Eva Bartlett To Headline
Nelson Event
Human rights activist and journalist Eva Bartlett will
headline the Canadian in Gaza event Tuesday, December
3 at 7 pm at the Nelson United Church, 602 Silica Street
(near Josephine).
Eva, who has lived in occupied Palestine since May,
2007, will be joined by Greta Berlin and Dr. Bill Dienst,
editors of Freedom Sailors (2012). Tis is a collection of
frst-hand accounts of how a small group of ordinary
people conceived and executed a plan to break Israels
blockade of the Gaza Strip, the frst successful attempt
from among the international Freedom Flotilla.
As a volunteer with the International Solidarity Move-
ment, Eva accompanies Gazan farmers and fshers under
threat of harassment and sniper fre from Israeli forces.
She rode with medics in their ambulances during the
2009 assault on Gaza that killed 1500 Palestinians. She has
documented this and the other daily tragedies, injustices
and reality of Palestinian lives in the West Bank.
Dr. Bill Dienst, MD, has been to Gaza seven times, both
independently and with medical teams. In Gaza he has found
hope rising, especially among the youth. Greta Berlin works
tirelessly for the human rights of the Palestinian people.
Freedom Sailors will be available for sale at the event,
sponsored by KAIROS Nelson and NEON (Nelson End the

Selkirk College Instructors Delve
Deeper into First Nations History
In an efort to weave together a history severed by an
international border, a pair of Selkirk College instructors
headed south this past summer to explore Lakes People
history frst hand. In June, Duf Sutherland and Myler
Wilkinson were invited to visit Inchelium on the Colville
Confederated Tribes Reserve in Washington State, just
south of Christina Lake. Hosted by Arrow Lakes Facilita-
tor Virgil Seymour of the Colville Tribe, Sutherland and
Wilkinson were guided through the traditional lands on
the American side of the border that form a common his-
tory with First Nations in the Kootenay-Boundary.
Its important to understand the indigenous people
who existed through and across borders over time, says
Wilkinson. Now there is an international border that
separates us, but you can see historically speaking and in
a cultural sense, it is really one land.
Wilkinson has been teaching in the Selkirk College
English and Peace Studies programs for 27 years. Suth-
erland is a member of the history department and has
been teaching out of the Castlegar Campus for 15 years.
Both instructors have a passion for the First Nations
history of our region and jumped at the opportunity to
take a closer look. Te Lakes People in the Inchelium
are directly related to the Sinixt in Canada. Tough the
Canadian government declared the Sinixt extinct in
Canada in 1956, many still live in the region and are
tied to the people south of the border.

Te Upper Columbia Co-op Council is teaming up with
the Basin Business Advisors Program this winter to spread
the word about why the co-op businesses model is known
as the Swiss Army Knife of local economies. Te UCCC
will host a number of Co-ops 101 luncheons throughout
the West and East Kootenay in December and January, to
explore how co-ops can ignite business ideas for entrepre-
neurs, artists and artisans, retiring business owners, gradu-
ating students, health care professionals, farmers, consult-
ants, car users, childcare workers and others.
Community leaders and those already involved in the
co-op/credit union sector are invited to fnd out more
about the benefts and mechanics of co-operation.
Participants in the Co-ops 101 sessions will build an
understanding of the basic structure, principles and values
of co-operative enterprises, while learning about examples
of thriving co-ops in a variety of sectors across the prov-
ince from the large scale international operations of Best
Western Hotels, to Shif, the 4-member bicycle delivery
worker co-op in Vancouver.
Co-op businesses creatively generate employment while
enhancing economic and community development in the
area. Co-op enterprises thrive in times of economic and
social challenges, bridge the gap between business and
people, and enable individuals to do together what they
could never do alone. Teir adaptability to virtually any
business sector has earned them the Swiss Army Knife
comparison, and the thriving network of co-ops and cred-
it unions in Southeastern BC provides a built-in support
system for co-op entrepreneurs.

