By 5-Year U.S. Navy Warfare
Testing Programs Located in
the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of
Mexico

The United States Navy will be decimating
millions of marine mammals and other aquatic
life, each year, for the next five years, under
their Warfare Testing Range Complex
Expansions in the Atlantic, Pacific, and the Gulf
of Mexico. The National Marine Fisheries
Service (NMFS under NOAA), has already
approved the "taking" of marine mammals in
more than a dozen Navy Range Warfare Testing
Complexes (6), and is preparing to issue
another permit for 11.7 millions marine
mammals (32 Separate Species), to be
decimated along the Northern, California,
Oregon and Washington areas of the Pacific
Ocean (7).
U.S. Department of Commerce - NOAA
(NMFS) Definition: "TAKE" D e f i n e d
under the MMPA as "harass, hunt, capture,
kill or collect, or attempt to harass, hunt,
capture, kill or collect." Defined under the
ESA as "to harass, harm, pursue, hunt,
shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect,
or to attempt to engage in any such conduct."
Definition: Incidental Taking: An
unintentional, but not unexpected taking
(12).
The total number of marine mammals
that will be decimated in the Atlantic, Pacific
and the Gulf of Mexico for the next five years is
unknown. The NMFS approvals will have a
devastating impact upon the marine mammal
populations worldwide and this last Navy
permit, which is expected to be issued in
February 2010, for the "taking" of more than
11.7 million marine mammals in the Pacific will
be the final nail in the coffin for any healthy
populations of sea life to survive.
Now with ever-increasing numbers of
permits being issued for sonar programs in more
than twelve ranges in the Pacific, Gulf of
Mexico, and the Atlantic regions of the United
States, our marine mammals and other sea life
are facing complete devastation. When you add
bomb blasts to this list, warfare testing of all
types, future war testing practice, and the toxic
chemicals which are both airborne and to be
used underwater, there is little chance that most
marine life will survive in any significant
numbers. Our U.S. Senators and U.S.
Congressmen refuse to postpone these
disastrous "takings" or hold U.S. Congressional
Hearings while pretending to be ocean
environment friendly in their re-election
speeches.
Earlier this year, June 8th through June
16, 2009, a delegation from Connecticut and
California spent time walking the halls of the
U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

We left petitions, color fliers, and information
about saving our marine mammals, requested a
postponement and U.S. Congressional
Hearings. Ninety-nine senate offices were
visited and 2/3 of offices in the U.S. House of
Representatives. The silent response from our
elected officials regarding these two requests
has been zero…one U.S. Congressman even
stated that citizens would be "laughed out of the
halls of the U.S. Congress for suggesting that
we protect our marine mammals". Corporate
paid "Lobbyists", who hand out money by the
$Millions, on the other hand, are always
accepted at hearings, give testimony, and are
welcomed in the halls of Congress…apparently
the voices of citizens of the United States are
not given the same status.
These virtually unregulated Navy
Warfare Testing Programs already approved are
now taking a toll on marine mammals, the
fishing and ocean tourism industries, and on all
aquatic life. Many U.S. Senators and
Congressmen are ignoring these issues by
pretending that they doesn't exist even though
they have been informed in advance of these
programs.
A brief history of the Navy Warfare
Testing Program is needed to understand the
full implications of this Pentagon/Navy Warfare
Testing Program. In 2004, the Bush
Administration signed a bill weakening U.S.
Environmental Laws (1), with regard to the
U.S. Navy. And then in 2008, President Bush
signed an executive order allowing the Navy to
be exempt from environmental laws which
protects endangered and threatened species (2-
4). The Navy Southern California Complex
was the first one to benefit from this executive
order. Soon other Navy Range Complexes were
obtaining exemptions from the NMFS with
little or no oversight or significant mitigation
measures (5).

A partial listing of known Navy Range
Complexes (6), shows the amazing scope of the
disaster. According to U.S. Congressman
Waxman in a letter dated March 12, 2009:
"…The Navy estimates that its sonar training
activities will "take" marine mammals more
than 11.7 million times over the course of a
five-year permit…The sonar exercises at issue
would take place off the Atlantic and Pacific
coasts, Hawaii, Alaska and in the Gulf of
Mexico - affecting literally every coastal state.
In many regions, the Navy plans to increase the
number of training exercises or expand the areas
in which they may occur. Of particular concern
are biologically sensitive marine habitats off our
coasts, such as National Marine Sanctuary and
other breeding habitats…In all, the Navy
anticipates that its sonar exercises will "take"
marine mammals more than 2.3 million times
per year, or 11.7 million times over the course of
a 5-year permit…." This statement was made in
response to public inquiries regarding the Navy
Northwest Training Range schedule for
Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and
Idaho.
KTVU Oakland San Francisco
Television Station is the only television station
to investigate and air a story about this U.S.
Navy program (13), on May 18, 2009. It took a
great deal of courage, in the face of the fact that
no other major television networks would carry
this story. A few courageous radio stations are
also helping to get the word out to the public.
Published in the United States Federal
Register on March 11, 2009:
The United States Navy published an
application, as an addendum to their expanded
Warfare Testing program, in the U.S. Federal
Register, dated March 11, 2009. This
application from the Navy "…requests
authorization to take individuals of 32 species
of marine mammals during upcoming Navy
Warfare testing and training to be conducted in
the NWTR areas (off the Pacific coasts of
Washington, Oregon, and northern California)
over the course of 5 years…"
The Navy Warfare Testing Program will
"…utilize mid- and high frequency active sonar
sources and explosive detonations. These sonar
and explosive sources will be utilized during
Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) Tracking
Exercises, Mine Avoidance Training, Extended
Echo Ranging and Improved Extended Echo
Ranging (EER/IEER) events, Missile Exercises,
Gunnery Exercises, Bombing Exercises, Sinking
Exercises, and Mine Warfare Training…"

The "taking" of marine mammals negatively
impacts the entire ecology of our oceans and the
life in them which feeds large numbers of people
and other species around the world. It should
be noted that the list of toxic chemicals that the
Navy proposes to use is a long one as noted in
the Navy E.I.S. Depleted uranium, red and
white phosphorus, mercury, lead, and a whole
host of chemicals known to be toxic not only to
man, but to marine life, are being served up on
the "Navy Warfare Chemical Menu" that will
contaminate our air, water, and soil.
Since all of the Navy Warfare Training
Range Complexes have received, or will receive
in the near future, permits to "take" marine
mammals during their respective 5-year warfare
training programs the cumulative and
synergistic effects of losing millions of marine
mammals will be disastrous. It is time to say no
to any future permits being issued by the
National Marine Fisheries Services. Please feel
free to write or call National Marine Fisheries
Service (9), regarding the U.S. Navy
Environmental Impact Statement (10). Your
elected officials in Washington, D.C., need to
hear from all of us on this critical issue.
On May 28, 2009, U.S. Congressman Mike
Thompson from California, in a Press Release
to NOAA, made the following statements which
could be directed toward any ocean Navy
testing range:
"…I am concerned about the United
States Navy's ability to properly review the
environmental impacts of proposed
enhancements in its Northwest Training Range
Complex (NWTRC)… I am particularly
concerned that NOAA's existing mitigation
measures may not be best suited for the
protected marine mammals and endangered
salmonids present in the Pacific Northwest… I
am also concerned about proposed changes to
current levels of activity in the NWTRC that
focus on training for new aircraft and ship
classes and physical enhancements to the
training range. The Navy's Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) acknowledges that these
changes, particularly those related to its
increased use of mid-frequency sonar, are likely
to have measurable impacts on 32 protected
marine mammal species known to inhabit the
NWTRC…"
Congressman Thompson continues:
"…As the Navy moves forward with
plans to train on new weapons systems, it is
essential that NOAA identifies the
environmental impacts of these new aircraft,
ships and submarines - and their accompanying
mitigation measures - specifically with
reference to the productive ocean habitats and
species that define the Pacific Coast… I am not
aware of any specific elements included in the
evaluation and am concerned that the review
will be inadequate to address the Navy's EIS
with respect to protection of Pacific Coast
ocean ecosystems. NOAA's comprehensive
review is particularly important given that the
Navy has estimated shipboard visual
monitoring for marine mammals - the most
commonly employed sonar mitigation measure -
to be effective only 9% of the time. It is
important that NOAA take immediate steps to
validate its comprehensive review of mitigation
measures. Specifically, I request that you
provide my office with an outline of the
comprehensive review process and answers to
the following questions:
1. What mitigation measures will be
reviewed during NOAA's process?
2. What data will NOAA use to identify
those mitigation measures best able to protect
marine species?
3.How will your agency's recom-
mendations target specific species, habitats or
training activities of concern?
4. How will NOAA's recommendations
address sonar impacts to species other than
marine mammals?
5. How will NOAA or the Navy establish
performance standards to ensure that
recommended mitigation measures are
functioning as intended?..."

The public should also be informed of
any information received by Congressman
Thompson's office. In addition, there are a few
more questions which need to be answered:
1. What are the synergistic and cumulative
effects of all the permits that have been issued
in the last two years to Naval Range Complex
requests?
2. Bomb blasts and toxic chemicals are
also being tested by the Navy and NOAA
reviews are not including information on the
Navy Hazardous Waste and Toxic Chemicals
sections of the Navy E.I.S., such as
bioaccumulation of chemicals in the food chain,
death from exposure to toxic chemicals and
bomb blasts.
3. The Navy will also be conducting
classified future warfare testing. Since the
public is not to be informed of those tests,
chemicals being used, electromagnetic weapons
systems, and other air or land based tests, who
is protecting sea life, human health, water, soil,
and air from pollution and other experimental
tests?
4. Human health from airborne pollutants,
toxic debris, and shoreline contamination from
toxic chemicals should also be considered in the
NMFS evaluation. The protection of cruise
ships, fishermen, ocean tourists, U.S.
Coastguard personnel, and the public who swim
in the ocean should also be considered in their
evaluations. This is not just a marine mammal
issue.
It is now time for all of us to weigh in
with regard to these warfare programs which
will devastate our marine mammals, pollute our
air and water, and have negative impacts on
human health. We should have U.S.
Congressional Hearings and a postponement of
these programs until such time as the public can
be informed about these issues. Call your
elected officials today.

negative impacts of geoengineering and
persistent jet contrails on tree and plant health,

Point Presentation to colleges, universities and
interested groups. She has been interviewed on
numerous radio and television programs with
regard to these programs.
In 1995, Rosalind, now retired, became
a certified California United State Department
of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency
Agriculture Crop Loss Adjustor working in
more than ten counties throughout California.
Many crop losses throughout the State can be
attributed to weather related causes.

