Tributes to Our Friend, Mike Tann

BY ANDREW WHITE, HURON CITY MaNaGER It was with great shock and sadness the community learned of the unexpected death of Mike Tann Wednesday afternoon. The utter surprise of this event, something which naturally happens so many thousands of times every day, was created because this time it happened to coincide within our circle. This affected so many because the lost individual contributed so much of his life to public and community service. After completing his undergraduate work at the Ohio State University in 1966 he spent a generation gaining diverse experience as a teacher, businessman and successful entrepreneur. Mike married Judy and they started a family. In the middle of his developing life, and in a move that exemplied his condence in taking a chance when opportunity knocked, he went back to school. In 1979 he was awarded an MBA degree, again from Ohio State. In 1985, after a successful business career Mike switched gears and was appointed to the position of Finance Director with the city of Huron. It was with this organization he found his groove and made his most indelible mark professionally. Promoted to the position of City Manager in 1993, following the tragic loss of Mike Solomon, Mike Tann would spend the next twelve years of his career leading the city toward his unique vision. During his tenure, the city created a new level of comprehensive emergency service protection and established its rst ever Parks & Recreation Division. The development of the citys Boat Basin, pursuit of the former Conagra property and the construction of the citys Corporate Park all started during this same tenure. Part of Mikes legacy will live on in these assets as they continue

Mr. Tann, Mr. Manager, Colleague, Friend, Mentor, Mike -- goodbye, God Bless.
By Sheila Ehrhardt, Huron Chamber of Commerce Director This tribute to former Huron city manager Mike Tann was written by his successor, Andy White. It appeared in the Sandusky Register on Monday, Nov. 25, the day Mikes obituary was published. It is an eloquent salute to a great friend and mentor. Along with Mikes many local friends and colleagues, our business community has lost a great supporter. He has served many positions on our board of directors, and even in retirement, Mike pitched in wherever he saw a need. Several years ago, when closings of several large area industries seemed imminent, Mike teamed up with Huron Library director Anne Hinton to form the Business Resource Network, an informal group that provided assistance to prospective and existing business owners in identifying and locating the resources they needed to succeed. Always a team, Mike and Judy, created the restful ambience of Capt. Montagues, a haven for Huron visitors that drew the attention of several national travel writers. Yet, they always found time to help out with Chamber projects, such as selling carnival tickets at Riverfest, ringing the bells for the Salvation Army kettle drive and serving on our scholarship committee. Mike felt strongly about the importance of education and was active in school issues, always wanting what is best for Huron' s youth. In his column, Andy mentioned the greatest legacy and challenge that Mike left us to look for the things he saw and strive to make them better. We pledge to do just that, dear friend.

to provide community benet and his legacy will grow as many of his visions have yet to be realized. His greatest ability was in selecting and developing young and untested professionals. I experienced this directly when, on September 7, 2004, Mike selected me out of a competitive eld of more seasoned and experienced candidates to be the citys rst Assistant City Manager. He gave me my rst real opportunity to do something of professional importance and I will be forever indebted to him for his condence in gifting me a life changing opportunity. My experience is not isolated. There are many examples of Mikes vision and belief in the traditionally overlooked among us. There are several individuals Ive had the pleasure of working with, because of Mike, who have advanced to high level positions in the same fashion. Collectively, Mikes personnel selections have ascended to positions managing Hurons Parks and Recreation division; a Parks and Recreation department in Arlington, Texas and another in Irondequoit, New York; a Human Resource Director at Heidelberg University by way of executive stops in Sandusky and Erie County; a recently retired Finance Director from Huron; a corporate executive in Illinois; and his own successor as City Manager. What we will miss most in Mikes absence is the silent satisfaction we were greeted with when running into him. He was proud of us when we did well and supportive when we were challenged. We will continue to try and earn his approval and aspire to promote similar benets he provided to us, to future generations of young professionals. We will look for the things he saw and strive to make things better.

BY CHRIS MIScHLER Its hard to sit down and write much of a story about a blistering cold Saturday evening where the team you grew up with and loved loses in the Division V State Regional Finals 60 - 13. Coldwater was just at out better and played a great game. Nothing more to say really. But there is more to say. Much more. The Huron Tigers nished 9-4 this season and it was an entertaining adventure every week. I want to thank the young men, cheerleaders, marching band, coaches, and volunteers who made it all happen. When I rst saw this years schedule, I admit, I was concerned. How could scrimmages against Lake and Bucyrus prepare the team for the rigors of

Elyria Catholic, Bellevue, and Norwalk St. Paul. I knew having Cody Thompson at quarterback was really the only play. He was the best player on the eld and what better way to ensure he would get the most touches then by playing QB. Not the most accurate passer, but certainly the most escapable I had ever seen. Problem was, after the rst game lm, everyone Huron would face knew exactly what was coming. I wasnt concerned about Margaretta SMCC, or Port Clinton. But, those rst three non-conference opponents, and Clyde, and Perkinsmuch less the playoffsthose would be tough teams