Annual Winter Faire
On Saturday, December 7, as we get closer to the dark-
est part of the year, the Nelson Waldorf School hosts their
annual Winter Faire. It is a wholesome natural celebration
of the coming magical winter season and festivals of light.
Te school is transformed into a winter village. Tere
are winter crafs and wool works for creative fun. Candle
dipping is a silent meditative place that brings forth the
inner beauty and peace of this season. Te Children-On-
ly Store is full of beautiful handmade gifs where children
can do some gif shopping.
Experience the diferent stages of bread making at the bakery.
When you are hungry you can fnd a warm solstice soup at the
Frost Bite Cafe, or hot cider and wieners at the Fireside Cafe.
Past the central fre and the village feld is the Cedar Forest
Gnome Celebration in the Kinderhouse. Children of all ages
eagerly await to go in the much loved Cookie Kingdom to hear

Luminous: A Choral Concert
Nelson Choral Societys upcoming concert, Luminous,
is a musical celebration of light amidst winters darkness.
Come in out of the cold and be transformed by light,
warm and heavy as pure gold as expressed through in-
candescent music.
Te pieces in this concert were all chosen because I felt
they were able to transcend the explainable and in some
way shone, says the choirs musical director Kathleen
Neudorf. Te choral selections include pieces by contem-
porary composers such as Latvian Rihards Dubra, Nor-
wegian Ola Gjeilo, and American Eric Whitacre, as well
as older works a French carol and pieces by 19th century
German composer Felix Mendelssohn. Noemi Kiss will
be joining the choir as a soloist for two of the pieces. Ori-
ginally from Hungary, the soprano now lives in Argenta,
teaching and occasionally giving local concerts when not
performing and recording internationally.
In addition to singing with the choir, Kiss will also per-
form Bachs pivotal Cantata 82A with instrumentalists
Ruth Langevin on fute, Wendy Herbison and Vic Neufeld
on violin, Martine Denbok on viola, Bob Hargreaves on
harpsichord, and Jef Faragher playing basso continuo.
Te cantata incorporates one of Bachs most moving
meditations on the approach of death the libretto is
based on the biblical story of Simeon who was told by the
Holy Ghost that he could not die until had seen Christ.
Afer holding the baby Jesus in his arms, and recognizing
his saviour, he is able to die in peace. Te title Ich Habe
Genug translates into I have enough or I am content.

In the third component of the program, the Cotton-
wood Singers perform largely sacred works by contem-
porary composers including American Morten Laurid-
sens O Nata Lux, Canadian Larry Nickels Kyrie Eleison
and Dubras Oculus Non Vidit. Te pieces are rich and
deeply textured, using the layering of parts to voice their
meaning.
Concerts are at the Capitol Teatre: Saturday, Decem-
ber 14 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 15 at 2 pm.

Local Amnesty International
Volunteers Defend Human Rights.
When hundreds of letters from Amnesty International
members began arriving, our lives started to improve the
children could return to school, we could walk out to the
market without being threatened, life became safer, said
Issa Ebombolo, a Congolese Peace Studies student at Sel-
kirk College.
Te Nelson chapter of Amnesty International will be
sponsoring the annual Amnesty International Global Write
for Rights letter writing event on December 7 and 8, as part
of International Human Rights Day. People all over the
world will write letters supporting human rights defenders
identifed by Amnesty International.
Imagine! the power of simply writing a letter! On re-
ceiving the letters, the ofenders realized that thousands of
people around the world knew what was going on in the
Congo (DRC) and were watching and urging the UN to put
a stop to it, said Issa.
He described how, while he was living in a refugee camp in
Zambia, he was interviewed by Amnesty International work-
ers gathering information about the situation in DRC, where
he was born and raised. Te information contributed to a
report Amnesty published in 2003 about the horrifc human
rights violations in DRC. Te report was sent to the United
Nation and the International Criminal court, which then
sent envoys to Congo to verify the fndings. Amnesty mem-
bers throughout the world were informed and began a global
letter writing campaign urging these two bodies to act.
Tis year Write for Rights will take place at the Nelson
Public Library on Saturday December 7 from 10 am to 1
pm and Sunday December 8 from 11 am to 3 pm at Oso
Negro. All information and letter writing materials will be
supplied. We invite you all to join us a simple letter can

