Katie Guzman & Kaily Desantos Period 4 The Freedom Rides: Research Description During the freedom rides

men and women were in great danger on every bus ride they took to challenge the unjust laws. They were beaten, some of them even killed and busses were bombed. The freedom riders took place during May 1961. The freedom rides were significant in history because the government did not take their responsibility to make sure that all rights were created equal, and segregation was not suppose to be allowed. This topic was brought to our attention because it stood out as an inspirational part of history. Its very engaging to research about such a determined group of people such as the freedom riders. To find our research sources we rented books from the library and mostly went online. Our most valuable sources were found on the internet. A website that was very helpful was a PBS website titled Freedom Riders: Threatened. Jacked. Jailed. It provided a lot of information on the freedom rides, such as maps, important people apart of the rides, issues, biographies, etc. Another helpful source was a book titled The Freedom Rides it also provided a lot of information and photographs of the freedom rides. As we did more research, we got more and more interested because there are numerous events, one after the other that led to their change in history. We chose the main events to include in our entry, there were many interesting facts that we had to leave out so our presentation wont be too overwhelming. Some problems we overcame were finding primary sources because mostly all sources we used were secondary. Our topic on the freedom rides relates to our history theme, rights and responsibilities, because during this time the African Americans were fighting for

Katie Guzman & Kaily Desantos Period 4 their equal rights because the government failed to take their responsibility to make sure that all rights were created equal by segregating blacks and whites. It is important to study this topic because I think people should be aware of the big step the freedom riders took to stop segregation. If it werent for them, we probably would not have equal rights today. They played a big factor in the civil rights movement and people should be aware of that. From my research, I can conclude that the African Americans during this time were heroes because they fought for what they believed in, regardless if their lives were at risk. I can also conclude that the freedom rides journey was a very inspirational one. This has been a valuable learning experience for us because we learned to be thankful for the treatment, equality, and freedom that we have today. It has also been a valuable learning experience because we gradually got to learn about a very significant part of history that helped shape Americas community today. In conclusion, our research topic which is the Freedom Rides relates to the national history day topic of rights and responsibilities and is a very inspirational and life-changing part of history.
