DELAY, DELAY

It's true that I am behind in newsletters. This one should be a big one. I suffered a bout of malaria once in December and had a recurraice in the first days of January. Both cases were mild, but 1 dragged through those days. I am fine now. With my naturally slow pace at most everything, the amount of end-of-term marking overwhelmed me, too.
NORTHERN VOLTA CONVENTION

A real treat was a trip with Bro. Enoch Nyador and several other people to a regional Christmas convention in the Northem Volta Region. This is where the F.A.M.E. church planting work began. Hiere are five evangelists and five mother congregations and half a dozen daughter congregations. Over 200 people participated in the conventi(xi. 1was impressed with the smooth running of it and with the multiplicity of people who shared leadership and responsibility. No "one man shows" there. The usual ingredients of singing, dancing, evangelistic preaching, teaching sessions, a soccer match, youth quiz, testimonies, were all in evidence. Two features were a bit unusual; two ofthe churches had tambourine troupes who danced and played their tambourines almost fiercely dioreographed style; the second is that before each teaching or preaching time, the churches took tums presenting a song with dancing in their own tribal style. There are several language groups different fi^om the "bug three" ofthe South. Even the drum ythms change.

Several youth and a married couple gave their lives to Christ. The man and woman had lost two daughters to food poisoning. Since their gods had not protected them, but the church had ministered to them lovingly during their loss, they tumed to Christ. My privilege to ride along in a jam-packed vehicle on dirt roads and a grass track to a very muddy pond to witness the baptisms. Usuallythey borrow bicycles to make that trip.
The weekend visit was worth the tem hour joumey which included a wait for the ferry to cross the Volta River. About one^hird of it is very rough road.
SUNDAY SCHOOL AND SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

The competition to enter Senior Secondary School is very keen here. My Sunday School class pray a lot for each other in school matters. Two ofthem got the top grade of 6 in Junior Secondary School final exam and the other got a 7 which is also excellent. In answer to our prayers, all three ofthem got places in S.S.S. without their par^ts having to pay bribes. Now we continue to pray that their parents can come up with ihe needed fees for the next three years.

Dear Friends in Christ COLLEGE GAINS ACCREDITATION!

After two years of working through the process. Ghana Christian College and

Seminary was granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board of the MinistPi' of Education of Ghana as a tcrtiar\' institution. The government has realized that its three universities cannot meet all the post-secondar>' school educational needs in the countn. so they are trying to encourage upgrading of pri\'ate institutions to share in that responsibiht>'. Accreditation will make it possible for those who complete the course to be hired in government institutions as chaplains and to teach Bible Knowledge in government schools. Our main emphasis remains the training of church leaders, ftay for our discernment that we will accept those who are committed to Cluist and not just looking for a way to increase employment opportunities.
DARKNESS AND LIGHT

The planned power outages mentioned in the February letter have become a reality. The first plan was twenty-four hours on and twenty-four hours off. Last weekend it was changcd to three twelve-hour days of power followed by three twelve-hour niglits of power. This "power shedding" is supposed to slow down the lowering of the Volta River to prevent total shutdown of the hydro-electric plant before the rains come. The situation affects ever>'one. including those petty traders who sell ice water or fresh fish. There is a shortage of cement with resulting price increases. We arc managing all right with meals but we buy meat and fresh fruit and \egetables in small quantities. It is miserable to teach and stud> in hot classrooms with no fans. Most people suffer when there are no fans to sleep under. We will survive, but we must keep reminding ourselves of our other blessings such as a constant supply of water.
FURLOUGH PREPARATION

My plane reservation is made for August 20*^. First stop is Pennsylvania as usual, but I plan to be in
Florida, Lord willing, in time for the state convention in Orlando in September. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you!

GREAT NATIONAL EASTER CONVENTION

Over 1,000 Christian Church members gathered in the river town of Yeji, a nine or ten hour drive from Accra, to worship, study, fellowship and witness over the Easter weekend. Because ofthe distance, I had expected a lower attendance but was amazed and pleased when the total number exceededthat of two years ago here in the South. The balance was tipped by a couple hundred Northerners, many ofwhom cannot come when the convention is in the South. Mornings were devoted to worship and praise followed by Bible studies on the theme ofunity. Various activities took place in the afternoons. I was pleased that twenty-five people att^ded my workshopfor SundaySchoolteachers. Every eveningthe convention moved to a more accessible public groimd for evangelistic preadiing. At least a dozen converts were won
in those services.
KIM STAUFFER'S VISIT

