Competency Objective: To experience and understand each step in the criminal justice system. Resources/Activities: 1. Investigation/Citation Complete filings Do a ride-along with an officer o Submit application to Sherriffs Office 2. Preliminary Hearing Observe Preliminary hearing 3. Arraignment & Plea Observe an arraignment hearing 4. Not Guilty- Plea bargains, discovery, bail Research how cases are resolved outside of court o Talk to DAs who do charge negotiations 5. Jury Selection Observe a jury selection 6. Trial Observe a trial Research famous Santa Barbara trials o James Hollywood case o UCSB Jones murder case Interview lawyers and/or judges o Justice Ochoa Dept. 1 7. Sentencing Observe a sentencing Research sentencing objectives o Punishment (justice for the crime) o Rehabilitation (preparing criminals to reenter society) o Deterrence (deter others from committing a similar offense) 8. Corrections Tour jail Evaluation/Verification: 1. Create a criminal research report using the crime statistics data (graphing trends, creating seasonal forecasts, etc.) 2. Write 1-3 page reflections on each practical experience: ride-along, prelims, arraignment, jury selections, sentencing, trials and jail tour. 3. Complete a paper summarizing my experience with the justice system. 4. Collect news and briefs written on cases I have observed and do a reflective comparison on public information and real-life observation.

Academic Objective: To study the life and expertise of a successful criminal lawyer and explore the statistical correlation between crime in Santa Barbara and different explanatory variables. Resources/Activities: 1. Read My Life In Court by Louis Nizer 2. Complete a regression model analysis of the County of Santa Barbara Crime Rate

Evaluation/Verification: Include chapter summaries and research project in my internship portfolio. Self-Assessment Objective: To fine-tune the way I present myself to potential employers and analyze my abilities and experiences, finding ways of turning them into assets in my job searching. Resources/Activities: 1. Add recommendations to linked in 2. Compile accomplishment portfolio with references, accomplishments, published articles and other resources for job searches. 3. Take personality and strength assessments 4. Keep a weekly reflective work journal 5. Have the office of life planning evaluate and fine-tune my resume 6. Write a personal statement using the things I have learned about myself through the internship process. Evaluation/Verification: 1. Collect all assessment results, job portfolio materials, journals, personal statement and resume in my internship portfolio. Skills Objective: To practice analyzing the law by learning to write a case brief. Resources/Activities: 1. Talk to lawyers in my office about strategies and techniques for writing. 2. Collect and read briefs on famous cases. 3. Choose an influential Supreme Court case to analyze and write a brief on. Evaluation/Verification: 1. Include drafts of my case brief(s) in my internship portfolio.