It was the morning of Wednesday,
November 5, 1975. To us, the seven men
working in Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest,
it was an ordinary workday. There was nothing
in that sunny fall morning to foreshadow the
tremendous fear, shock, and confusion we
would be feeling as darkness fell.
We were working on the Turkey Springs
tree-thinning contract. Basically, thinning
involves spacing and improving the thick stands
of smaller trees to allow for their faster growth.
That day, November 5, we were cutting a fuel-
reduction strip up the crest of a ridge running
south through the contract. Fuel reduction is the
process of cutting the thinning slash into lengths
and piling it up to be burned in the wet season.
The boss, Mike Rogers, was twenty-
eight, the oldest of the seven men. He had been
bidding these thinning contracts from the Forest
Service for nine years. That had been long
enough to learn (the hard way) all the tricky
pitfalls of the business. He was getting to where
he could fairly consistently gauge the price per
acre that would underbid the other contractors
and still allow a profit margin. Turkey Springs
was the best contract, profitwise, Mike had ever
been awarded. In fact, it paid the highest acre-
price he had ever received.
When we are piling, some of the men
run saws while the others pile. I was running a
saw, as were Allen Dalis and John Goulette.
Dwayne Smith, Kenneth Peterson, and Steve
Pierce were piling behind the cutters as we
worked our way up the strip.
Dwayne Smith wasn't aware of it, but I
had to be constantly careful to fell my trees so
as to miss him. His inexperience, or maybe over
eagerness, was causing him to work to close to
me, instead of allowing a little accumulation of
slash to put some distance between us. But at
least he was trying.
I could not say the same for Steve. I
could see Mike far back down the strip,
restacking some sloppy piles to bring them up to
specification. Steve took advantage of the boss's
absence to rest his can momentarily on a handy
log. He was ordinarily a good worker, but was a
little disgruntled today because Mike had
blamed him for some bad piles Dwayne had
made.
I was trying to keep my distance from
the other men, but we were coming together on
a thick place to one side of the piling strip. The
noise of my own saw is loud enough, even with
earplugs, without revving all three of them in
one spot. Just then I saw a shadow and jumped
barely in time to escape a falling tree. I looked
to see who had cut it. Allen. His mocking grin
let me know it was no accident. I didn't let on
that he had needled me. I moved farther up the
strip to work. Allen always cut like a crazy man.
He was a faster sawyer than anyone out
there, even me. His speed helped acre-
production, but it kept him from being up to
working every day. His uncontrollable temper
was probably what made him saw like that,
taking his anger out on the trees. Allen had
nearly come to blows with almost everyone on
the crew, including me. He had a way of picking
fights he never finished. Although our
differences were forgotten as far as I was
concerned, and we were friendly on the job, I
suspected that Allen might have one or two
lingering bad feelings toward me.
The afternoon sun was starting to cool as
it began angling steeper down in the west. In the
mountains, sundown comes early. It gets dark
very quickly when old Sol slips behind the trees
and out of sight behind the high ridges. The
gathering chill was beginning to numb my nose.
With summer ending, it was starting to get
down to five or ten degrees at night. I worked a
little faster to ward off the chill, eagerly
anticipating the reprieve of the day's conclusion.
Not long to go before we could head for home.
Sunset had been fifteen minutes earlier,
but we kept cutting in the waning light. I
checked my watch again. It was six o'clock at
last! Mike was still down the hill a little way,
picking up and repiling. I yelled and took the
liberty of giving the stop-work signal. The
sound of the saws died; the final echoes
absorbed into the deepening dusk.
We loaded the chainsaws and gas and oil
cans into the back of the '65 International. After
arranging the gas cans so they would not tip
over and leak on the bumps, Mike slammed the
tailgate tightly. The decrepit pickup groaned on
its tired old suspension as everyone piled in.
There was Dwayne by the left rear door, Jown
and Steve in the middle, and Allen by the right
rear door. In the front, I sat by the door, riding
shotgun. Ken sat in the middle, and of course
Mike was driving. The seven of us usually sat in
the same place every day. Nonsmokers in front,
smokers in back.
Mike started the old pickup and we
climbed north up the ridge toward the Rim
Road. It was 6:10. Barring any breakdowns, we
should be home before 7:30. We left the
windows down so we could cool off some. We
were still warm from laboring, in spite of the
evening air. Mike, Ken, and I do not smoke and
we prefer to inhale genuine, unadulterated air.
The four in the backseat lit up as soon as we
were in the truck, eager after hours without a
cigarette. The fresh air coming in my window
was bracing. We usually nap on the way to work
every morning, but none of us ever feels drowsy
on the way back to town. The rousing activity
on the job hones a keenness that stays with us

all the way home.
Bouncing over the water-bars in the road
- humps of dirt that prevent the road from
washing out in the rainy season - the truck kept
bottoming out on its springs with a dull
clunking sound. The fellows started cracking
jokes about the pickup.
Just then my eye was caught by a light
coming through the trees on the right, a hundred
yards ahead. I idly assumed that the glow was
the sun going down in the west. Then it
occurred to me that the sun had set half an hour
ago. Curious, I thought it might be the light of
some hunters camped there - headlights or
maybe a fire. Some of the guys must have
caught sight of it too, because the men on the
right side of the truck had fallen silent.
As we continued driving up the road
toward the brightness, we passed in sight of it
for an instant. We barely got a glimpse through
gnarled branches before we rolled past the
opening in the trees.
"Son of a . . ." Allen started.
"What the hell was that?" I asked.
My eyes strained to make sense of the
glimmering through the dense stand of trees
blocking our vision. From my open window, I
could see the yellowish brilliance washing
across our path onto the road another forty yards
ahead. Intrigued, I was impatient to get past the
intervening pines.
From the driver's seat, Mike could not
look up with the proper angle without leaning
way over, "What do you guys see?" he
demanded curiously.
Dwayne answered, "I don't know - but it
looked like a crashed plane hanging in a tree!"
Finally, our growing excitement spurred
Mike into wringing out what little speed the
pickup could still achieve on the incline. We
rolled past the intervening evergreen thicket to
where we could have an unobstructed view of
the source of the strange radiance. Suddenly we
were electrified by the most awesome,
incredible sight we had seen in our entire lives.
"Stop!" John cried out. "Stop the truck!"
As the truck skidded to a dusty halt in
the rocky road, I threw open the door for a
clearer view of the dazzling sight.
"My God!" Allen yelled. "It's a flying
saucer!"

Mike shut off the engine. We watched,
spellbound. The men on the left side of the truck
leaned over so that they could see. There, a mere
twenty feet above the ground, a strange, golden
disc hovered silently. Our attention was riveted
on that object poised in the air. Impaled by the
sight, we were held transfixed for one long,
silent moment that felt like an eternity.
The cold, jarring reality of what we were
witnessing struck fear and awe to the core of
every one of us. Suddenly beholding its vivid,
magnificent structure summoned all emotions at
once. You could almost hear our hearts
pounding above that suspended instant of
silence. Less than thirty yards away, the metallic
craft hung motionless, fifteen feet above a
tangled pile of logging slash.
The craft was stationary, hovering well
below the treetops near the crest of the ridge.
The hard, mechanical precision of the luminous
vehicle was in sharp contrast to the primitive
ruggedness of the dark surroundings. Its edges
were clearly defined. The golden machine was
starkly outlined against the deepening blue of
the clear evening sky.
The soft yellow haze from the craft
dimly illuminated the immediate area with an
eerie glow. Under the weird light, the encircling
forest took on bizarre hues that were very
different from its natural colors. The trees, the
brush, and the grass all reflected subtle, peculiar
new shades.
I estimated the object to have an overall
diameter of fifteen or twenty feet; it was eight or
ten feet thick. The flattened disc had a shape
like that of two gigantic pie-pans placed lip to
lip, with a small round bowl turned upside down
on the top. Barely visible at our angle of sight,
the white dome peaked over the upper outline of
the ship. We could see darker stripes of a dull
silver sheen that divided the glowing areas into
panel-like sections. The dim yellowish light
given off by the surface had the luster of hot
metal, fresh from a blast furnace.
There were no visible antennae or
protrusions of any kind. Nothing that resembled
a hatch, ports, or window-like structures could
be seen. There was no motion and no sound
from the craft. It almost appeared to be dead in
the air.
I glanced from one to another stricken
face. Turning back to that impelling spectacle in
the air, I was suddenly seized with the urgency
to see the craft at close range. I was afraid it
would fly away and I would miss the chance of
a lifetime to satisfy my curiosity about it. I
hurriedly got out of the truck and started toward
the hovering ship.
The men were alarmed by my sudden
action.
"What do you think you're doing?" Mike
demanded in a loud, harsh whisper.
Placing my feet quietly, I quickly
stalked closer to the mysterious vehicle.
Stepping over a low-leaning fir sapling, I
carefully picked my way through the opening in
the trees. I put my hands in my pockets in
response to the cooler twilight air outside the
truck.
"Hey, Travis!" the men warned
insistently.
I stopped walking for a long, hesitant
moment. I paused and turned to look back at the
six men staring questioningly at me from the
truck. The sober realization of what I was doing
abruptly heightened the doubt I was already
wrestling with. What should I do? I asked
myself. Maybe I'm being foolhardy, I told
myself. I won't get too close . . . but what if
there's somebody inside that thing? I faltered.
Finally I reassured myself with: I can always
run away.
I was committed. Without replying to
the guys, I resolutely turned and continued my
brazen approach. I moved more slowly,
cautiously covering the remaining distance in a
half-crouch. I straightened up as I entered the
dim circular halo of light softly reflecting onto
the ground under the craft. I was about six feet
from being directly beneath the machine.
Bathed in the yellow aura, I stared up at the
unbelievably smooth, unblemished surface of
the curving hull. I was filled with a tremendous
sense of awe and curiosity as I pondered the
incomprehensible mysteries possible within it.
I had become aware of a barely audible
sound coming from the ship. I could detect a
strange blend of low- and high-pitched
mechanical sounds. There were intermittent
high, piercing, beeping points overlaid on the
distant, low rumbling sound of heavy
machinery. The strange tones were so mixed
that it was impossible to compare them to any
sound I could remember ever hearing.
"Travis! Get away from there!" Mike
yelled to me.
I shot a fleeting look at the pickup
parked in the road, then turned my attention
back to studying the incredible ship.
Suddenly I was startled by a powerful,
thunderous swell in the volume of the vibrations
from the craft. I jumped at the sound, like that of
a multitude of turbine generators starting up. I
saw the saucer start wobbling on its axis with a
quickening motion, in a pattern like the erratic
spin of an unstabilized top. The same side
continued to face me as the craft remained
hovering at approximately the same height
while it wobbled.
I ducked into a crouch when a
tremendously bright, blue-green ray shot from
the bottom of the craft. I saw and heard nothing.
All I felt was the numbing force of a blow that
felt like a high-voltage electrocution. The
intense bolt made a sharp cracking, or popping,
sound. The stunning concussion of the foot-
wide beam struck me full in the head and chest.
My mind sank quickly into unfeeling blackness.
I didn't even see what hit me; but from the
instant I felt that paralyzing blow, I did not see,
hear, or feel anything more.
The men in the truck saw my body arch

backward, arms and legs outstretched, as the
force of the blow lifted me off the ground. I was
hurled backward through the air ten feet. They
saw my right shoulder hit the hard rocky earth
of the ridgetop. My body landed limply and lay
motionless, spread out on the ground.
"It got him!" Steve yelled.
Dwayne screamed: "Let's get out of
here!"
"Get this son of a bitch moving!" Allen
shrieked hysterically.
Mike did not need to be asked. He was
already desperately groping, fumbling around
for the ignition switch. His shaking fingers
finally seized the key. The engine roared to life.
Mike gunned the truck up the boulder-strewn
track. He frantically spun the steering wheel one
way, then the other, navigating the tortuous
road.
"Is it following us?" he yelled over his
shoulder. Nobody answered.
"Is it after us?" he shouted again.
When again no reply came, he turned to
see the looks of stupefied shock on the faces of
his crew. Their pale faces stared straight ahead,
blankly. In reaction to the unbelievable horror of
what they had witnessed, six hardened
woodsmen were reduced to mindless terror.
Mike was fearful that the saucer was
pursuing them. He put his head out the open
window to try to see behind and was stung in
the face by the sharp pine needles of a passing
limb. He kept hitting boulders and other
obstacles in his attempts to look behind. The
erratically vibrating rearview mirrors only
produced a blurred, flickering image, a faint
yellow glow in the blackness. Goaded by a
surge of terror, he stomped on the gas pedal.
The rattling truck shot forward at thirty-
five miles an hour — far too fast for the
condition of that road. A passing limb slammed
into the right rearview mirror, bending it
uselessly to the side of the truck. The old
International went flying through the air over
the dirt ramp of a high water-bar. As it landed,
the pickup smashed down destructively on its
weakened springs with a terrible crash.
The powerful jolt of metal on metal
brought Mike to his senses. He was gripped by
a sudden icy realization. If the truck broke
down, they would be stranded and at the mercy
of the unknown threat they were fleeing. He
slowed the truck down to ten miles an hour. He
was grateful to find the truck still working,
capable of carrying them away.

