Shakeria Corsey Professor Susan Lago English 1100 College Writing 15 September 2013 Transforming Humanity In a world where technology and computers are used every day and artificial intelligence is becoming more and more advanced. Begin to question; are computers changing the way we live and our humanity? Artificial intelligence is an excellent thing that has been created and without it where would we be? We use computers for almost all of our daily routines, communication, paying bills, ordering food and lots of other things. But could all of these artificial intelligence computers be harming us? In the video I watched, The Rise of Artificial Intelligence: PBS Digital Studios, it has been said that the artificial intelligence of computers are becoming so advanced that its helping with serious medical surgeries that we have today. Its completing tasks that a professional doctor could not do by themselves. Also its learning how to come up with new systems and even discovering drugs that could help out with new diseases in the world (PBS Digital Studios). It was said in an article that, Using real patient data, the researchers compared actual doctor performance and patient outcomes against computer decision-making models. The artificial intelligence models obtained a 30% to 35% increase in positive patient outcomes, Bennett said (Mearian). This shows that computers are becoming to be a better help than the actual doctors. They are also performing at a more efficient rate than professional human

doctors. But think about this, and question, are artificial intelligence computers actually helping us or are they in fact hurting us? If we begin to use computers and artificial intelligence becomes more advanced it could potentially takeover and leave humans with fewer jobs. Doctors are using computers to perform surgeries and before you know it AI, will begin to perform full surgeries without the help of a human. In the article Toward An Intelligence Beyond Mans it stated that, Computers match people in some roles, and when fast decisions are needed in a crisis, they often outclass them. The human brain has a wiring defect that prevents it from absorbing several streams of information simultaneously and acting on them quickly (Jastrow 207). For example, the calculator was invented and humans began to get lazy and used it as an easy way out. Most people cant even do simple math because they became so dependent on their calculator that they dont feel the need to know how too actually to do it using paper and pencil. This also makes you think, are we as, humans, so dependent on artificial intelligence computers that if it was ever to be taking away would we actually be able to survive? About 75% of this worlds population owns a cellphone. Every year it begins to get even more advanced than it already is. The cellphone is probably the biggest creation that has affected our humanity of communication. For example, people would rather text or tweet each other than to have an actual verbal conversation with their peers. Most people dont even know how to have a proper verbal face to face conversation because they are so used to texting. Also, a lot of people lack in a proper social life because they are too busy on social networks and they would rather stay inside to be on their computer. In school I believe its becoming more and more a noticeable problem because most of the students are having grammatical and spelling issues. Students are so used to texting and using short abbreviations for everything thats its actually

beginning to affect their school work. These devices have already begun to affect our humanity through communication, with even more advanced artificial intelligence what will be next? In the far future I believe that one day all physical verbal communication will eventually come to an end. In conclusion, in the article Toward An Intelligence Beyond Mans it said, We are still in control, but the capabilities of computers are increasing at a fantastic rate, while raw human intelligence is changing slowly, if at all. Computer power is growing exponentially; it has increased greatly over the years since 1964. Artificial Intelligence is still an excellent thing created today, but we as a people need to not abuse it to the point where we cant live without it (Jastrow 207). Technology was made to make our life easier not takeover our life completely. We cant always depend on technology, the world should not stop because the power went out life must go on.
