May 10 Define Torsion. What are the possible types of loads which can act in shafts? Give torsion equation. May 09 What is the formula for power transmitted by a shaft? A solid circular shaft transmits 75kW power at 200rpm. Calculate the diameter of shaft , if the twist in shaft is not to exceed 1degree in 2metres length of shaft, and shear stress is limited to 50 MN/ m2. Take C=100GN/ m2. In a Tensile test a piece of 25mm diameter, 200mm gauge length, May 10 stretched 0.0975mm under a pull of 50kN. In a torsion test, the same rod twisted 0.025radian over a length of 200mm when a torque of 0.4kNm was applied. Evaluate Poissons ratio and three elastic moduli for the material. A hollow shaft of external diameter 120mm transmits 300kW power at 200rpm. Determine the maximum internal diameter if the maximum shear stress in the shaft is not to exceed 60N/mm2. A hollow circular shaft 20mm thick transmits 294kW at 200rpm. Determine the diameter of the shaft if shear strain due to torsion is not to exceed 8.6x10-4. Take C=8oGN/m2.

Prove that hollow shaft is stronger than solid shaft by comparing the solid and hollow shaft by strength. Prove that hollow shaft is less than the weight of solid shaft by May 09 comparing the solid and hollow shaft by weight. May 10 A solid cylindrical shaft is to transmit 300kW at 100rpm. 2 (i) If the shear stress is not to exceed 80MN/m , find its diameter. (ii) What percentage saving in weight would be obtained in this shaft is replaced by a hollow one whose internal diameter equals 0.6 of the external diameter, the length, the material and maximum shear stress being the same? A hollow shaft having an inside diameter 60% of its outer diameter is to replace a solid shaft transmitting the same power at the same speed. Calculate the percentage saving in material, if the material to be used is also the same. A hollow steel shaft is made to replace a solid wrought iron shaft of the same external diameter, the material being 35percent stronger than iron. Find what fraction of outside diameter the internal diameter maybe. Also neglect coupling, find percentage saving in weight by substitution, assuming that steel is 2 percent heavier than wrought iron.

What are the types of springs? Define closely coiled helical springs. Give deflection formula for springs. A closely coiled helical spring of round steel wire 10mm in diameter having 10 complete turns with a mean diameter of 120mm, subjected to an axial load of 200N. Determine the deflection of spring, Maximum shear stress in the wire and stiffness of spring. Take C=80Gpa. A closely coiled helical spring is to have a stiffness of 900N/m in compression, with a maximum load of 45N and a maximum shear stress of 120N/mm2. The solid length of spring is 45mm. find