"It doesn't look like it's after us," Mike
shuddered as he shoved the gearshift into
reverse.
The pause broke the men out of their
shocked silence. They began to jabber
hysterically. Instead of continuing over the
obstacle, they sat there with the engine running.
They struggled to collect themselves and decide
what to do. Everyone was yelling at once, in a
confusion of high-pitched shouting.
Mike anxiously asked: "I saw him
falling back, but what happened to him?"
"Man, a blue ray just shot out of the
bottom of that thing and hit him all over! It just
seemed to engulf him." Ken's voice was solemn
with awe.
"Good hell! It looked like he
disintegrated!" Dwayne exclaimed.
"No, he was in one piece," Steve
contradicted. "I saw him hit the ground."
"I do know one thing. It sure looked like
he got hit by lightening or something!" Dwayne
returned. "I heard a zap — like as if he touched
a live wire!"
"Hey, men, we better go back!" someone
said.
"No way, man. I ain't going back there!"
said someone else.
As the men argued, Mike interjected.
"Let's build a fire so the guys who don't want to
go can stay here in the clearing while the rest of
us go back there."
Just as Mike was about to get the gas out
of the back, they were startled by the sudden
approach of headlights coming west on the Rim
Road. The dim outline of a camper-pickup
could be seen passing in the dark.
"Let's go catch that pickup and get
help!" John yelped excitedly.
Everyone piled in the right side of the
truck. As Mike went around the driver's side of
the truck, he exclaimed: "Look! Did you see
that?"
The men scrambled to look. One of the
men ran to the front of the pickup. "What was
it?" he asked.
Mike told them he thought he had
briefly seen the outline of the golden disc
through the trees to the south. It had raised itself
vertically to treetop level and streaked away
toward the northeast at incredible speed.
They got in the truck. Mike angled the
forgiving old pickup over the high water-bar
and pulled out onto the Rim Road, heading
west. The men argued on, rehashing what had
happened. They were still arguing a mile down
the road, where they reached the turnoff that
went north to Heber. There, they finally worked
their way around to the inevitable conclusion.
Mike turned the truck around at the
turnoff. He said firmly: "This truck is going
back. Anybody who doesn't want to come can
get out right here and now, and wait! We've
been acting like a bunch of cowards. We're all
scared, there's no denying that, but we've got to
do what we should've done in the first place!"
The embarrassed men no longer
protested returning to the site. Even if any were
still reluctant, they were ashamed to say so.
Also, the prospect of waiting alone at the turnoff
in the dark was much worse than going back
together.
Their courage had been reinforced by
the time and distance away from the site.
However, as they turned left, off the Rim Road
toward the original scene, their apprehension
began steadily to rebuild. They began
speculating on the dreadful possibilities of what
they might find when they returned. The nearer
they got, the more anxious they became.
"Hold it! It was right back there!" Ken
exclaimed.
Somebody suggested pulling the truck
around and pointing the headlights toward the
log pile above which they had seen the hovering
ship. They backed up and pulled in, driving over
the fir sapling leaning in the way. Their eyes
searched the area illuminated by headlights.
They found nothing.
"We're just going to have to get out and
look around," said Mike.
They searched first in the security of the
headlights. Everybody stayed together,
huddling close to Mike, who carried the only
flashlight. The flashlight beam probed into the
night, examining every dark shape. They
searched behind every log, bush, and stump.
They called repeatedly: "Travis! . . . TRAVIS!!"
Except for their calls, the woods were deathly
quiet. They searched farther north, as Allen had
suggested. They searched beyond the crest of
the ridge and farther south. They found no sign
anywhere — no foreign objects or unusual
markings. No burns, pad impressions, or
disturbed ground. Not a trace of tracks and no
evidence of a struggle.
The longer they continued, the more
worried Mike became, more overcome with
emotion. He stumbled, then stood, looking
down struggling to control his feelings. The loss
of his friend, his guilt at driving away, and the
pressure of the leadership being demanded of
him all became too much to bear for a moment.
Finally, Mike managed to regain his composure.
"Okay, you guys, we're not doing any good
here. Let's go!"
They got in the truck and began the long
drive back to Heber. The memory of what they
had so recently witnessed left them with a
spectrum of strong emotional reactions.
Then Ken voiced the one thought they
had all avoided so far. "We're gonna have to tell
the authorities about this."
"Ugnng . . ." I moaned silently. My first
glimmer of slowly returning consciousness
brought with it the single overpowering
sensation of pain.
"Oh, damn!" I gritted my teeth against
the agony. The excruciating ache almost caused
me to lose consciousness again. I felt badly
burned, all over, even inside me.
I was lying on my back. I didn't try to
move or even to open my eyes at first. I was
weak, so watery-weak, that I knew if I
attempted to move even my arm I'd lapse back
into unconsciousness. A bitter, metallic taste
covered my tongue. My mouth was dry and I
was very thirsty. Oddly, the weakness in my
muscles did not seem to come from hunger. The
trembling felt odd, like a strange mixture of
exertion and illness. Something was terribly
wrong.
I sluggishly dragged my eyelids open. I
could not see anything. Then a blurred image

began to coalesce. My eyes struggled against
the agony. My sight shifted in and out of focus.
My vision slowly became clearer. The hazy
scintillations of light gradually solidified into an
image. I could make out some kind of light
source above me.
The fixture was a luminous rectangle
about three feet by one and a half feet. The
diffused light came from the flat, frosted surface
of the rectangle. For an instant I could
distinguish the brushed metal luster of a ceiling
in the softer, reflected glow above the light. The
fixture seemed to be suspended lower and closer
to me than the ceiling. I deduced from the
nearness of the ceiling that the hard flat surface
I was lying on was a raised table of some kind.
What's the matter with my eyes? I asked
myself. The ceiling is all crooked. It's too small
on this end and too large on that end! Were my
eyes playing tricks on me? I closed them against
the discomfort, but soon opened them again to
ward off the feeling of vertigo that welled up in
me. The odd-shaped ceiling was indeed as I had
perceived it: generally triangular, with the base
toward my feet.
What a weird place! I reflected
wonderingly. I had been hurt. Yeah, that was it!
. . . But what? I could remember straightening
up and feeling as though somebody had
whacked me with a baseball bat.
Suddenly, the memory of what
happened before I'd blacked out came rushing
back with stunning impact. I remembered
standing in the clearing in the woods looking up
at the glowing saucer!
Where in hell am I? . . . Oh my God —
the hospital! They brought me here to the
hospital! I thought.
It was very hot and humid. The heavy air
was almost stifling. It smelled slightly stale and
muggy. I was sweating; warm moisture beaded
my temples. Feeling my jacket bunched up
under my arms, I wondered why a nurse had not
removed it. I still had all my work clothes on,
even my boots, and the jacket was just too
warm. I must be injured so bad there wasn't time
to take off my coat, I thought. Maybe I was in
an emergency room of some kind.
Then I felt something pressing down
lightly on my chest. It felt cool and smooth. I
looked down and managed to hold my eyes
open long enough to see that my shirt and jacket
were pushed up around my shoulders, exposing
my chest and abdomen. A strange device curved
across my body. It was about four or five inches
thick and I could feel that it extended from my
armpits to a few inches above my belt. It curved
down to the middle of each side of my rib cage.
It appeared to be made of shiny, dark gray metal
or plastic.
I looked past the upper edge of the
device. I could see the blurry figures of the
doctors, leaning over me with their white masks
and caps. They were wearing unusual, orange-
colored surgical gowns. I could not make out
their faces clearly.
Abruptly my vision cleared. The sudden
horror of what I saw rocked me as I realized that
I was definitely not in a hospital.
I was looking squarely into the face of a
horrible creature! It looked steadily back at me
with huge, luminous brown eyes the size of
quarters.

I looked frantically around me. There
were three of them! I struck out at the two on
my right, hitting one with the back of my arm,
knocking it into the other one. My swing was
more of a push than a blow, I was so weakened.
The one I touched felt soft through the cloth of
its garment. The muscles of its puny physique
yielded with a sponginess that was more like fat
than sinew. The creature was light and had
fallen back easily.
I lunged unsteadily to my feet and
staggered back against a utensil-arrayed bench
that followed the curve of one wall. I leaned
there heavily, keeping my eyes riveted on those
horrid entities.
My action had caused the device across
my chest to crash to the floor. No wires or tubes
connected it to me, or to anything else. It
rocked back and forth on its upper side. The
rocking sent shifting beams of greenish light
out onto the floor, from the underside of the
machine.
My aching body would not do what I
told it to. My legs felt too weak to hold me up.
I leaned heavily on the counter. The monstrous
trio of humanoids started toward me. Their
hands reached out at me.
With the superhuman effort of a
cornered animal, I ground out the strength to
defend myself. Fighting the splitting pain in my
skull, I grabbed for something from the bench
with which to fend them off. My hand seized on
a thin transparent cylinder about eighteen
inches long. It was too light to be an effective
club. I needed something sharp. I tried to break
the tip off the tube. I smashed the end of the
glasslike wand down on the waist-high metal
slab I had been lying on. It would not break.
I sprang into a fighting stance with my
legs spread wide to brace for the attack. I lashed
out with the weapon at the advancing creatures,
screaming desperate, hysterical threats. The
creatures slowed but continued toward me,
their hands outstretched.
"Keep back, damn you!" I shrieked
menacingly.
They halted. In a snarling crouch I held
the tube threateningly back behind my head. I
felt hopelessly trapped. I was surrounded, with
my back to the wall.
They stood still, mutely. They were a
little under five feet in height. They had a basic
humanoid form: two legs, two arms, hands with
five digits each, and a head with the normal
human arrangement of features. But beyond the
outline, any similarity to humans was
terrifyingly absent.
Their thin bones were covered with
white, marshmallowy-looking flesh. They had
on single-piece coverall-type suits made of soft,
swedelike material, orangish brown in color. I
could not see any grain in the material, such as
cloth has. In fact, their clothes did not appear
even to have any seams. I saw no buttons,
zippers, or snaps. They wore no belts. The loose
billowy garments were gathered at the wrists
and perhaps the ankles. They didn't have any
kind of raised collar at the neck. They wore
simple pinkish tan footwear. I could not make
out the details of their shoes, but they had very
small feet, about a size four by our measure.
When they extended their hands toward
me, I noticed they had no fingernails. Their
hands were small, delicate, without hair. Their
thin round fingers looked soft and unwrinkled.
Their smooth skin was so pale that it looked
chalky, like ivory.
Their bald heads were
disproportionately large for their puny bodies.
They had bulging, oversized craniums, a small
jaw structure, and an underdeveloped
appearance to their features that was almost
infantile. Their thin-lipped mouths were
narrow; I never saw them open. Lying close to
their heads on either side were tiny crinkled
lobes of ears. Their miniature rounded noses
had small oval nostrils.
The only facial feature that didn't appear
underdeveloped were those incredible eyes!
Those glistening orbs had brown irises twice the
size of those of a normal human eye's, nearly an
inch in diameter! The iris was so large that even
parts of the pupils were hidden by the lids,
giving the eyes a certain catlike appearance.
There was very little of the white part of the eye
showing. They had no lashes and no eyebrows.
With all the screaming and the hysterical
questions I had thrown at them, they never once
said anything to me. I did not hear them speak
to each other. Their mouths never made any
kind of sound or motion. The only sounds I
heard were those of movements, and my own
voice.
Just as I girded myself to spring at them,
they abruptly turned and scurried from the
room! They went out the open door, turned right
and disappeared. The anticlimax of their retreat
was incredible. The extra adrenaline that had
squirted into my bloodstream left me trembling
uncontrollably. I collapsed back against the
bench, struggling to slow my racing heart. I
gulped the heavy air in ragged gasps.
Afraid of the aliens' return, I looked
toward the door. No sign of anyone. I needed
something better to defend myself with. I
noticed an array of strange instruments lying on
the bench. The instruments were arranged near
the middle of the bench, leaving either end of it
clear. There was nothing I recognized, but some
of the chromelike objects reminded me of those
in a laboratory or doctor's office. All of the
objects were too small to be effective as
weapons. I was more afraid of being hurt by
some of those instruments. I touched nothing
more, throwing the clear tube I still held down
on the floor.
I've got to get out of here, I thought
frantically with a surge of determination.

