The ultrasound measuring technology works also when and if the target is not visible, as in completely or partially covered. The Vertex ultrasound is very useful when working in circular sample plots, and if the reference point (centre of plot) is covered by dense vegetation, trees or bushes. When measuring the angle to the reference point, the horizontal distance can be presented.
Working with factor gauges (relaskopes) or prism sometimes offers difficulties if the underbrush is too thick. Poor sighting will prevent a correct diameter evaluation. With the Vertex Laser instruments built in BAF function (Basal Area Function), the minimum tree diameter for trees to be included in the plot can be featured, when measuring the distance from the tree to the reference point/plot centre, using the Vertex ultrasound method. The Laser part of the VL402 instrument emits invisible, eye safe infrared energy pulses that reflect off the selected target back to its optical receiver. The laser is classified as Class 1 (USA and Canada) and as Class 3a (EC and other countries). By measuring the time it takes for each pulse to travel from the rangefinder, to the target and back with sophisticated precision charge circuitry, the instrument instantly calculates distances. The maximum range of the Laser measuring method depends on the targets reflectivity, its color, surface, finish, shape and size.

BATTERY INDICATOR
Battery power is low, image of battery is flashing and the battery should be replaced.
The battery power is also shown in the front display. The battery is exhausted and should be replaced when the battery symbol in the display shows empty. The Vertex Laser uses one CR 2 Lithium battery 3V. The battery is placed under the battery cap that can be opened with a coin. The transponder T3 uses one 1.5V alkaline battery. A battery will in normal cases last for weeks or even months. When frequently operating the Bluetooth function, the battery capacity is reduced and will last for less time.
Batterylid
BATTERY LIFE
A new battery should last to take about 3000 measurements at 20C/70F. Temperature and target shapes are examples of variables that can change the lifetime for batteries. The automatic, energy-saving turn-off function ensures the longest possible life for the battery. The automatic turn-off time is set to approximately 10 seconds for the laser and up to 60 seconds for the ultra sound.
Page 7
TRANSPONDER T3
A transponder T3 is (normally) included in the Vertex Laser system (art no 15-103-1009, 1009, see page 1). 1) The transponder is equipped with an ultrasonic transmitter and a receiver that communicates with the measuring instrument. The transponder can be used both for aimed/direct measuring and for circular measuring, when using the 360 degree adapter. To use the transponder to measure tree heights, remove it from the adapter/spreader /spreader and pin it to the tree stem to measure. The T3 Transponder is equipped with a beep signal, indicating ON or OFF status. The T3 T has ha no switch and the Vertex Laser is basically used as a remote control to turn off and on. When turned ned on, the Transponder stays active for app. 20 minutes. The transponder uses one alkaline 1,5 volt AA battery to operate, which is placed under the battery lid
ADAPTER
An adapter/spreader /spreader and a custom plot center staff can also be used in the Vertex ertex Laser system. The adapter allows the ultrasound signals to spread in a full 360 degree circle, which is useful for example when working in circular sample plot. Another optional nal accessory is a tripod rack and a custom holder, suitable when measuring thin objects and to obtain a steadier aim.
Page 8
ULTRASOUND
Together with the T3 transponder, ultrasound u can be used to measure the distance to a plot centre and to obtain sample plot radius. You can work with the BAF Basal Area Function to determine if a tree is to included in a sample plot study. Ultrasound allows the user to work also in dense forests which is a big advantage compared to other methods.
LASER
Laser can be used to measure tree heights, heights to determine hazard trees, to obtain delta height and to measure long range distances.
HEIGHTS
The Vertex Laser instrument offers different measuring methods for accurate height measuring:
ONE SHOT
The distance and the angle to an optional part of the object are measured with laser. To work with the one-shot method, the user has to be positioned on the same levelhorizontal level - as the bottom of the object to measure. measure Eye height -EYE.HGT - needs to be set in the settings menu.