GYPSY is a 6 year old spayed great Pyrenees/Anatolian
shepherd mix with a long and shaggy tan and brown coat
that came into the Trail Regional BCSPCA on November 1,
2013 as an owner surrender.
Gypsy is very sweet and loves the company of people and
other dogs. She would do well in a home where she can be
indoor and outdoor, and is given a lot of attention from her
people. She has some separation anxiety when left alone
which causes her to bark, so if her family was around a lot,
she would get more confdent in times when she is alone.
Gypsy is good with livestock but due to her anxiety cannot
be a full livestock guardian.
Basic obedience and leash desensitization would go a long
with her, as she will run from the leash right now, but once
on leash, she is a good walker. A fenced yard is also needed
for Gypsy as she can be a runner.
Gypsys coat is very long and thick and will need regular
brushing and trips to the groomer from time to time. She
has been brushed a bit while here in shelter and doesnt
seem to mind it.

Te international line has cut us of from the history on
both sides of the border, says Sutherland. Even though I
have taught the history of our area for many years, I dont
think I really understood what it was like below the bor-
der. I didnt really feel like I knew those people until I went
down there to see their community.
While in Inchelium, Seymour was able to shed more
light on one of the more prominent Sinixt families that
lef the area for the United States in 1919. Sutherland
says little was known about exactly what happened to the
Christian family when they lef Canada and Seymour was
able to fll in some of the blanks.
Te men also visited the Pia Mission which is located
just over the border from Christina Lake. Te Catholic
mission was an important stopping point for Sinixt who
traveled south.
It was a great opportunity to take our knowledge from
Canada and to viscerally feel and to see some of the joined
realities that are across an international border, says
Wilkinson. It was the Sinixt or Lakes People who were
traveling through these lands and we were very fortunate
to see what happened to some of them when they went
down to and stayed in the United States.
Like one ofen does in important situations where you
have not had knowledge, there are real people attached to
these places and ideas. And those real human beings on
the land afect the ideas and the places. We would like to
be generous with those people and their histories.
Afer spending two days in Inchelium and taking part
in an elders luncheon as part of their experience, the two
men decided to carry on through the Columbia River cor-
ridor. While journeying through some of the important
stops of interest that were once traveled by the likes of
David Tompson, Lewis and Clark, and other early ex-
plorers, the two men eventually arrived at the mouth of
the mighty Columbia in Astoria, Oregon.
I was really interested to fnally go down and try fg-
ure out where some of these places were that I have been
teaching about over the years, says Sutherland. Te
rivers are really the historical highways of this region...
they have shaped the history. I took some pictures and did
some video that I can now share with my students.
Sutherland is currently teaching BC History, Lat-
in America History, Canadian History, and the History
of Western Civilization. Next semester he will add West
Kootenay History to the list and will be able to share some
of his frst-hand experiences with students.
Wilkinson is teaching Peace Studies, Canadian Liter-
ature and English Literature this semester. He is one of
the founding members of the Mir Centre for Peace on the
Castlegar Campus.
Wilkinson, Sutherland and Seymour will be presenting
Te Cultural Homelands: Sinixt/Lakes People in the Koo-
tenays and Beyond. We want to lead people down a little
road they may not be able to go down, Wilkinson says of
the presentation that will include photos and a short flm
by Seymour. Places they can see and refect upon that
show this linkage across borders in deep time.