There was a curving hallway about
three feet wide outside the door. The ceiling of
the hall gave off a faint, almost unnoticeable
illumination. I looked to the right down the
narrow, dimly lit passage in the direction the
aliens had run. There was no one in sight.
Seeing nothing in the passage to my left,
I began walking that way. I broke into a
frightened run down the narrow corridor. The
cramped hallway turned continuously in a tight
curve to the right. I dashed past an open
doorway on my left without looking in, only ten
feet down the hall from the door I had just
exited. I caught a glimpse of a room but was
afraid to stop.
Wait just a damn minute, Travis! I
struggled to get a grip on my self-control. What
if I missed a chance at that doorway to find a
way out of this place? I saw another doorway
ten more feet ahead on my right. I slowed down
to a walk as I neared it.
Maybe this would be my way out . . . .
The door was only a few feet ahead on
my right, on the inside curve of the hallway. I
slowed down, turned, and stopped in the
opening.
I looked in cautiously. I saw a round
room about sixteen feet across with a domed
ceiling about ten feet high. Equally spaced
around the room were three rectangular outlines
resembling closed doorways.
No one there. The room was totally
empty except for a single chair that faced away
from me.
I looked behind me. The hallway was
still empty. I slowly entered the room. I
hesitated to approach the high-backed chair.
There might be somebody sitting in it that I
could not see from behind.
I circled, keeping my distance from the
chair, checking to see if anyone was sitting it it.
I followed the curve of the wall to get around to
where I could see. I was ready to beat an instant
retreat if I should see one of those hideous
creatures again. I stopped every few steps to
crane my nieck over the back of the chair.
Seeing nobody, I continued around to where I
could ascertain, with much relief, that the chair
was unoccupied.
Glancing apprehensively toward the
open door, I slowly went toward the chair. As I
gradually approached it, a very curious thing
began to happen. The closer I got to it, the
darker the room became! Small points of light
became visible on, or through, the walls, even
the floor. I stepped back and the effect
diminished. I stepped forward and it increased
again, the points of light becoming brighter in
contrast to the darkening background. It was
like the stars coming into view in the evening,
only very much faster. The matte gray of the
metal wall just faded out to be replaced by the
glinting, speckled deep-black of space.
I looked at the controls on the chair. On
the left arm, there was a single short thick lever
with an oddly shaped molded handle atop some
dark brown material. On the right arm, there
was an illuminated, lime-green screen about
five inches square with a lot of black lines on it
that intersected each other at all angles.

I saw that the woman suddenly had an
object in her hand from out of nowhere — it
looked like one of those clear, soft plastic
oxygen masks, only there were no tubes
connected to it. The only thing attached to it was
a small black golfball-sized sphere.
She pressed the mask down over my
mouth and nose. I started to reach up to pull it
away. Before I could complete the motion, I
rapidly became weak. Everything started
turning gray. Then there was nothing at all but
black oblivion . . .
Consciousness returned to me on the
night I awoke to find myself on the cold
pavement west of Heber, Arizona. I was lying
on my stomach, my head on my right forearm.
Cold air brought me instantly awake. I looked
up in time to see a light turn off on the bottom
of a curved, gleaming hull. As I'd raised my
head up, a white light caught my eye just before
it blinked off. Either a light had been turned off
or a hatch had closed, cutting off the light from
inside. I only caught a glimpse as I raised my
head; I could not be sure which it was.
Then I saw the mirrored outline of a
rounded, silvery disc hovering four feet above
the paved surface of the road. It must have been
about forty feet in diameter because it extended
several feet off the left side of the road. It was
too large for the highway and it extended past
the roadside to my left to clear a cutaway rock
embankment on the other side of the highway. It
appeared to be about fourteen feet high in the
center.
For an instant it floated silently above
the road, a dozen yards away. I could see the
night sky, the surrounding trees, and the
highway center line reflected in the curving
mirror of its hull. I noticed a faint warmth
radiating onto my face. Then, abruptly, it shot
vertically into the sky, creating a strong breeze
that stirred the nearby pine boughs and rustled
the dry oak leaves that lay in the dry grass
beside the road. It gave off no light; and it was
almost instantly lost from sight.
The most striking thing about its
departure was its quietness. It seemed
impossible that something so large, moving
through the atmosphere at such speed, would
not have shrieked through the air, or even
broken the sound barrier with a sonic boom. Yet
it had been totally silent!
I scrambled shakily to my feet. My legs
felt rubbery. I swayed, then caught my balance.
I looked around and recognized the deserted
stretch of curving road as the highway that
wound down the canyon into Heber from the
west.
I ran wildly down the deserted highway,
across the bridge into Heber, stopping at the
new building across from the Union 76 service
station. No one answered my desperate
knocking. No cars passed by.
I ran down the highway, over the second
bridge, to the row of telephone booths at the
Exxon station. I dialed the operator — a dime
was not required to reach an operator in our part
of the country — and panted out the number of
my sister. She was the only nearby relative with
a telephone.
My brother-in-law Grant answered. It
was 12:05 A.M.
I was in an incredible mental state,
difficult to describe. As best I can remember, I
shouted something like: "They brought me
back!" Then I babbled, "I'm out here in Heber,
please get somebody to come and get me!" My
hand shook as I held the cold receiver.
Grant was not amused. He took this call
to be another cruel joke. "Uh, I think you have
the wrong number," he replied sarcastically,
starting to hang up.
"Wait! It's me, Travis!" I screamed
hysterically into the receiver.
"Where are you?" he asked, still
suspicious of a joke.
"I'm at the Heber Exxon station."
"Okay," he replied, almost
apologetically, yet still cautious of a prank.
"Stay right there. I'll come and get you. Just
hang on."
Grant drove the three miles from Taylor
over to Snowflake and found my brother Duane
at Mom's house. He told Duane about the call,
and of his doubts it was really me. Duane, too,
thought the call might have been yet another
example of someone's idiotic concept of humor.
But they decided they couldn't risk not
investigating. They set out for Heber, thirty-
three miles away.
Lights suddenly shone into the phone
booth. Relief flooded over me when I raised my
head and saw the headlights of Duane's pickup.
Duane and Grant got out and came to where I
was still slumped in the phone booth. Duane
opened the glass door of the booth and helped
me to my feet.
"Am I ever glad to see you!" Grant said.
Duane helped me into the warm truck
and asked Grant to drive. On the way to
Snowflake I tried to tell them about what
happened to me, but I just couldn't get it all out.
"They were awful — white skin — great big
eyes . . ." I sobbed in horror.

"Take it easy, Travis, you're all right
now. They didn't harm you, did they?"
"No . . . but those eyes, those horrible
eyes! They just kept looking at me!"
"Just so you're okay, that's all that
counts," Duane said. "Everyone has been
worried sick about you."
"If it's already after midnight, I must
have been unconscious for a couple of hours," I
replied shakily. "Because I only remember
about an hour or an hour and a half inside that
thing."
Duane and Grant looked at me strangely.
"Travis, feel your face," Duane said.
"Good hell, I just shaved this morning
and it feels like a week's growth!" I exclaimed,
still not comprehending.
"Travis," Duane said gently, "you've
been missing for five days!" []

Travis Walton (born April 23 1957) is an
American logger who claims to have been
abducted by a UFO on November 5, 1975,
while working with a logging crew in the
Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona.
Walton could not be found, but reappeared after
five days of intensive searches.
The Walton case received considerable
mainstream publicity and remains one of the
best-known instances of alleged alien

Decoding The Hidden Ruins
Of Southern Africa.
Scholars have told us that the first civilisation
on Earth emerged in a land called Sumer some
6000 years ago. Recent archaeological
findings suggest that the Sumerians may have
inherited some of their knowledge from an
earlier civilisation that emerged many
thousands of years earlier in southern Africa -
the cradle of humankind.
More than 100,000 years ago early
humans built a stone calendar that predates all
other man-made structures found to
date. This discovery is so astounding
that it requires a true paradigm shift in
our approach to ancient human
activity as it takes us closer to the
emergence of the earliest humans on
planet Earth.
This 'African Stonehenge'
which we have called 'Adam's
Calendar' has for the first time created
a link to the countless other stone
ruins in southern Africa and suggests
that these ruins are much older than
we thought. The complex that links
Waterval Boven, Machadodorp,
Carolina and Dullstroom, covers an
area larger then modern-day
Johannesburg and has emerged as the
largest and most mysterious ancient
city on Earth. The discovery of carved
dolerite statues of giant birds, some resembling
Horus, and petroglyphs of winged disks,
suggests that the prototype Sumerian and
Egyptian civilisations had their origins in
southern Africa thousands of years before they
emerged in the north.
Seven years of research by a group of
independent scientists and explorers has
delivered what may be the crucial missing
elements in our understanding of the lives and
development of early modern humans. Their
discovery has been released in a book called
Adam's Calendar. But the research has also
shown that these stone settlements represent the
most mysterious and misunderstood structures
found to date. It points to a civilisation that lived
and dug for gold in this part of the world for
thousands of years. And if this is in fact the
cradle of humankind, we may be looking at the
activities of the oldest civilisation on Earth.
Johan Heine manages the largest group
of fire fighters and fire fighting fleet of aircraft
in Africa. As a pilot he has been flying over the
mountains of Mpumalanga for over 20 years.
He instantly took a keen interest and started
photographing thousands of strange circular
stone ruins that lie scattered throughout this
region. After consulting various so-called
experts on their origins he was informed that
these were merely remains of "cattle kraal" left
behind by the migrating Bantu people from the
north in the 14th century until about the 18th
century. But it was an almost fatal air crash by
one of his crew that brought him to discover the
mysterious monolithic circle we now call
Adam's Calendar and put the entire mystery of
these ancient ruins into perspective.
Johan spotted the strange monoliths
standing upright in the centre of a larger eroded
circular structure, right on the edge of a high
mountain cliff. After dealing with the crashed
aircraft and recovering the pilot who only
suffered a broken arm, Johan returned to
investigate the monoliths. This is when he truly
discovered how amazingly blind, 'those who
will not see' can be. He brought about 5
academics to the site in search of explanations,
but not one of them could see the true
significance of the discovery, claiming that
these were just random stones. This was a big
blow to his original excitement but like a true
explorer he did not stop there.
The site is situated on the edge of what
is known as the Transvaal Escarpment which is
geologically black reef quartzite, rich in gold.
This is incidentally where the gold rush took
place in the early 1800's. But the monoliths at
Adam's Calendar are all dolerite. The closest
vein of dolerite to the site is about a kilometre
away. This means that the architects went to a
lot of trouble to get the monoliths, some of
which weigh over 5 tons, to the site. The central
monolith is carved with precision to allow the
setting sun to cast a shadow on what we call the
flat calendar stone.
Johan began to measure and calculate
the layout and parameters of the monoliths.
Using his years of experience in aeronautical
science and navigation he very quickly realised
that the circular structure was purposefully
designed and aligned to the cardinal points of
Earth, including equinoxes and solstices.
But it was only six years later and many

discoveries on every trip to the mountain top,
that the site was accurately surveyed and the
true age of the monoliths was revealed. It turned
out that the north, south east, west alignment is
out by 3 degrees - 17 minutes - 43 sec. This
means that we are dealing with a structure at
least 25,000 years old based on
archaeoastronomic calculations relating to the
26,000 year cycle of the precessional wobble.
Further studies of the geology, erosion,
alignments with stars and lichen growth has
allowed us to reach reasonable sound and
scientific conclusion that this site is at least
75,000 years old. Our latest research has pushed
back this date to well over 100,000 years.
Mysterious ancient ruins of southern
Africa
It is generally estimated by scholars that
there are about 20,000 ancient stone ruins
scattered throughout the mountains of southern
Africa. Modern historians have been
speculating about the origins of these ruins,
often calling them 'cattle kraal of little historic
importance'. The truth of the matter is that
closer scientific inspection paints a completely
different and astonishing new picture about the
ancient history of these stone ruins of southern
Africa. The scientific reality is that we actually
know very little about these spectacular ancient
ruins and it is a great tragedy that thousands
have already been destroyed through sheer
ignorance by forestry, farmers and
development.
After my personal explorations
on foot and by air over the past 2
years, I can confidently estimate the
number of ancient stone ruins to be
closer to 100,000. This figure was
confirmed by Prof. Revil Mason in
January 2009.
Population Problem
This immediately poses a huge
problem for archaeologists,
anthropologists and historians
because the accepted history of this
part of the planet does not at any time
in our past place anywhere nearly
enough people here to have built this
number of structures. It gets even
more complex when you realise that
these were not just isolated structures left
behind by migrating hunter-gatherers. The true
reality hits you when you take in the magnitude
and expanse of these settlements and witness
the staggering number of ancient terraces that
surround these settlements that cover over
450,000 square kilometres in southern Africa
and possibly much more. A detailed
archaeological scrutiny of photographic
evidence of some of these terraces shows some
to be at least 5000 years old.
The complex that links Waterval Boven,
Machadodorp, Carolina and Dullstroom, covers
around 20,000 square kilometres, which is a
larger area then modern-day Johannesburg.