Page 9
ANGLE
Angle measuring can be used to measure inclination in slopes.
HAZARD TREES
The Tree limit function is used to calculate hazard trees standing close to power lines, railroads, buildings etc. The Tree limit function will calculate and give an estimate of the risk that the tree can hit the power line or the road in case of breakage.
DELTA HEIGHT
The Delta Height Function is used to calculate the height difference of a point at an imagined straight line between two fixed positions, and an a third point, for example at a power line, where the line sag is closest to the ground. Delta height
Page 10
SETTINGS P.OFFSET
The Pivot Offset is the distance from the Vertex Laser instrument front to the virtual intersection point behind the instrument. The normal P.OFFSET is 0.3m/1.0ft. Pivot offset 0.3
TRP.HGT
The transponder height, the height or any other reference height equals the distance from the ground to a reference point. In most cases, the TRP.HGT .HGT would equal the centre of the T3 transponder or other visible reference point. If the reference point is the t ground, or the objects lowest point, TRP.HGT .HGT should be set at zero (0). TRP.HGT is always added to the height when measuring uring distance with ultrasound. TRP.HGT .HGT is not used when measuring with laser except when using the one-shot shot method. Then the reference referenc height (TRP.HGT) .HGT) should equal your eye height. Normal height to set the Transponder T3 is at 1.3m (breast height).
EYE.HGT
The eye height equals the distance from the ground to a reference point. EYE.HGT is used when measuring with laser using the one-shot method. The EYE.HGT should be set at the users actual eye height.
M.DIST
Setting a Manual Distance can be useful if a distance is already known (fixed distances between for example poles) or when neither Laser nor Ultrasound can be used for distance distance measuring for certain reasons r if, for example, large objects cover the target object. NOTE! The accuracy of a manually entered distance M.DIST affects the accuracy of height measuring results! results
BAF
Working with relaskopes or prisms can sometimes offer difficulties when in the forest some trees cover others. Poor oor sighting can prevent a correct diameter measuring. With the Vertex Laser built in BAF function, the minimum tree diameter for trees to be included in the plot can be featured. To use, measure the distance from the tree to the reference point, using the ultrasound ltrasound method. The result will be minimum diameter a tree must have to be included in the plot, based on the pre-set BAF-factors. factors.

When the number 10.00 appears in the display, the instrument is ready and calibrated. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR SENS IS GIVEN ENOUGH TIME IME TO CORRECTLY DETERMINE THE AMBIENT T TEMPERATURE. IF YOU YO ARE CARRYING THE INSTRUMENT NSTRUMENT IN YOUR POCKET YOU MIGHT HAVE TO ALLOW UP TO 10 MINUTES MI BEFORE YOU CAN OBTAIN BEST ACCURACY An example: Your inner pocket holds +15C/60F. Outdoor air temperature is -5C/23F. 5C/23F. The measurement result will show 10,40m/34.12Ft and not the correct 10,00m/32.81Ft. The measurement asurement inaccuracy pending on temperature is approximately 2 cm/C. The error will decrease rapidly, but the final accuracy might take up to 10 minutes to achieve. Taking this into account, calibrating the instrument before the sensor has had time to stabilize stabilize will make the error permanent. The display will then show the correct 30.0ft for a short while, but a few minutes later the measurements will be inaccurate. NEVER CALIBRATE YOUR INSTRUMENT BEFORE IT HAS STABILIZED AT AMBIENT BIENT TEMPERATURE!!
Page 14
The Vertex Laser instrument indicates with a short signal when a measuring result has been completed. The display features SD: distance, HD: horizontal distance, H: height above horizontal plane (EYE.HGT included) and DEG: angle. Press both MODE and SHIFT buttons to step out of a menu and to turn the Vertex Laser OFF.
