I have been fascinated with all sorts of illusionistic art since childhood. In later life I took decorative painting lessons and in doing so discovered Tromp loeil. This is an extremely detailed art form, that blurs the real and unreal.
This crumpled paper is actually painted on to canvas. The use of light, shade create a topography that appears so real, the viewer would expect it to actually feel like crumpled paper as the apparent texture is so vivid.
This artwork is painted on a flat wall at Miller Brewery. It not only shows the incredible talent of the artist but also encapsulates the point of illusionistic art, blending the real world with the imagined and blurring the lines of substantial and the represented world.
It makes the viewer come back for a second look, what more could an advertiser want?

This is a photograph of a painting I did a couple years ago. The picture is copied from a book on Tromp Loeil painting. The actual painting is my own work.
With use of perspective and shading, I was able to create the illusion of depth and three dimensionality, therefore giving a realistic appearance.
The use of highlighting on the nose of the cow, gives the illusion of the cow leaning through the not just the barn door but the painting itself. Again shade and light come together to give us a realistic three dimensional effect.
The following slides show some of my work using different mediums such as painting on glass and fabric in a quilt I had constructed. And using a special fabric to print an image onto for use within a quilt.
Digital manipulation is an extremely eye catching way of inducing ideas and emotions in the viewer.
Use of one colour to further exaggerate the sea in an otherwise black and white image
The capacity for marketing and advertising using these methods holds no bounds. This is the future of media and the ability to utilise and manipulate imagery is an important lesson for our children, and the future of our community and indeed the world.
The following slides show some of my own digital photography. Adobe Photoshop was used to edit and manipulate some of these images.
A blend of images was used to convey the message of the varied types of wildlife at a park.
The colours tend to make the Lorikeets stand out and jump forward on the page, implying their importance over the Koala
The use of a frame creates a solitary feeling. The child is engrossed in his study of the flowers. The wooden fence also helps to frame the child Without too many colours in the image, the focus is on the child.
This is the poster used to advertise the opening of the movie Gone With The Wind.
The artist has used warm colours to depict heat and passion, along with specific body language to evoke a feeling of strength versus the femininity of the actress in the movie. We immediately imagine a love story with a strong masculine hero.
Whilst the two posters are undoubtedly similar, the stars of Australia are shown to be more level, thus evoking feelings of equality, he is a strong man, but she is also a strong independent woman. Perhaps the Australia posters creator consciously used a familiar layout to evoke a memory of another popular movie in order to be more effective in their marketing.
Painting, drawing, photography, sculpture all have the power to illicit emotion in the viewer They are a powerful tool in getting a message across The Arts create an environment where individuals can express their creativity and use critical reflectiveness when viewing others artwork.