Most of the original settlement
structures are well buried beneath the soil and
can only be seen from the air by a sensitised
observer. It gets even more confusing when you
observe the ancient roads that link all these
settlements together. We have traced the
remains of these roads that can still be seen
stretching to about 500 kilometres. In their
original state they would have covered
thousands of kilometres.
The position of the ancient road sections
that we have discovered suggest that it once ran
continuously from the coast of Mozambique to
Botswana and possibly beyond. A rough
calculation shows that, only the visible pieces of
the original ancient roads would have required
over 500 million stones of between 10 and 50
kilograms to construct. If we assume that the
roads only make up 2 percent of the ancient
settlements, the number of stones required to
build the entire ancient city/settlement becomes
unthinkable. This would simply not be possible
with the current population model of ancient
civilisation in southern Africa. The other issue
we need to deal with is the need for roads, since
it was previously believed that the wheel only
arrived in this part of the world with the
Portuguese explorers in the 1500's.
Oldest City on Earth
It would not be unthinkable that we are
possibly looking at the oldest settlements on
Earth. Artefacts that have been recovered from
these ruins show a long and extended period of
settlement that spans well over 200,000 years.
Over the past three decades several researchers
have raised this issue only to be ridiculed and
often ostracised. Many leading scientist and
historians have since voiced their support for
such ancient origins. Since southern Africa is
the cradle of humankind, we should not be
surprised to find such ruins, but we should
rather expect these discoveries. The reality
seems to be that we are dealing with what is
possibly the largest and most mysterious ancient
civilisation on Earth.
Ancient Gold Fields
It is important to note that the
mysterious ruins of southern Africa, which
include Great Zimbabwe and thousands of
similar ruins in that country, also extend into
neighbouring areas like Botswana, Namibia,
Zambia, Kenya and Mozambique. But why
were these ancient people here in the first place?
What were they doing?
The past 200 years has seen a number of
explorers write in great detail about these ruins,
but their findings have been largely forgotten
and their books are out of print. Most of these
early explorers write about thousands of ancient
mine shafts found in close proximity to these
ruins. In fact, most of these mines have been
described as gold mines, copper, tin and iron
mines. In my personal experience and research
I have found at least 5 ancient mine shafts in
gold-rich areas and been told of dozens more by
farmers from the area. It seems that gold mining
has been going on here for a lot longer than
most of us ever imagined.
A coin of Roman Emperor Antoninus
Pius 138 AD was found 25 metres deep in a
gold mine in 1891 by the man to first excavate
Great Zimbabwe. The Egyptian Pharaoh
Ramses writes about crossing the African
continent to the southern tip around 1300 BC
and his encounters with gold in this part of the
world. It becomes evident that we are actually
and probably talking about King Solomon's
mines.
Should we be surprised by this
discovery? The oldest written record of human
history, the Sumerian tablets, describe
extensively the ancient activity in a land called
ABZU - the land below the equator where the
gold was mined. The tablets describe the early
human settlements and the quest for gold. The
fact that many scholars keep ignoring these
scripts is a great pity.
Sumeria and Abantu
The links to the Sumerian civilisation in
southern Africa simply cannot be ignored or
erased. They can even be traced with etymology
in the names and origins of indigenous people.
The most obvious piece of evidence that has
never been explained is the word Abantu, the
name commonly used to desribe black South
Africans. According to pre-eminent shaman and
medicine man Credo Mutwa, the name is
derived from the Sumerian goddess Antu.
Abantu simply means the children or people of
Antu.
How does Adam's Calendar fit into
the ancient ruin picture?
Adam's Calendar is the flagship among
these ruins because we can date this monolithic
calendar with relative certainty to at least
75,000 years of age based on a number of
scientific evaluations. In turn Adam's Calendar
points to the diverse ancient history of southern
Africa and presents the first tangible evidence
of the earliest humans in the 'Cradle of
humankind'.
The Orion Connection & The Hawk
Head of Horus
This remarkable stone structure of
Adam's Calendar was originally a large circular
structure resembling but predating Stonehenge
by many thousands of years. Its original shape
is still clearly visible from satellite images.
Adam's Calendar is built along the same 31
degree longitudinal line as Great Zimbabwe and
the Great Pyramid of Giza. Three of the
monoliths are aligned with the rise of Orion's
belt when it rose horizontally on the horizon at
least 75,000 years ago. The latest astronomic
calculation suggests that the last time Orion
would have been flat on the horizon was around
160,000 years ago.
A recent observation is that the fallen
monolith on the outer circle that marks the
vernal equinox sunrise is shaped like the Horus
hawk head from Egypt and it also resembles the
birds at Zimbabwe ruins. This is the oldest
statue of the Horus hawk by a long shot and
should attract great interest in the years to come.
Adam's Calendar takes us further back in time
closer to the emergence of Homo sapiens, than
any other structure ever found to date, and it
will force historians and archaeologist to
reconsider ancient human activity and
consciousness.
Ancient Humans
Southern Africa holds some of the deepest
mysteries in all of human history. Although
much has been written about the first humans
who appeared in this part of the world, we have
found very little evidence of their activity or
what they did and what kind of lives they led
from around 250,000 years ago to 75,000 years
ago. What we are told is that around 60,000
years ago the people from Africa began to
migrate north and eventually populated the
whole planet.
Who were these first humans?
What did they do?
How did they live?
And where did they disappear to?
The first signs of human intelligence and
consciousness only appeared around 75 000
years ago, when the Khoisan people of southern
Africa started leaving behind an array of
spectacular cave paintings all over this part of
the continent. Finely crafted beads and bracelet
fragments found in a cave at Blombos in the
Western Cape, South Africa, show that these
early humans had already developed a feel for
the arts and crafts.
The legends become even more vivid
when we learn about the great empire of
Monomotapa whose kings were powerful and
wealthy in gold. When we move to around 1000
BC we encounter the mysterious Queen Sheba
who ruled a kingdom in the lost land of Ophir,
teeming with endless supplies of gold; and the
wise and wealthy king Solomon who seduced
Queen Sheba and obtained all his gold from her.
Is it possible that there really was
such a place?
Was it really filled with limitless
wealth in gold?
Was it here where the wealthiest
kings on Earth got their gold?
Ophir is an etymological derivative of the
ancient place called Afer - where the gold came
from; then became the Arabic Afir - for Africa -
from which was derived K'Afir - which became
the slang word for black people in later years. In
the Bible it is changed to Ofir or Ophir. There
seems to be a clear link between all these places
and this link leads to southern Africa - where the
gold came from.

This is after all the place where most of the gold in the
world has been mined in modern history, and it was no different
in ancient times. Is it a coincidence that the richest gold mine in
the world today, Sheba Gold Mine, is located right here in
Mpumalanga, South Africa? These may seem like naïve
questions to some, but after witnessing the enormous ancient
cities and civilisations in southern Africa myself, I am convinced
that what we think we know about our ancient human history is
further from the truth than we ever imagined. It is also important
to note that the word 'Ophir' stems from the ancient near-eastern
name for Africa which was 'Afir' or 'Aphir'. This later led to the
people of Africa being referred to as "K'Afir" and we all know
where this expression led to.
Adam's Calendar firmly places the many ancient ruins of
southern Africa at a point in history that we modern humans have
never faced before some 100,000 ago.

moving within the entertainment circles performing on stage and
screen. He started his career in Nick Taylor’s musical “Christian” at
His Majesty’s theatre in 1980 and followed this by playing the part
of “Joseph” at the opening of the State Theatre. At this time he
launched his solo career as a musician and released his first single
called “Hazel” in 1981, which was nominated for a SARIE award.
In 1982 Michael teamed up with Russell Stirling and formed the
musical duo “Stirling & Tellinger”. The two played together for
four years and had a number of radio hits with “Call Me” and
“What’s a Nice Girl Like You, Doing In a Place Like This” Their
videos took the market by storm and laid the foundation for many
of the SA music videos of the early 80’s. The “Call Me” video was
voted among the top two most popular videos at MIDEM in Cannes
1984.
In 1985 the duo recorded an album in Nashville, under the
guidance of Terry Dempsey. During a year in Los Angeles he
attracted the attention of various agents but because of the cultural
boycott against white South African musicians, the duo was bluntly
rejected. Michael worked for Cannon Films as a sound designer and
editor, returning to SA in mid 1986, when he recorded the
controversial anti-apartheid song “We come from Johannesburg”

and produced with Verny Scholtz of Just Ginger fame. The song and
video featured a host of leading SA artists like Malaika, Dr. Victor,
Watershed, Dawnay and others.
In 2000 he was given his own weekly radio show on Cape
Talk radio that dealt with science, innovation, technology and
success stories. In 2001 Michael developed an educational TV show
for the SABC which resulted in him staring a publishing company,
writing a number of children’s educational story books, developing

When doing any research, and particularly
the 1947 Roswell Incident, its always exciting
when a new witness comes forward or other
information not previously uncovered is found. I
suppose that's what keeps some of us "digging"
into the events surrounding the incident that
happened 62 years ago. Many have given up, or
moved on from researching the Roswell Incident,
however in my case and for several other
researchers, we're not yet convinced that all the
information has been brought to the table. After
all, the 4 different excuses given thus far do not
satisfactorily answer the many questions raised
over time about what happened on the Foster
ranch northwest of Roswell in 1947.
First and second-hand witnesses are dying
at an alarming rate, due to now being in their 80's,
if still alive, so when a new witness is discovered,
it's critical to obtain as much information as
possible and attempt to verify that information.
Such was the case at this years Roswell UFO
Festival July 2-5, 2009, when I was introduced to
an 85 year old gentleman that "claimed" he was on
the airplane that transferred the debris from
Roswell to General Ramey's office in Fort Worth
Texas. He indicated that Intelligence Officer
Major Jesse Marcel, military police and several
wooden crates were on that same flight and was
anxious to meet Major Marcel's son Jesse Jr., who
I was able to introduce him to. Other researchers
have interviewed him and perhaps this adds more
validity to the accounts we've been hearing for
years.
Another group is in the process of testing
some material obtained from the Foster ranch
during a dig that was done there several years ago,
with the University of New Mexico Archeological
group. If the material being tested should turn out
to be of unknown origin, it would simply add
more validity to the ongoing research being done
about the Roswell Incident, proving again that the
material recovered was not a weather balloon,
Mogul balloon, or crash test dummies as we've
been told on three separate occasions by the Air
Force to explain Roswell.
That leaves us with the first excuse that
Lt. Walter Haut wrote July 8, 1947 for media
distribution as the Public Relations Officer at
Roswell Army Airfield, under orders of the base
commander Col. William Blanchard.
By now everyone interested in the
Roswell Incident is familiar with the Roswell
Daily Record newspaper headline written by Haut
stating:
"RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in
Roswell Region"
This headline was not only printed in the
afternoon edition of the Roswell Daily Record,
but was also a major headline in many afternoon
newspapers west of Chicago July 8, 1947.
By the next day, (July 9, 1947), General
Ramey and many others in charge of a cover-up
story had the following headline ready for the
afternoon Roswell Daily Record and most
morning newspapers east of Chicago, which read:
“Gen. Ramey Empties Roswell Saucer"
General Ramey's headline indicated that
the "elite" 509th bomb wing stationed at Roswell
Army Airfield had misidentified a weather
balloon for a flying saucer.
For all the years that I've been doing
Roswell research I have known that there were
two newspapers in Roswell in 1947, (The Roswell
Daily Record and The Roswell Morning
Dispatch), and two radio stations (KGFL and
KSWS), that Lt. Walter Haut had contacted to
release the original press release he had written. I
had never seen a copy of the "The Roswell
Morning Dispatch", so I began a search of several
local archives to try and locate it, which included
the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico
Archives, the Roswell Public Library, The Chaves
County Court House and the Roswell Daily
Record newspaper, which has become the only
newspaper in Roswell, changing from an
afternoon paper to the morning paper, as it
remains today. Those searches required a lot of
asking questions and looking through July 1947
microfilm. My search was finally successful when
almost by accident I located the July 9th, 1947
Roswell Morning Dispatch. Since the original
press release went out about noon on July 8th,
1947 I knew the Morning Dispatch wouldn't have
anything for July 8th and I limited my search to