CBC/RBC Sports Day Canada
Te fourth annual Sports Day Canada is happening
across the country again on November 30.
We have our second annual version of the event here in
Nelson at the Nelson & District Community Centre on
Saturday November 30 from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Local sport clubs are showcasing their sports in booths
and with demonstrations. Taekwondo, gymnastics, and
Rhythm Ropers are all providing short programs and are
welcoming anyone who cares to give it try. Many other
sport groups will be in attendance to ofer information
and encouragement. Te event is free.
Te NDCC is ofering Loonie (child), and Toonie
(adult) fees for the full facility from 3 pm to 4:30 pm that
day also, as well as complimentary skate rentals.
Jersey Day November 29 is also happening again

Te Capitol Teatre proudly presents the 26th Annual
Christmas Pantomime this year featuring Rapunzel.
Tere are fve performances on December 5-8. Te story is
very loosely based on the original Brothers Grimm Rapun-
zel, one of the best-known fairy tales written in 1812. Te
unmistakably famous line Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down
your hair has become an idiom of popular culture and has
been retold in movies, books and other presentations.
Te Capitol Teatre Christmas Pantomime features a cast
comprised of local community players ranging in age from
6 to 60. Tis years panto features experienced actors like
Bruce Ormond and Michael Pearce, plus frst-timers like
Darren Fuss and Deb Kozak. Directing the Panto is fun
and exhilarating. Te combination of actors from all ages
and levels of experience is the best a director for this com-
munity production can ask for, says director, Karen Agnew.
Find yourself in a deep dark Russian forest in the cursed,
manless Kursk Village where you are welcomed by Baba,
who has lost her wand, played by Mary Defeo. Meet the
prince, played by Eli Geddis, looking for true love; and
encounter the witch, played by Sydney Black, who tries
everything in her power to prevent happiness. Mackenzie
Hope amuses as the distressed Dame Lobelia with a big
worldly attitude. Tere are pixies and gypsies, a dancing
bear, perogies-on-a-stick and borscht....Panto audiences
are always invited to participate in the show and this year
is no exception. Children and adults alike will delight in
singing along, talking back and letting the prince and the
witch know exactly what they think of them.
Pantomimes are designed for a multi-age audience, so
theres something for everyone to enjoy, from physical
comedy and one-liners, to all the singing and dancing that
are traditionally seen in this type of show. Agnew spends
a lot of her time at rehearsals just giggling. I never quite
know what to expect. Te cast always surprises me with
some little gem that makes their character just perfect.
Not only is there a large cast onstage, but there are doz-
ens of volunteers backstage. Lisa Loather and Tom Lavis
and an incredible team of very talented painters have
done an amazing job of scenery painting, says Agnew.
Mary Anderson has taken on the huge task of props
master for this panto, and Leslie Dickinson from the Cap-
itol costume shop, with her volunteers, is busy getting all
the outfts together. Te precision involved makes a pro-
duction like this look super professional. Its all about
participation, and it sure wouldnt happen without our
stellar volunteers.
Te pantomime is a Nelson tradition and theres no bet-
ter way to kick start the holiday season than to come out
to the panto with your family and boo, cheer and laugh
along with your fellow Nelsonites onstage.

A National Giving Day
You may have heard of Black Friday, the day that
marks the unof cial beginning of the Christmas shop-
ping season, or Cyber Monday that promotes on-line
shopping the Monday afer US Tanksgiving. Both days
are marketing ploys to boost sales for commerce and
corporate profts.
Well, consider Giving Tuesday. It is a new movement
for giving and volunteering, taking place each year afer
Cyber Monday. Te opening day of the giving season,
it is a day when charities, companies and individuals join
together to share commitments, rally for favourite caus-
es and think about others. We already have two days that
are good for consumerism, and now we have a day that is
good for communities and charitable organizations.
Te Osprey Community Foundation, based in Nelson, has
three af liate funds that support good works in other West
Kootenay Communities Te Community Fund of North
Kootenay Lake, Te Salmo Valley Fund, and the Slocan Val-
ley Legacy Fund. Gifs to Osprey for any of these funds sup-
port registered charities in the various communities.
Giving Tuesday is a way of bringing philanthropy to the
attention of everyone with the hope that they will con-