HANDICAP SIGNS
We have all seen handicap parking spaces at businesses and governmental parking lots. There are specic standards that must be met for these parking spaces to be considered valid handicap parking spaces. According to Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.69 and Section 3781.111, handicap spaces must be identied by a sign mounted on a xed or moveable post or otherwise afxed in a vertical position so that the distance from the ground to the bottom edge of the sign measures not less than 5 feet. Additionally, if the sign or replacement sign was erected on or after October 14, 1999, there must be included on the sign or next to the sign a notice

BY JUDGE BILL STEUK, HURON MUNICIPAL COURT

that states the ne applicable for the offense of illegally parking in a handicap parking space. Owners of parking lots that do not have a valid sign can receive a warning for the rst offense and then for a subsequent offense, a ne of $25.00 for each parking location that is not properly marked. Huron City Ordinance Section 351.04 also identies the standards required for a valid handicap parking space. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specic legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Huron Police Partner with Huron Schools to Introduce A.L.I.C.E. during In-Service Day
Parents are reminded there is no school on Monday, December 2, 2013 due to the State approved in-service day for Huron City Schools. The district is fortunate to have been awarded this in-service opportunity by the Ohio Department of Education and will focus on school security and safety, explained Superintendent Dennis Muratori. School Resource Ofcer Keith Lobsinger has received his A.L.I.C.E. Training Certication and will lead the presentations and drills on Monday with the assistance of several Huron Police Ofcers. A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Ofcer Lobsinger and the Huron Police Ofcers will share with the approximately 150-160 Huron City School employees how the A.L.I.C.E. program guidelines have evolved over the years from nationwide incidents. Law enforcement must keep up with the current

trends in criminal activity. Traditional lockdowns have changed and there may be better options available to increase survivability, explained Ofcer Lobsinger. Ohio is one of the leading states to implement the A.L.I.C.E. program with over 200 schools or universities practicing their guidelines, stated Lobsinger. The A.L.I.C.E. program was introduced shortly after the Columbine shootings when a dinner table conversation between a husband and wife (a police ofcer and an elementary school principal) Greg and Lisa Crane, discovered more could be done if a better program was in place. Parents with questions or concerns regarding school safety and security are encouraged to contact Mr. Muratori by phone at 419.433.1234 ext. 5026 or via email at ASKDENNY@HURONHS.COM or may contact Ofcer Lobsinger through email at klobsinger@huronhs.com

I remember saying to someone after that game that it would be a shame if this team missed the playoffs. Because the lasting memory of any seniors last season could have come down to the last 15 seconds of that second game. Again, the teams memory proved short and the Tigers came out and dominated a Norwalk St. Paul team that also made it to the Regional nals in their playoff division. So the team not only survived the non-conference schedule where could conceivably gone without a win and went a very respectable 2-1. and looked strong. Shrubs and Trees for Winter Color

Recently many calls have come asking about what to plant to add more color in the garden for winter. Winter can be beautiful in the gardens if you plan ahead. For years I have been adding these colorful interests to my garden and have been very pleased. There are many books in libraries about winter color, or color in the garden for all seasons. Some of the best suggestions for our area are of course winterberry. The cultivar winter red is a great one for home gardens and the berries stay on for months. Remember with winterberry you need a male and female for the berries to set. This plant prefers semi-shade to full sun, and has new green berries on it during the summer months for added interest. Lacebark pine is another favorite of mine, and its lovely all year with its exfoliating bark. Its bark is many shades of aking bark. Bark colors will range from cream, light green, reddish brown, and occasionally gray and white. The tree also has pink tinged pinecones that take years to mature. The tree

grows slowly 30-50high. American holly is wonderful, is wonderful, and most of us have seen snipped branches in arrangements for Call Jean today to schedule your exclusive tour. the holidays. You will need both male 419.624.1171 and female plants to have berries. However, if you dont like simply red berries, research a little on the web, and you will nd canary holly which has yellow fruit. Plant in part to full sun, and watch this specimen grow to 40 high and 30 wide. Dont forget the various grasses available in our area. Miscanthus grass is about 5 tall, striped, and in fall blooms beautiful golden-tan tassels. These tassels hang on throughout winter, and if Assisted Living Memory Care Skilled Nursing planted near a window, is a joy to watch Rehabilitation Independent Living wave in each wind. On a still window, you can see frost frozen between the spaces in the tassels. 5000 Providence Drive Sandusky, Ohio Red-twig and yellow twig dogwood ProvidenceCenters.org are another variety to plant to show the beautiful stems of the shrub throughout the winter. The stems are so pretty, they look wonderful in a vase for display throughout the winter season. The shrub I own grows to 8-9 high and spreads vertically as well, and has now reached 8 wide.