the following day July 9th, when the cover up was
already in place. The Roswell Morning Dispatch
headline was two lines:
"Army Debunks Roswell Flying Disk
As World Simmers With Excitement"
In a "sub-title" on the front page was
another smaller headline that stated:
"Officers Say Disk Is Weather Balloon"
I thought it was interesting that the word
"Disc" was spelled "Disk" in the Morning
Dispatch article. Perhaps other researchers had
previously found a copy of the July 9, 1947
"Roswell Morning Dispatch", but I had never seen
it, so it was exciting for me to personally discover
it. Some of the other headline stories on the front
page included a photo of Sheriff Wilcox with a
headline of:
"Flying Disk Transforms Sheriff's Office to
International Newsroom"
and
"Object Found on Foster ranch causes
excitement"
Both of these articles were large enough
that they were continued on page 8 of the July 9th
newspaper. The Roswell Morning Dispatch had
other disc articles through the July 11th editions
continuing the follow-up, including one with a
photo of Kenneth Arnold.
The microfilm machine I used to make
copies of the Morning Dispatch articles was only
able to copy on 8 ½" x 11" paper, so to get a full
size print I had to tape individual sheets together,
however I'm hopeful that I can find a way to get a
full size copy of the front page done in the future,
to preserve it.
It appears that the coverage of what
happened near Roswell in 1947 was not only of
importance to the media here locally in Roswell,
but also across the country as indicated by the
many newspaper articles that have been
discovered covering both the initial report that we
have a flying saucer in our possession, and the
cover-up story the following day by General
Ramey that it was only a weather balloon.
For me the evidence continues to mount
that something of extreme importance happened
near Roswell in 1947, based not only on the
coverage it received in July 1947, but the
continuing efforts by many researchers during the
past 30 years with bits and pieces still coming
forward. My personal theory remains that what
ever was recovered on the Foster ranch, and
perhaps at other locations since, is still being back
engineered for the benefit of our military, and
until that technology (propulsion, guidance, etc) is
understood, neither the military or government
will admit to the event. []

rescue and search crews in the area sprung into
Mysterious UFO action and began searching the area using
Crashes Into the sophisticated sonars and underwater cameras to
try and figure out what the object was. Even
Ottawa River Monday helicopters from the Canadian Forces Base
(CFB) in nearby Trenton took part. On Tuesday
Night - July 27 2009 at 1:30pm, they discovered an object about 9
meters (30 feet) below the surface, but because
of currents and nearby rapids, sending divers
down would be extremely dangerous since they
would be instantly swept away by the currents.
The mystery? Authorities and residents
have no idea what this object laying at the
bottom of the river is. There are no planes
missing from the area, no other aircraft like
helicopters, etc. are missing. There is no derbis,
no oil slick and even space agencies that were
contacted said nothing disappeared from orbit.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ottawa police
Const. Alain Boucher said of the object they
found on the riverbed:
“The size and the shape doesn’t lead us
to believe it’s any piece of an airplane or
fuselage or anything like that. It could be a rock,

Sightings of unidentified flying objects
increase when public interest is aroused by
films and television programmes about aliens,
newly declassified files indicate.
There was a surge of UFO reports in
1996 when the Hollywood film Independence
Day was released and the television series The
X Files was growing in popularity.
Ministry of Defence files released by the
National Archives show that there were 609
“sightings” in 1996, compared with 117 in
1995. The MoD had its own department to
ensure that none of the reported UFOs was a
threat to national security.
In one case in 1995, two men told police
in Staffordshire that an alien figure with a
lemon-shaped head had come out of a spaceship
they had seen that was four houses high and
hovering over a field, telling them: “We want
you. Come with us.” The men gave police a
drawing of the craft resembling a flying saucer.
The files also contained drawings of other
supposed sightings.
A US spy plane may have been behind
other allegations made in 1993. More than 70
people, including police and military personnel,
reported UFOs in Devon, Cornwall, South
Wales and Shropshire early on March 31. Many
described a large, low-flying object which made
a humming sound.
A note to Sir Anthony Bagnall, then the
assistant chief of air staff, from Nick Pope, head
of the MoD’s UFO desk, said there was
evidence of an unidentified craft evading UK
defences.
He said he would not normally concern
Sir Anthony with UFO sightings but continued:
“You may wish to be aware of a recent
particularly unusual incidence of UFO sightings
over the UK, involving descriptions that match
some of the reported characterisations of the so-
called ‘Aurora’.”
The Aurora was the name given to a US
plane supposedly developed in secret “black”
programmes in the 1980s which was allegedly
capable of hypersonic flight, five times faster
than the speed of sound.
Mr Pope said yesterday: “There are
some fascinating cases here [in the released
files]and while we could explain 95 per cent of
the sightings, the rest were a genuine mystery.
We were particularly concerned by near misses
with aircraft and cases where UFOs were seen
close to military bases.” []

Similar to a mini-helicopter, the device
has four pairs of carbon-fibre rotor blades which
support a camera. An operator on the ground
controls the vehicle's flight using a hand-held
control panel with two joysticks.
The drone – which is based on military
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology –
feeds live images back to a screen on the control
unit, enabling the "pilot" to operate the machine
even when it is out of his or her sight.
Merseyside Police was the first force to
use the drones, launching them during a number
of crackdowns on gun and gang crime, as well
as against anti-social behaviour. The aerial
cameras have also previously been deployed to
deter crime at pop festivals. Yesterday was the
first time it was used at a demonstration.
Their capacity to provide extra video
evidence could prove useful to police forces
which face allegations about their public order
tactics, and about differing versions of major
events such as London's G20 protests in April.
A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said:
"A pilotless drone plane will be used to record
evidence at the Red, White and Blue festival.
"The drone, fitted with CCTV cameras,
will be used by a trained operator from the
manufacturing company. It will record any
incidents of disorder for evidence-gathering
purposes. The drone is similar to a small, model
aircraft."
The drone is about three feet in diameter
and can be configured to gather still images,
video, thermal images and night-vision pictures.
Unlike full-scale police helicopters it is virtually
inaudible.
Derbyshire Police is believed to have
rented the drone from another force for the day
at a cost of £500.
Police have been told to change the way
they control public protests after the G20
demonstrations saw the death of newspaper
seller Ian Tomlinson after he was pushed to the
ground by a police officer. Earlier this month it
emerged that a woman may have suffered a
miscarriage shortly after being manhandled by
officers at the G20 protests. []

suggests a record number of people in the

definitely seeing some unusual things," said
Chris Rutkowski, a Winnipeg-based "ufologist"
who has spent the past two decades studying
reports filed by more than 15,000 witnesses

The number of UFO sightings in Alberta
last year was the highest ever, with 157
residents spotting unusual celestial activities.
That doesn't surprise Rutkowski, who
believes a combination of factors, including the
ease with which people can report their
observations to UFO-themed websites, has
contributed to the uptick.
Flying saucers -- once the standard
mode of transport for alien life forms--have
apparently fallen out of vogue, with more
people characterizing their observations as a
fireball or mysterious blob.
"It's not egg-shaped, spherical or
triangular in shape, but something with
protrusions and the lights seem to change shape
as you're watching," said Rutkowski. "The

some ways."
Numerous sightings occurred in
Calgary, including one in December, in which
two people reportedly saw a yellow object
moving over the city at 11 a. m. It was small and

his spare time meticulously logging these sorts

for fear of being ridiculed but they're
increasingly comfortable sharing their stories,
said Moroney.
That could explain the recent spike in
the number of reported sightings --not just in
Alberta, but across the country, he noted.
There were 1,004 UFOs recorded in
Canada last year, compared with 141 in 1989.
"The public is demanding more open

In the tradition of American ghost
hunting an apparent tie exists between the civil
war and the nation’s most notorious hauntings.
Southern places and southern-born writers seem
to dominate the scene. Adam Keith comes from
this rich history with his birthplace, Louisville,
Kentucky situated squarely within its
geographic and cultural boundaries. A hobby
ghost hunter himself, Keith moved to
Lakewood late last year, doing his part to build
the pantheon of unique, venerable personalities
that give the 'Wood' its distinctive character.
Keith is an introverted man with a gentle, soft-
spoken sensibility. His care-free gate and
penchant for filtered cigars are characteristically
southern. As an ambassador of his birthplace,
Keith embodies that famously southern
hospitality. It’s not surprising that, given his
introversion, he has yet to explore Lakewood
beyond the Madison and Detroit Avenue
business districts. However, as an observant
southern man, he’s keenly aware of the
personality distinctions between the two
districts. According to Keith, “People are
friendlier on Detroit, they say ‘hi’ and smile…
not so much on Madison.” Though however
friendly Lakewoodites on the Detroit ley line
may strike him, in this regard the northern cities
do not come close to those of the south, that
place that beckons his heart’s return.
But his heart’s desire has drawn him to
Lakewood, his sweetheart’s home town. It was
love at first site, so to speak. Keith and his
girlfriend met online. It happened not through a
dating website or craigslist ad, but through a
chat room where the two shared common
interests. After several years of communication
he decided to relocate and shack up in
Lakewood’s Madison Village neighborhood
near Bela Dubby.
Growing up in Kentucky within the
cultural milieu of the modern south has been
formative to Keith’s perspective on life, people
and the realm of the supernatural. In his earlier
years he considered himself a non-believer in
the supernatural. As the years passed, Keith
became acquainted with the science of ghost
hunting through the oral traditions of
storytelling and eventually, its popularization
through mass media.
When asked what pivotal event captured
his interest in the supernatural Keith provided a
personal anecdote. “I was pretty much
traumatized by my grandmother when I was a
kid with horror movies. It started with [Stephen
King’s] “It,” she told me it was [about] Bozo the
clown to get me to watch it and after that, as I
grew older… I started getting into more horror
movies,” said Keith with a sarcastic smile. He
enjoyed receiving his grandmother’s trickery as
much as she enjoyed delivering it. Over time
this fascination with the supernatural through
mass media would mature into a passion for
ghost hunting that, as you will see, engendered
communal relationships and technical know-
how.
Keith’s initiation into lived supernatural
experience took place several years after the
passing of his grandfather. Returning home
from the late shift during his early twenties he
noticed light in his basement. Peering down the
stairwell he saw his grandfather, rocking in his
favorite chair. “After that something triggered
in my head… I know [the ghosts] are there and
I want to prove it,” said Keith of the life-
changing event.
In the following years Keith began
researching the science of ghost hunting. This
led him to the Louisville Ghost Hunters (LGH),
a local ghost hunting group. Keith’s
involvement with the LGH helped to shape his
organizational chops while initiating him into
the spirit of teamwork needed to complete a
successful investigation. With LGH he also
learned of the complex array of equipment
needed for the work.
Nearly a decade ago Keith spent time in
Illinois, where he finished high school before
returning to his beloved Louisville. He would
later return to Illinois and, with the knowledge
and experience gained from the LGH, assist his
brother in establishing of a paranormal group
there which is active to this day.
Today, a horror movie is hard-pressed to
scare Keith. Through the bonds of kinship he
has been desensitized by a bad Bozo and the
sight a deceased grandfather’s apparition.
Several years of ghost hunting experience have
added layers of strength to his mantel of
skepticism. Donning that mantel, Hollywood’s
most tech-savvy, “realistic” imaginations of the
supernatural strike him as humorous, at best.
A life of horror films, role playing
games, ghost hunting clubs, and personal
experience converged and rocked Keith’s
psyche into entertaining a new perspective on
the paranormal, that of the skeptical believer. As
a liberator of more backward, outdated
understandings of the ghostly world it’s no
surprise that Keith was born under the sign of
Aquarius. His personality bears deeply this
typological tendency toward rational, objective
thought.
For Keith, ghost hunting is a scientific
endeavor that has less to do with the self-scaring
made so popular with the Blair Witch Project
and subsequent reality television programs.

