DIAMETER, HEIGHT AND VOLUME ESTIMATION FROM THE STUMP OF FOREST SPECIES OF DURANGO STATE Gernimo Quinez Barraza 1, Francisco Cruz Cobos 1, Benedicto Vargas Larreta 2 y Francisco Javier Hernndez 2 RESUMEN

When a forest mass has been harvested following a management program and the size of the stumps are the only evidence, it is possible to estimate diameter, height and volume of standing trees by allometric relationships. In this paper is described an experiment in which 12 mathematical models were fitted to predict normal diameter, total height and stem volume from the diameter of the stump of Pinus arizonica, P. ayacahuite, P. durangensis, P. leiophylla, P. teocote and Quercus sideroxila in San Diego de Tezains, Santiago Papasquiaro municipality, which is located at the northwestern region of the state of Durango and belongs to the Sierra Madre Occidental. A sample of 267 felled trees and linear and non-linear models were used. The fitting of models indicates that there is a linear tendency between normal diameter and total height, in terms of stump diameter, while for the volume of the stump, there is a logarithmic relationship. Also, a similitude among species in regard to the relations of the studied variables was observed. The resulting equations may be applied in the reconstruction of scenes after a forestry intervention occurs or when a catastrophic event takes place.
Key words: Height of stem, breast-high diameter, diameter of the stump, mathematical model, allometric relationships, volume of the stem.

INTRODUCCIN
INTRODUCTION
Forests are appreciated, from an economic viewpoint, in terms of the amount of Wood that they produce; thus, one of the regular activities in forest biometry is the estimation of tree volume, by means of equations that predict it based upon some independent variables of easy measurement in the field. These models are essential mathematic tools to calculate volumetric stock and, consequently, they become a basic consideration for decision taking in forest management (Robinson y Wood, 1994). Normal diameter (dbh) is a useful variable to determine tree or forest mass volume, in order to define the structure of the forest or to select the trees that must be measured in an inventory, according to the sampling system. After harvest, when a tree has been cut, only the stump stays as an indicator of its size, and it can be used as a predictive variable of the normal diameter or of its volume (McClure, 1968). Bes and Gra (1990) proposed three aspects which makes mandatory to know the relation between the diameter of the stump and the 1.30 m diameter: 1) to quantify the extracted volume from illegal cuttings with the use of local volume tables; 2) when the information was not attained or if it was lost, which allows to know the distribution of diameters and basal area of lots and stands and 3) to estimate the amount of wood extracted in great areas. Literature about the prediction of tree volume from the diameter of the stump is scarce. Most of the contributions have tables, graphics or equations that predict normal diameter (McClure, 1968; Bylin, 1982; Weigel and Johnson, 1997). In these cases, volume estimation is performed in two phases: first is calculated normal diameter and then tree volume is obtained with a local cubication tariff (Bylin, 1982). However, there are times in which it is not available, which makes it necessary to use another tool for direct volume determination. Thus, Myers (1963), Nyland (1977), Bylin (1982) and Parresol (1998) related the diameter of the stump with tree volume in different forest species of North America. In Mexico, the only work related to this topic is that of Corral-Rivas et al. (2007), who calculated normal diameter and stem volume for Pinus cooperi C.E. Blanco in the forest region of El Salto, in Durango Sate. The aim of the actual study was to determine the mathematical model that better estimates normal diameter, total height and stump volume from diameter of the stump for Pinus arizonica Engelm., P. durangensis Martnez, P. teocote Schied. ex Schltdl. et Cham., P. leiophylla Schiede ex Schltdl. et Cham., P. ayacahuite Ehrenb. ex Schltdl. and Quercus sideroxyla Bonpl.

vary from 8 C at the highest zones up to 24 C in the lower parts, where average altitude hardly gets to 600 m (INEGI, 1993). The prevailing soil associations are chromic, haplic and eutric Litosol, Cambisol, Luvisol, Regosol and Feozem and pine-oak forest are the dominant types of vegetation (Programa de Manejo Forestal, 2006).
Methods
A total of 267 individuals of a data base from the trunk analysis made in 2006 were used; they were composed as follows: Pinus arizonica ( Pa, 46), P. durangensis ( Pd, 73), P. teocote ( Pt, 54), P. leiophylla ( Pl, 30), P. ayacahuite ( Pay, 27) and Quercus sideroxila (Qs, 37). Trees were selected based upon a stratified random sampling system and a minimum number of individuals by diametric category for each species, according to the tree structure of the area. The model was generated with information of permanent plots for forestry research which were established to develop the biometric system of the forest management program, en which it is suggested a minimal number of 15 trees for each representative category, 10 dominant and 5 in-between or suppressed. In order to take data, each tree was felled at the minimum possible cutting height of the stump; three sections were removed up to the normal diameter (1.30 m); the first two of 30 cm and the third one, of 70 cm tall. Later, 2 m long sections were subsequently taken until de peak of the tree was reached. Normal diameter, total length and of each section, diameters and lengths were measured for each individual. The volume of logs was calculated by the Smalian [1 ] formula and that of the final part with, that of the cone [2]:
Mtodos

In the case of M1 1 the MODEL non-linear procedure, of the same program, was used.
Fitting models
Hair et al. (1999) pointed out that not always the equations that better fit the sample bring the best estimations for the real values, so, the aim of a regression analysis is not to determine the best fit just for the sample, but to design the model that best describes the population as a group. This is why a measure used to assess the theoretical value of the regression is the error or residual, that is, the difference between the effective dependent variable and its predictive value. Residual analysis allows to calculate the most regular statistics; in this context, the fitness ability was analyzed from residuals, and of four statistics frequently used during the generation of forest

In Figure 2 are shown the predicted values against the obtained residuals from the M4 model. It can be observed that the distribution of errors does not follow a clear pattern, which suggests that the model has no heterocedasticity problems, while the interval of residual values is small, in all cases.

Diguez et al. (2003) advise it. Such statistics were adjusted to the original units of the variables that were used to make them comparable between them. Hair et al. (1999) and Bentez et al. (2004) declared that the aim of a regression analysis is to develop the model that better describes the population as a whole and advise that they be proved with an independent data sample from that used for adjustment.
CONCLUSIONS
Model fitness indicates a linear tendency between normal diameter and total height, in terms of stump diameter, while for stem volume, there is a logarithmic relation. M4, M8 and M12 models show statistics with good fit, which means that their use for normal diameter, total height and stem volume prediction is reliable for the selected species in terms of stump diameter and may be useful for the inventory and management of their populations. In general terms, M4, M8 and M12 models provide a satisfactory explanation of the behavior of normal diameter, total height and volume, respectively in regard to stump diameter, which makes it possible to conclude that they model the studied variables.
