on learning process. Pam Gautreau Lakeside Primary School Project: A Reason to Read Aloud "A Reason to Read Aloud" is a cross curricular reading project that improves and enhances fluency and rhythm, stress, and intonation of speech, comprehension, and technology skills while using enjoyable and

informative texts through the implementation of Reader's Theater scripts. Students will integrate three disciplines: Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, to develop fluency and comprehension skills as they read, record, and listen to readers theater scripts. Students will use technology to create podcasts that encourage fun and interactive experiences to foster and promote effective learning. Quiana Green G.W. Carver Primary School Project: Music Play Curriculum Music education is an essential part of a young persons development. The music curriculum currently being used is from 1972. This grant will be used to buy music resources that will offer the children modern music programs. This grant will allow students to use current technology and animations to embed needed fluency and literacy techniques. Rachel McDowell Galvez Primary School Project: P.E. Movin' and Groovin' This grant will provide student exposure to a wide variety of music genres to teach gross motor skills. Numerous research studies have been conducted proving the positive effect music has on academic learning as well as on cognitive skills, attitudes and academic behavior. This grant will provide portable equipment and

songs to incorporate into daily lessons. Students will learn about different cultures, styles of music, and rhythm. Because this system is portable, students will be able to benefit from this whether theyre indoors or outdoors. Beth Sinanan St. Theresa Middle School Project: Green and Growing! Are you a Horticulturalist? This grant will serve sixty-nine 4th graders. Through on-site gardening at the schools campus, students will collaborate and use science skills to cultivate vegetable plants and document growth in a variety of ways as they study life cycles of plants. In the end, students will harvest vegetables and evaluate their horticultural techniques. Lessons learned will include cooperation, responsibility, patience, and nutrition. Carly Tamor Duplessis Primary School Project: Robotics Engineering Problem Solving for the Future This project will allow students to build, program, and operate a small robot. Students will decide what functions they want their

robot to have, then they will build their robots (without instructions), and use the provided software to program the robot. Students will problem-solve their way through engineering the robot to perform small tasks such as rolling forward and backward, turning, picking up an object, etc. Providing this type of activity for students allows them to experience life as an engineer at the elementary level. Joanne Zeringue Central Middle School Project: ExCEL Science ExCEL in ExCEL Science stands for Exploring Concepts Engineering Learning. Using the structure of science stations in the lab setting, groups of students will engage in engineering skills, working cooperatively to design, build, test and critique various models. Lab experiences will allow students to develop an understanding of forces, friction, motion and energy. Students will keep digital journals of their investigations. With this grant, students will be able to challenge each other in virtual engineering games, putting their newly developed engineering skills to the test in virtual scenarios.

8 oz crab fingers 1 lb whole unsalted butter 2 tsp table salt 1 tsp cayenne pepper tsp black pepper 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp chopped parsley 2 tsp liquid or powdered crab boil

Method: First cut the butter into small cubes and put in the microwave for 1 minute to soften or let stand at room temperature until soft. In a food processor or mixer add the softened butter and all other seasonings. Mix together until all the seasonings are incorporated throughout the butter. In a saut pan add about 4 oz of the compound butter and bring it up to a simmer. Then add your crab fingers. Let the crab fingers heat for about 1 to 2 minutes gently moving them around in the pan. Finish with a little more compound butter if desired and enjoy! The remaining butter can be rolled in plastic wrap and stored in the freezer for later use. This butter works great with shrimp and crawfish as well.