Authentic ghost hunting involves time and
patience, cold objectivity and scientific
exactitude. According to Keith, “Only one out
of one hundred cases will actually be real
haunts.”
Most alleged haunts end up being
projections or imaginations of the self
proclaimed victim, no more than symptoms of
their own psychosomatic condition powered by
imagination. Oftentimes the shadows causing
spine tingling terror are nothing more than the
dancing of reflected head lamps, the demented
sounds of voices merely machines or appliances
in need of a tune-up. It is the job of the ghost
hunter to disprove, to identify all mundane
causes, to separate the psyche of the victim
from the natural and supernatural histories and
realities of the place.
The research begins with an interview
of the witness followed by an historical audit
wherein the earliest records of the location are
unearthed. Keith looks for documentation of
deaths, burial grounds, or tragedies. After
preliminary investigations, the site is fitted with
EMP (electro-magnetic pulse), video and voice
recorders. Because in most cases spooks are
active at night, the equipment is set to record for
an entire evening. Reviewing this data is
painstaking. For the dedicated ghost hunter, the
details must be scoured with a fine tooth comb.
When the hunter is lucky enough to review that
rare one in one-hundred of cases which
involves a real haunt, the data can be mind
blowing and exhilarating. During his work with
the LGH, he captured Electronic Voice
Phenomena (EVP) (also known as ‘spirit talk’)
at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville.
According to Keith, Waverly Hills is an
abandoned Tuberculosis hospital and one of the
most haunted locations in the world.
While Keith has yet to dig in to the local
paranormal scene with actual hunts he has
founded the first Paranormal research group on
Cleveland’s west side. Dubbed Burning River
Paranormal, the group is now organizing online
and can be found at

Because skeptical ghost hunting is a tech and
manpower dependent operation of a scientific
order, the groups is not yet capitalized or large
enough to begin hunting locally. However,
Keith looks forward exploring the rich history
of Lakewood and the region.
Whether romantic love is sufficient to
persuade him into greater exploration of and
commitment to the community remains to be
seen. It is clear that Keith brings to Lakewood’s
Madison Village a unique personal history and
kindly personality that will only add to the
accruing positive developments in that
neighborhood and the community beyond. []

Her life-long study of the perplexing UFO
phenomenon was sparked by her own sighting
as a schoolgirl in Long Beach, California.
In the summer of 1945, shortly after
5:00 p.m., I was riding on a bus from downtown
Long Beach, California, toward my home about
two miles inland from the ocean. Traveling east
along State Street (now Pacific Coast Highway
101), out of the left-hand window of the bus I
saw a bright, unflickering, yellowish-white light
in the north-northeasterly sky.
As I stared at it, I realized it was more
than a point source but instead was a glowing,
roundish object that seemed solid and
stationary. It was not like anything I had ever
seen before. It was still broad daylight, being
summer at 34 degrees north latitude. I do not
remember the exact day or month, but it was
early in the summer, either very late June or
July. I was on annual vacation from school.
World War II was still raging in the
Pacific. The sky that day was very blue and
cloudless, a typical summer day before the days
of California smog, and Long Beach had been
swept that afternoon by the brisk south-
southwesterly breeze which daily came from the
Pacific Ocean. Because the glowing object was
stationary, it was plainly not a reflection off an
airplane. I quickly became quite curious about
it. It was definitely not an astronomical object,
either.
From an early age I was deep into
reading books, having been influenced in that
direction by my mother, who had been a school
teacher in Arizona before her marriage. By the
age of nine, I had read several books on
astronomy and (then theoretical) space travel. I
was well acquainted with ordinary celestial
phenomena and realized rather quickly that this
glowing object was not anything anyone would
ordinarily see in the sky.
The bus trip along State Street took
about 15 minutes, and I stared at the object most
of that time, being unaccompanied on the bus
and too shy (in those days) to ask questions of
strangers. I can only describe what I saw as a
bright, seemingly solid "blob" of light, with
fairly distinct edges. It was so very strange I
literally could not take my eyes off it. It seemed
very high above the Earth and in appearance
was more like a daytime Venus than anything
else I could think of. However, it was at least
two times as large and bright and much more
yellow in color. Besides, its position in the
north-northeast sky was entirely wrong for that
planet. (1)
I got off the bus at Cerritos Avenue and
walked backwards the half-block south to my
home in order to watch the object, which still
seemed motionless. Utterly intrigued, I watched
it from my front yard for several more minutes.
During this time I became aware that it was
moving very slowly toward the northwest,
apparently straight across my line of vision and
maintaining the approximate angle of 60
degrees elevation. Finally, convinced that it was
something that did not "belong" in the sky, I ran
into the house and got my mother, Mrs. William
(Aileen) McElroy, to come out and watch it with
me.
We gazed at it together for several
minutes. My far and near vision were both
excellent with no need for glasses, and my
mother, although she used reading glasses, had
excellent distance vision. She agreed that it was
indeed strange and unlike anything she'd ever
seen. She finally suggested that it might be
some kind of military device, perhaps a balloon
associated with coastal defenses.
At this stage of World War II, violent
fighting was still raging in the Pacific, and there
was information being released in the media
that the U.S. might be planning an invasion of
Japan itself in a final attempt to end the war.
Southern California had always been on the
alert, with blackouts and other security
measures since the beginning of that war,
December 7th, 1941.
Although Long Beach had always been
in an essentially strategic position, having a
major harbor and dry-dock associated with
wartime activities, and although I knew what
my mother meant by "a balloon associated with
coastal defenses" there had never been any
balloon defense systems around Long Beach. I
therefore thought it strange that my intelligent,
well-read mother would call the strange object
in the sky a "balloon," especially when it was
apparently so very high and isolated in the sky.
But Aileen McElroy was not the kind of mother
a schoolgirl would argue with!
I continued to watch the object while my
mother went into the house to finish preparing
dinner, for she expected my father to arrive
home soon from work. Sometime after 6 p.m.,
still in broad daylight, the object had moved 15
to 20 degrees straight across the northern sky
toward the north-northwest, always at an
elevation of approximately 60 degrees. I had
now been watching it close to an hour and a
half.
Suddenly, slowly-moving particles of
light began separating from the object. My
instantaneous thought was, "Maybe it is a
balloon and it's breaking up!" The "particles,"
however, did not fall toward the Earth, as one
would expect. Instead, they took slow,
deliberate paths out, up, and away from the
main object on both sides. They were numerous,
perhaps 15 or more, and each trajectory was
different from the others.
Each "particle" was about 20 to 30 times
smaller than the main object, and the main
object was in no way diminished in size by their
departure. Each of these smaller objects faded
from view as they reached a distance
approximately one-half a degree of arc from the
main orb. I had the impression that the smaller
objects could be seen only because they were
reflecting the light of the sun during the initial

I was awed by the activity associated
with the bright object and felt extreme fear, as
well. This fear came over me suddenly after I
watched the departure of the smaller particles
because, as puzzling as the main bright object
had been, the smaller objects were completely
inexplicable. Why did the departing pieces
behave as they did?
I rushed into my home and tried to get
my mother to come out and look at the object
again. I tried to tell her, stumbling over my
words, that "pieces are coming off the thing but
the pieces aren't acting as if gravity was acting
the right way on them." I didn't know much
about gravity; my education to that point wasn't
heavy on science, and my astronomical
knowledge was completely self-taught, but
"gravity" seemed essential to my explanation so
that my mother would have a good reason to
come out again to watch the object.
My mother, however, was absorbed in
cooking dinner; she refused to come out again
to watch. Although well educated, she was also
extremely practical, and a "strange occurrence"
wasn't as important to her as compared to
cooking dinner for her hardworking husband
and family. I could not force myself to go back
out into the yard alone to resume watching. This
fear was irrational, looking back on it, for the
activity in the sky plainly had nothing to do with
warfare or coastal defense, nor did it apparently
present any harm to humans far below.
Nevertheless, the fear stayed with me for
several hours.
To the best of my memory, about two
weeks later the first atomic bomb was detonated
over Hiroshima. I was fascinated with the initial
accounts about the A-bomb in the newspapers,
although I understood nothing of the technical
explanations given. But inexplicably, I felt the
identical sort of awe and fear while reading
about the atomic bomb as I had felt some days
earlier while watching the object. Why the two
separate events should produce identical
reactions was beyond my comprehension. But
the relief that the war was ending, and the fact
that our city of Long Beach would no longer be
in danger, swept many concerns from my mind.
Several years after the war's end, the
history of the atomic bomb was published in
various newspapers and popular magazines.
Although still not comprehending much about
it, I gradually realized that the initial
experimental atomic explosion near
Alamogordo, New Mexico, of which the
American public had been totally unaware, took
place in the same general time period that I saw
the strange object in the sky. Concurrent with
this slow realization, and after I had been active
as an adult in the UFO field for many years, I
began to speculate that the main brilliant object
and its particles resembled in many respects the
UFOs known as "carrier craft" (or to use a less
scientific term, "mother ships") with their
attendant smaller satellite disks (2).
It was then that I began to wonder if
what I had seen in early summer 1945 was a
huge surveillance ship, origin unknown, drawn
to this world by the initial experimental A-bomb
detonation that occurred shortly before
Hiroshima. Had "something"
"somewhere" been drawn to Earth by that initial
from
event, to survey and monitor a planet that had
just entered its atomic age?
I never forgot the 1945 occurrence. In
fact, it seems to have been the key that led me to
enter the UFO field as an investigator with
NICAP in 1957. By the mid-1980s, when other
researchers began to hypothesize that the debris
found near Roswell, New Mexico, may have
been from a Japanese "Fugo" balloon, I began to
speculate that perhaps the object I'd seen in
1945 had been a Fugo balloon also. These large,
free-flying balloons, as is now well known,
were released from Japan during World War II
and traveled in high wind streams toward the
American continent, a few landing as far east as
some Midwest states. Their purpose was not
only for propaganda; many carried explosive
devices.
The possibility that my 1945 sighting
might have been a Fugo balloon seemed highly
unlikely, for the winds which carried these blew
from west to east, or in a few instances made
wide, curving paths downward and then easterly
over the United States. These jet streams, as
they were later called, however, never traveled
east to west. The 1945 object viewed by my
mother and myself traveled in a straight path
from the northeast to the northwest.
If the object actually was high above the
atmosphere (and its appearance seemed to
justify this assumption), its angular speed was
such that it possibly was in a stationary orbit
above the Earth, with its apparent angular speed
caused by the Earth's rotation. It traveled 15 to
20 degrees in approximately an hour and a half.
In an attempt to recover the exact date of
my 1945 sighting, W.C. (Bill) McCall, M.D.,
conducted a hypnotic regression with me in
1977. Dr. McCall, who was active in UFO
research, had his practice in Anaheim,
California. Besides his medical expertise, he
had 20 years experience in clinical hypnosis.
The regression confirmed that the
general time span was the summer of 1945. I
was unable to retrieve the exact date but
recalled that it occurred "near the end of the
month, either June or July."
In view of my conscious memory that
the Hiroshima bombing occurred about two
weeks after the sighting, it seems logical to
think that the Long Beach sighting was made
during the last half of July. The date of the
Hiroshima bombing was August 6, 1945,
whereas the first experimental explosion over
New Mexico occurred at 5:30 a.m. on July 16,
1945.
Ever since realizing that my 1945
sighting was possibly an otherworldly "scout
craft," I searched through all available sources
of UFO literature for 1945 sightings that might
correlate with my own. I was totally
unsuccessful until the mid-1990s when I was
engaged in archiving the UFO files of the famed
atmospheric physicist, Dr. James E. McDonald.
From 1966 to 1971, McDonald courageously
and publicly researched UFO phenomena in a
scientific and persistent manner never before, or
since, shown by any other scientist.
While transcribing his four handwritten
journals in which he kept precise notes of his
endeavors in the UFO field, I found what might
have been a previously unrecorded 1945
sighting confided to McDonald by fellow
scientists. Many details of this remarkable
occurrence dovetail with my Long Beach
sighting and it is recorded in my forthcoming,
FIRESTORM! DR. JAMES E. McDONALD's
FIGHT FOR UFO SCIENCE (3).
During those five frenetic years from
1966 into 1971, McDonald spoke frequently
before prestigious scientific groups, in civilian,
military and governmental settings. His prestige
and perseverance impressed numerous other
scientists who had themselves viewed "UFOs"
but had never spoken or written about these
encounters due to the fear of being ostracized by
colleagues. They trusted McDonald, however,
and he justified their trust by keeping their
reports confidential, if requested, referring to
them only in private, handwritten journals.
In 1968 he gave a talk before a meeting
of the American Meteorological Society in
Washington, D.C., and afterwards went to a
gathering in a colleague's hotel suite. There he
met a German émigré scientist who was
working at a U.S. Army research lab. This
scientist trusted McDonald and described to him
a 1945 sighting that was witnessed by 20
German scientists who, at the end of World War
II in Europe, were fleeing from Russian
soldiers. They were on a ship anchored in a bay
near Schlesweig Holstein (northern Germany)
where they viewed, in broad daylight, a bright
object, "bigger than Venus", high in the sky.
Intrigued, the scientists watched the
object for 20 minutes during which it moved 30
degrees toward the east. In spite of viewing the
object through binoculars, none of the scientists
were able to identify it. It was neither a balloon
nor a plane and was never reported officially by
any of the witnesses. McDonald wrote in his
journal, "There was no explanation from any of
the highly trained scientists and technicians"
(4).
If the Long Beach sighting was evidence
that some type of otherworldly craft came to
survey and monitor the human race's entry into
the atomic age, the German scientists' sighting
might fit into such an hypothesis since victory
in the European theater of war came on May 6,
1945, just about three months before victory
over Japan.
My own investigations and research into
apparently physical UFO sightings, most
without reported presence of "occupants,"
continued from 1957 through 1975. In the mid-
1970s, however, most sighting reports involved
apparent alien abduction incidents that at the
time were assumed by most researchers to
involve a different phase of UFO surveillance.
Although I investigated abduction reports
initially under this same assumption, by the
1980s I had begun to suspect that visits by so-
called aliens conducting experiments on
humans might well be a separate phenomenon
from apparently physical UFOs, which are
viewed by witnesses in broad daylight and in
full waking consciousness, are caught on radar,
chased by military jet pilots and occasionally
photographed by reliable witnesses (5).

