Demonstrate basic understanding that physical activity helps the body grow and be healthy. Lesson Summary: The lesson will be all about music. The big question the children will be learning about is different ways music can be used for. The main ways music is used is to listen to, to sing to, and to dance to. They will have opportunities to create music, sing songs, learn about instruments, play instruments, create their own instruments, and so much more. To use this lesson plan with young children they must be interested in music. Estimated Duration: This lesson will take a whole week during group time for 25 minutes.

Commentary: Main teaching time will be during group time, however there will be other parts of the room that promote what they learned in group time. This can turn out to be a very fun group time but has many challenges that come along with it. Children must be interested in the topic if not the whole lesson will fail. Keeping children intrigued will be easy as music is something most children enjoy. However, getting to rowdy and loud might interrupt the flow of group time. Make sure to explain rules of the group time when doing certain musical activities.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: First 5-6 minutes: Joining song The more we get together, together the more we get together the happier well be.. Next 10-15 minutes: KWL chart I will ask the students what they know about music. When they answer I will write under the K as for what the know. If they are unsure how to answer ask another open ended question like why do we have music or what does music do? After filling out what they know, see what they want to know or what they have questions about. Do they know what written music looks like? What does an orchestra sound like? Explain to them for the next week we will be talking all about instruments and will be answering the questions and at the end of the week will fill in the part under the L which will stand for what we have learned. Next 5-7 minutes: Show them the new area of the room called music area, which will grow each day. Explain that the ipads are fragile and they need to be careful. Explain each child will be called over during the day to show how to use the ipad for musical purposes. Then dismiss children for free choice time by saying things like If you have a piano in your house you can be dismissed Or If you know someone who plays guitar you can be dismissed. Day 2: First 5-6 Minutes: Joining song The more we get together, together the more we get together the happier well be.. Next 3 minutes: Review KWL chart, hit the point that we use music to sing. Next 10 minutes: I will read the book Animal Orchestra by Ilo Orleans. It is a rhyming book which is very easy to sing, so instead of reading I will sing the book to the children. When needed I will stop to ask questions or go over a vocab words.

Next 3-5 minutes: Discuss how I used music to sing the book. Then dismiss children by their favorite instrument or animal in the book, but I will sing what I say. Day 3: First 5-6 Minutes: Joining song The more we get together, together the more we get together the happier well be.. Next 7-8 minutes: Review KWL chart and talk to the children about how music is used to just listen to. Review how in the book it had different instruments and that you are going to listen to different instruments today. Next 10 minutes: Watch youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKdFirIBLwo First watch the video all the way through, I will read the words that label what the instrument is. Then I will explain that we are going to watch it again pausing after each instrument, so the children can express how they like the sound of the instrument. Also after each pause ask them where they think the instrument may be used. Dismiss children by their favorite sounding instrument ( violin, saxophone, harmonica, cymbals, trombone, etc.) Day 4: First 5-6 Minutes: Joining song The more we get together, together the more we get together the happier well be.. Next 5 minutes: Review KWL chart and what they have learned so far. Focus on how music can be used for movement. After review have each child spread out to have enough personal space, so they have enough room to dance. Next 10 Minutes: Use just dance kid youtube videos for the children to follow along with. In between videos take a breather for the children and reiterate that music helps to create movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnpWLcd1iGU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sfTdfv_MoA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZmsKcaAbJ4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUvCgpUrqo8&list=PLF2C13307D279CCA7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsSdZy7giNg&list=PLF2C13307D279CCA7 Day 5: First 5-6 Minutes: Joining song The more we get together, together the more we get together the happier well be.. Next 5 minutes: Review KWL chart and add what they have learned. The next 15 minutes: Children should have brought in instruments they made at home. They each will be given a chance to share their instrument with the class and play during the songs. Next 3-4 minutes: Sing songs that are familiar (wheels on the bus, old macdonald, bingo) Dismiss kids with certain instruments first to put away then have free choice.

Pre-Assessment: I will observe the children in my classroom, to see what areas they are in the most. Then add something musical to that area and see how they use it. It will show if they are open to use musical toys and learn about music. Also show if they properly know how to use it. Also the KWL chart is like a pre-Assessment. The standards for playing the instruments that include fine and gross motor can be observed all throughout the classroom. Scoring Guidelines: This is all my judgment. If they completely ignore the toy/prop they do not feel comfortable to use it and probably know very little. Also I can see their fine and gross motor skills are strong enough to play instruments or dance.

Post-Assessment: The learning part of the KWL chart is the assessment. Scoring Guidelines: No scoring, just observing who has spoken about what they have learned. Also observing if they use what they learn into their play. Young children learn through play are still developing reading and writing skills that should not be degraded by a test.

Differentiated Instructional Support Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: Those children can help the other children and explain what they know. With younger children most like to participate with the group and will want to share their knowledge. No child is forced to be included in group time, if they do not want to participate there are other areas they can play that wont interfere with group time. Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material: Have pictures of the instruments with print on the walls at eye level. Have props specifically for the lesson in the dramatic play.

Extension http://virtualmusicalinstruments.com/piano http://virtualmusicalinstruments.com/drums http://virtualmusicalinstruments.com/bongos http://virtualmusicalinstruments.com/pan-flute These sights are virtual instruments the children can play. These will have qr codes on the wall by the ipads. So children can scan the qr code and play with the instrument. Also in the same area there will be sheet music and pencils. So if children want to write their own music they can. This goes with the theme of music but also lets the child explore different instruments. It encourages them to play and see they all can be song writers.

Homework Options and Home Connections A few weeks before the lesson a parent flyer will be set home explaining we are coming up to this lesson. It will ask parents to take time and teach their children about instruments. The parent will be responsible to make an instrument with their child to bring to class for the last day of large group. If they need materials they may use materials from the classroom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3zb3hzKYms I will provide a few links for the parents but this is one example. Also I will let parents know they can go to youtube and search making instruments for children.

Interdisciplinary Connections Connected with writing as the children during free choice will have a chance to write music. Also I could connect it with math if we went on to learn more about how music comes to be. So teaching about a beat and rhythms. Materials and Resources:

Additional Notes After learning about music I will offer the children a chance to use what they learned to create their very own story using storybird.com. Also if a child did write a song they will be given a chance to share with the class and even record. If they want to record we will then create QR code to send to parents and to keep in their portfolio.
