Wright State introduces fourth Center of Excellence

NIKKI FERRELL Staff Writer Monday, April 12, 2010 FAIRBORN Wright State introduced its fourth Ohio Center of Excellence Monday. The Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-Enabled Computing (Kno.e.sis) is led by Amit Sheth, Ph.D. and is expected to generate $13 million in research funding in five years and $19.5 million in 10 years, said Sheth. The center is home to 15 faculty and 45 graduate researchers who will work on what has been dubbed Web 3.0, a semantic web that will understand the meaning of the information of the 234 billion Web sites out there today, according to a press release. One example of such work is that of Meena Nagarajan, a doctoral student in Kno.e.sis who has developed a Web site, called Twitris, that tracks and analyzes Tweets from the popular social networking site Twitter. The Web site then organizes that data to show what users in a particular demographic or place are talking about.

Charles Caperton/Greene County Dailies Wright State University Chancellor Eric Fingerhut talks at the Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge meeting at the Wright State Student Union Monday.

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut said that Ohio Centers of Excellence generally generate $8 for the region from every $1 invested in a center. This is a really excellent project for the entire university system, said Fingerhut. Our goal is to build Centers of Excellence for which we are nationally known. The Center means jobs for the region, added Fingerhut, because of its link to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and local businesses. Dozens of companies work together to make a single machine, said Fingerhut. He added that he has high hopes for Dayton.

If anyone wants to become involved in the knowledge-enabled computing, you had better be here. You had better be in Dayton. This is the Silicon Valley of the 21st century right here in Dayton, said Fingerhut. This is the Research Triangle of the 21st century. The days events also included a panel discussion and presentations by top researchers from technology companies including LexisNexis, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.