SD HD H DEG
Use EYE.HGTp sidan 12) to add the distance from ground to eye to get the targets total height from the ground to the measuring point. P. OFFSET should be set to 0.1 m/0.3 ft OBJECTS THAT ARE FAR AWAY OR THIN (POWER LINES) CAN BE DIFFICULT TO VISUALIZE AND TO OBTAIN MEASURING RESULTS FROM. WITH THE LASER SCANNING FUNCTION, ACTIVATED WHEN PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON, THE BEST MEASURING RESULT CAN BE ACHIEVED. PRESS AND KEEP POWER DEPRESSED UNTIL A BEEP SIGNAL INDICATES THAT A RESULT HAS BEEN MEASURED AND IS FEATURED IN THE DISPLAY. WHEN PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON, THE VERTEX LASER SEARCHES FOR THE CORRECT ANGLE TO THE MEASURING OBJECT. ONCE THIS IS OBTAINED, THIS SIGNAL IS GIVEN AND THE HEIGHT IS CALCULATED AND DISPLAYED. THIS IMPLIES THAT YOU NEED TO AWAIT THE SIGNAL TO GO OFF TO GET THE HORIZONTAL DISTANCE AND TO GET ACCURATE RESULTS.

To measure a distance just press SHIFT and the distance are presented in the display.
Ultrasonic pulses are attenuated differently with varying temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. In open terrain without obstacles between the instrument and with the 60 transponder, a range of 30m/100 ft or more can be obtained. Calibration of f the ultrasound should be made in current correct temperature to get highest possible precision. The speed of sound in air depends on several factors, but primarily on temperature. A built-in in sensor is automatically compensating for changes in temperature. e. The instrument has a default calibration that will typically result in a distance error less than 1%. To obtain best accuracy it is recommended, however, to check and if necessary recalibrate the instrument at regular intervals -e.g. e.g. once a day. For details etails on the calibration procedure, please see Calibration of Ultrasound in this manual.

COMMUNICATION BLUETOOTH
This part of the manual is only valid for instruments containing Bluetooth function. In some cases, the Bluetooth function has been disabled due to local restrictions. Please consult your Haglf Sweden distributor for details. The Vertex Laser instrument has built in Bluetooth. The Vertex Laser can send data wireless to handheld computers or PC, using this Bluetooth function. The setup is made with the Vertex Laser instrument set in slave mode. Certain computer devices will ask to activate a pin code before making the connection. The pin code should be activated in the BLUETOOTH menu. The Vertex Laser uses default code 12345. Use this code if the pin code is activated. 1. 2. 3. Press MODE to turn the instrument ON. Use SHIFT and go to BLUETOOTH press MODE. Activate pin code 12345 by pressing SHIFT (if asked to according to above instructions) otherwise else -NONE-and press MODE. Then activate the Bluetooth by pressing SHIFT and select ON. It is now possible for other, external device to connect to the Vertex Laser.
4.
Data is sent by pressing the MODE on the Vertex Laser after having measured a height, angle or distance. The Vertex Laser will not disconnect the Bluetooth connection even when the unit is switched off. This implies that the Vertex Laser can transfer data with Bluetooth after having been switched off and turned on again, without having to reconnect the Bluetooth. Note that the Vertex Laser consumes more battery when the Bluetooth function is active. Do not forget to turn the function off when not in use, for example when moving between sample plots. To turn off the Bluetooth function, simply change the ON to in the BLUETOOTH menu. If the Bluetooth function has been activated and the Vertex Laser is switched off, the Bluetooth symbol is shown in the Vertex Laser display as a reminder that the Bluetooth function is up and running. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CONNECTED, RECEIVING COMPUTER DEVICE AND THE VERTEX LASER SHOULD NOT BE LONGER THAN 10 M OR 32 FT. THIS IS THE MAXIMUM DISTANCE TO TRANSFER DATA WITH BLUETOOTH. Documentation can often be limited on which ports in a computer unit that is dedicated for the Bluetooth function. The operator may have to try his way through.