This young lady from Pennsylvania came to have a two week taste of life on a foreign field, having perceived a pull to serve the Lord wherever he may lead. Kim embraced every experience here with grace and enthusiasm. She put up with tiie lack of electricity here (part time) and in Yeji (flilltime) and with the unreloiting heat this time of year. She joined the "technical team" from Abeka at the convention and helped them take down and set up equipment every time it was needed. In the process she established good friendships and learned a lot of culture. Kim was a fresh, young breeze blowing through our lives. We are glad she came!
NEW WELL AT THE NEW CAMPUS

The Church of Christ has a well-drilling ministry in Ghana in addition to their churdi planting and other benevolent services. They had drilled one well for us but it collapsed before they could get the casing in.

This week they brought a brand new rig in from the harbour and came to the campus to try again. This time they were successfiil! This well will be a wonderful blessing during construction and th-eafter. We praise God and thank the Church of Christ.

NEWS OF SOME OF THE CHURCHES

In the last month there have been at least ten baptisms in Abeka Christian Church. The one-year-old churdi at Awoshie is now administering their own finances according to a budget agreed upon by Abeka, the ^^other" churdi. Plans are being made toward tiieir "weaning" in (me more year. Pray diat those lowing leadership ability will mature in Christand gain decision-making expo-i^ce in the interim.
A new church has been laundied at Frafraha. a suburb of Accra, after a year of Bible studies to lay groundwork. David Kalb is overseeing the work of one of our senior students there.

First year Konkomba stud^it Philip Akwasi made an emergency trip home to take cement and otho* supplies to plasto* the mud church building undo* constnicti(xi. The rains had started and could have destroyed the building. Upon his r^um, he reported the beginning of a new churdi in his hometown. There are already about a hundred people in it and only two men with secondary school education are there to lead it. The need for trained leadership is urgent!
COLLEGE NEWS

Graduaticm is scheduled for July 18, a day of celebration. Pray for tiie feithflilness of the graduates as they enter ilill-time ministry.

The landregistration and building permits are still "in process." Remember the widow and the unjustjudge. Do not give up praying on these matters. An official body has agreed to make part of the work needed to get electricity to our new campus a government project, thus reducing our costs. Praise the Lord for that concession.

Once again, graduation was a grand and glorious affair: faculty in their varicolored robes and hoods, degree graduates in academic gowns trimmed in brilliant kente, diploma graduates in full kente cloth draped like Roman togas, and those who had earned
certificates dressed in their best suits and dresses.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEW CAMPUS?

Thanks be to God for a safe journey to Florida from PA and an easy settling in with my friend and hostess Frances
Henderson. The Florida Christian Convention was an exciting, encouraging experience with four super sermons and loving greetings from friends from various parts of the state.

By the end ofthis month I shall have reported to six churches and spoken to small groups within the churches. Appeal
letters to all the churches who currently support the college through me have been mailed. Other churches will also be
contacted to see ifthey can help.

GHANA NEWS

First Church of Christ, Bloomsburg, PA, as mentioned in the appeal letter, gave $5,ooo from their savings account, even

Heather and Patrick Cline andtheir children arrived in Ghana September 30 as planned and stayed with the Brights for a week. During the first night intheir own home, a thief broke in and stolea stereo. College classes are moving smoothly with a few less than 100 students.

The classroom building on the new campus is under construction. The foundation has been laid and blockwork and
cement pillars up to floor level are under construction.
NATIONAL MISSIONARY CONVENTION

From November 12 to 15 I shall be in Cincinnati for this important event. Ghana Christian College display is #610.

FURLOUGH ACTIVITIES

In November and December I am reporting and challenging eleven church, plus somesmall groups. 1am

also taking care ofroutine medical checkups. From No\'. 12 to 15. itwas m}' joy to attend tlie National
Missionary' Convention in Cincinnati and was one of four speakers at the Saturday luncheon. The purchase

of audio tapes enables me tobenefit from some oftheworkshops I was unable toattend.

Thanksgiving was Spent with a niece and her family inFlorida, and Christinas will be spent with relati\'es
in Penns>'lvania.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GHANA?

Students and faculty participated ina special Block-laying Ceremony to indicate the official beginning of the building program... Prayer Emphasis Week got the school year offtoa good start as speakers de^'eloped the theme "God Answers myer"... thePatrick Clines moved to a house much nearer the campus, saving
travel time to the work site each day.