Since 1988 I have conducted continuous
research into various mental and physical
techniques which enable abductees and
experiencers to fend off visits from so-called
UFO alien abductors. Such visits generally take
place in altered states, and in many cases
experiencers can employ these simple defense
techniques, awaken fully, and abruptly end the
abduction scenarios (6).
The fact that about 25 percent of the
400-plus abductees in my database can free
themselves of the harassment of such creatures
(whatever they are) confirms and strengthens
my conviction that the UFO phenomenon is a
two-edged sword; one edge being that of
physical, unidentified craft and the other edge
another phenomenon, perhaps interdimensional,
which has been reported by all major cultures
throughout the millennia and invariably
described as deceptive, sexually harassing, or
mischievous. At present, at least in the Western
world, this persistent phenomenon seems to be
posing as occupants from physical UFOs for
reasons/motives not yet understood by the
human race (7).
In view of my 1945 sighting, the details
of which remain vivid in my mind to this day, I
remain convinced that some UFOs are physical

craft, possibly extra terrestrial, and that their
present purpose might be continual monitoring

speech doesn't mean you can make public death
threats to the president of the United States. The
Secret Service is investigating a man who held
a sign reading "Death to Obama" and "Death to
Michelle and her two stupid kids" outside a
town-hall meeting on health-care reform in
western Maryland. The 51-year-old man was
arrested near the entrance to Hagerstown
Community College after police got calls from
a number of people attending the meeting held
by Sen. Ben Cardin. President Obama was not
at the meeting. Police said there were no other
arrests among the nearly 1,000 people, some
carrying protest signs, who came to the college
for the meeting or demonstrated off-campus.
Dude -- okay we get it -- you don't like the
president. But threatening death on those two

Thanks But No Thanks You Boob!
The New Zealand Breast Cancer
Foundation has decided to politely decline a
$7500 pledge from the controversial "Boobs on
Bikes" parade. The annual parade is organized
by porn star Steve Crow who said he would
donate $5000 to the foundation if he could get
100 women to participate in next month's
topless parade and would add another $2500 if
100 men also took their tops off. But the
foundation said it would neither accept money
from the event nor endorse it. Crow said he was
shocked that the organization would refuse a
donation from a "perfectly legal and valid
source" and added, "What right do you, or
anyone else in your organization, have to turn
down funding much needed by the women of
this country?" So instead he's giving the money
to a United States-based organization that helps
women around the world who have suffered
genital mutilation. (New Zealand Herald)
Nuns To The Rescue
The police in Independence, Missouri,
have a couple of nuns to thank for helping nab a
gun-toting man suspected of burglarizing two
homes. One of the sisters glanced out a window
of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy
Eucharist convent and spotted a suspicious man
walking through a soybean field. She and
another nun headed outside to see if the man
was lost or hunting illegally. They saw he was
carrying a shotgun, boxing gloves and other
items and when they began to question him, he
ran into nearby woods. So the nuns gave chase
in their ankle-length habits and flip-flops. The
suspect got away but the sisters later gave a
description to police who found and arrested the
guy. (myway.com)
Divine Lotto Intervention?
Folks in Haslett, Michigan ,are
wondering if it's divine intervention or just blind
luck. Whatever it is, the Covenant Life Worship
Center and its 25 members are $70,000 richer
after winning one of the second prizes in the
Lucky 7's Michigan Lottery. The winning $10
ticket was purchased at a convenience store and
lottery officials say the church will receive the
full amount of the prize because it is a tax-
exempt group. Pastor Marilyn Parmelee says
supporting local community service projects.

Strange Time For a Dejà vu
In Salisbury, Massachusetts, 55-year-old
William Thomson brought coffee to a police
station to apologize for his rather violent arrest
12 years ago in 1997. But then, strangely
enough, the next day he was once again
violently arrested by the same department.
Seems police had stopped him for suspected
drunk driving and Thomson allegedly
threatened an officer, punched a Breathalyzer
machine and tried to flood his jail cell after
being locked up. We can only assume he'll be
back with more coffee and another apology in
2021. (Daily News of Newburyport)
Small Town Money Management!
Hey two bucks is two bucks right? In
Lincoln, Nebraska, during a recent county board
meeting, the council finally voted, 2-1, to
reimburse Shum Darwin for his pants after quite
a bit of debate and haggling. Apparently
Darwin's pants went missing at the local jail
after he was arrested. The funny part is that
everyone agreed that Darwin should be
reimbursed. The debate was over whether the
pants were worth $10 or $12. (Journal Star)
Probably Not The Best Way
In Glenrock, Wyoming, Police Chief
Tom Sweet admitted that two officers "probably
didn't do things the best way" when they used a
Taser on a 76-year-old man driving an antique
tractor in a parade. State investigator Tim Hill
has said the two officers contend Grose
disobeyed their orders and apparently decided
the best thing to do was tase the poor guy. Now
the public is screaming for the officers to be
fired. Witness Scott McWilliams, who was
shoved by the officers said, "Those two were
the most out-of-control officers I've ever seen in
my life. These two guys got to go." In the
meantime an investigation continues and the
two taser-happy officers are on paid leave.

Stop Harassing Me and My Hot,
Naked Wife!
In Gahanna, Ohio, police officer Ron
Fithen's wife Beth made it to Playboy magazine
and posed nude back in 2008. That little photo
shoot may turn out to be a gold mine for the
Fithens as Ron is now suing his own police
department, its two top administrators, and the
City of Gahanna, alleging they are responsible
for "a humiliating and intolerable working
environment." The Fithens want $3.5 million in
damages, plus attorney's fees and contend that
photo shoot lead to a "sham investigation" of
the entire Fithen family that "did not result in a
single criminal charge and caused the family
extreme emotional distress and
embarrassment." The suit says at one point,
Deputy Police Chief Ken Bell asked Officer
Fithen for a copy of the magazine his wife
appeared in, as well as her autograph. (NBC

I Just Needed Someone To Talk To!
In Frederick, Maryland, 20-year-old Bryan Paul
Blanchard told police he just needed someone to
talk to. And that's why he repeatedly called 911
from pay phones. But every time police would
arrive at the pay phone they would find Bryan
long gone and the phone left off the hook. They
finally caught him on surveillance video,
arrested him and he confessed. He'll now have
someone to talk to all the time -- a cell mate.
He's facing a maximum sentence of three years
in jail and/or a $500 fine for abusing the 911
system. Dude -- ever hear of a chat room? Or a
bar? (Frederick News Post)
Jump the Shark?
We've heard of jumping the shark but
this is crazy! In Haulover Beach, Florida,
Michael Powers and his friends were out on
their boat for a day of spear fishing and lobster
diving when they received a surprise visitor. A
five and a half foot bull shark jumped out of the
water and right into the boat! It then proceeded
to flop around violently until eventually injuring
itself. Powers said, "One minute it was in the
air, the next minute it was in the boat just
beating everything in God's creation." It took
about 30 minutes before the shark to settle down
and stop breaking things. At that point Powers
and his passengers got the shark out of the boat
by roping it from underneath, grabbing it's fins
and shoving it overboard and back into the

Have You Seen My Leg Yet?
In China, 48-year-old Song Weiguo has
a most unusual reminder of his drunk driving
accident. It's his own severed leg which he has
preserved in formaldehyde for 20 years to warn
people against the dangers of drinking and
driving. Song's left leg had to be amputated
after he hit a tractor while driving his motorbike
after drinking heavily back in 1989. He says,
"When the doctor told me my leg had to be
amputated, I cried a lot. Later I pleaded with
him to let me keep the severed leg. Every
August, he takes the leg out of its sealed tank
and invites friends and people he suspects of
drink driving to come and see it. Seems to be
effective. Song says, "It scares the hell out of
people and none of them ever drives after
drinking again." And he's claiming all the credit
for the fact that there has not been a single
drunk driving related accident in his home town

What Father Could Refuse?
Former president Bill Clinton just got an
interesting offer from 39-year-old Godwin
Chepkurgor, a former councilor from Nairobi.
He's offered Clinton 20 cows and 40 goats in
exchange for the hand of his daughter Chelsea
in marriage. It's apparently the second time
Godwin has made the offer. He first wrote to
Clinton back in 2000 but never received a reply.
His second bid to marry Chelsea came during a
recent visit to Kenya by her mother, Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton reportedly
promised to tell her daughter all about his
interest which he expressed as she was
addressing a public forum at the University of
Nairobi. Godwin is actually already married but
that's not a problem as polygamy is A-OK in
Kenya. We'll let you know if the Clintons decide
to take him up on his offer. (Ananova) []
