MULTIPLICATION WHEN THE TWO NUMBERS ARE BETWEEN 11 AND 19

The first and perhaps one of the most important tricks for you to know in any investment banking, trading or corporate interview is how to multiply two numbers between 11 and 19, extremely quickly. I will agree with you that it is not a difficult calculation overall, but the trick I am about to show you will blow your mind as to just how easy it really can be! Many people are asked this particular question in their interview. Theres no guarantee that you will be asked of course, but knowing this trick would be the best course of action without a doubt. Furthermore, dont be surprised if you are in the middle of answering a question they have asked, such as, tell me about yourself?, when they almost rudely cut you off and throw a problem at you such as 13 x 18 and expect an answer immediately. Obviously this designed to test how you handle pressure and how mentally agile you are. My hope is that after this first book youll know two amazing tricks that I hope you will go to town on practicing and memorizing their methods.

MULTIPLYING THE TEENS 11 x 19

Add the first number to the last digit of second number. OR Add the second number to the last digit of first number. This concept is called Cross Addition.

11 + 19 or 11 + 19
11 + 9 = 20; 1 + 19 = 20 In both the cases we get 20.

Now our answer will look like 20X. We now must find the X part: Add the multiplication of the last digits of each number. 1x9=9 9x1=9 This is the X part of our answer. Now our answer will look like 209.

So, 11 x 19 = 209

PRACTICE QUESTIONS Try the following problems (you will receive an email tomorrow with a full practice sheet). 1. 2. 3. 4. 11 x 14 12 x 14 13 x 12 16 x 11

EXAMPLE WITH A CARRY! 14 x 18

Add the first number to the last digit of second number. OR Add the second number to the last digit of first number. This concept is called Cross Addition.

14 + 18 or 14 + 18
14 + 8 = 22; 4 + 18 = 22 In both the cases we get 22.

Now our answer will look like 22X.

We now must find the X part: Add the multiplication of the last digits of each number.

4 x 8 = 32 8 x 4 = 32
This is the X part of our answer. Now our answer will look like 22 2. The trick here is to add carry the three onto the next number. This would be seen as: 2(2+3)2. Thus our answer is 252
3

So, 14 x 18 = 252

ILLUSTRATION (INVOLVING CARRY)

Why not have another illustration?

14 x 17
Perform Cross Addition.

14 + 17 OR 14 + 17 14 + 7 = 4 + 17 = 21.
Answer looks like 21X. Now, multiply the last digits to get the X part. 4 x 7 = 7 x 4 = 28 In this case we observe that the X part is a two-digit number. So, keep 8 in place of X and add the 2 as carry in 21.

21X 2128 238

PRACTICE QUESTIONS
This is just some quick practice before we send your full practice sheet to you tomorrow.

MULTIPLYING TWO NUMBERS WHEN ONE OF THEM IS 11

This is another personal favourite and it has been known to be asked. However, this is more important for knowing when it comes to normal speed arithmetic problems. Follow the method we will show you, 11x multiplication will be the easiest thing you have ever done. The first illustration is the classical way people solve these problems and its certainly not a bad approach so we will outline it here. However, the approach demonstrated afterward will blow your mind.

CLASSICAL ILLUSTRATION
11 x 28 Multiply the other number by 10 and add the new number to the original number. This will be the answer. OR Trail the number with 0 (28 280) and add it to the original number. Add 28 and 280 280 +28 308 So, the answer is 308 11 x 28 = 308

PRACTICE QUESTIONS
How fast can you go with the classical method? It shouldnt be too slow, but give these another go when youve seen the next method.

1. 11 x 34 2. 11 x 25 3. 11x 47

SPEED ILLUSTRATION
Looking at the number, other then 11, add the two digits together and slot that answer in between the two digits. Best demonstrated through an example:

11 x 23
Add the digits of 23 We get, 2 + 3 = 5 Insert this 5 between 2 and 3. So, the answer is 253

11 x 23 = 253 11 x 23 = 2(2+3)3 = 253

We can generalize that:

11 x XY = X(X +Y)Y
If X + Y is not a single digit number then we have to add the carry to the X

ILLUSTRATION WITH A CARRY 11 x 87

Add 8 and 7 8 + 7 = 15 Keep 5 in between, and add the carry 1 to 8.

11x 87
= 8(8 + 7)7 = 8(15)7 = 8157 = 957 (the sum this time is a 2-digit number) (keep 5 in the middle and carry 1 to 8) (add 8 + 1 = 9) (answer)

THREE DIGIT BY 11
This trick can utilized extremely efficiently for numbers greater than two digit, numbers such as 11 x 857 and 11 x 9376. This is something we cover in much more detail in The Art of Speed Arithmetic, our most highly regarded book.
