Gabriel Garcia Marquez Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the most famous Colombian writer. He was born in Aracataca, Magdalena, in 1928. His grandfather was a veteran colonel who participated in the Colombian civil war at the end of the 19th century. When he was a child, he lived with his grandparents who were excellent storytellers and were a great influence on him. Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote: I feel that my writing has been about the experiences of the time I spent with my grandparents. He says that, although he left Aracataca early in life, he still lives there in spirit. The two central themes in his literary work are power and solitude. He is the creator of Macondo, a world that was very rich because of a banana boom but became very poor and corrupt. He was awarded the Novel Prize for Literature in 1982. He has written many books such as: One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Love in the times of Cholera, the General in his Labyrinth, Of Love and Other Demons and the most recent one, News of a Kidnapping. One Hundred years of Solitude has sold more than 20 million copies and has been translated to more than 30 languages. He has also written film scripts (Edipo Alcalde, among others) and is very active as a writer, journalist, and screen writer.
