Lee 2 1. [2 mins.] Bridge: Introduction Hello, class. As you walk in, please turn in your homework to the appropriate file, and then write down your homework for next class. We will discuss what the homework assignments are later in class. After youve completed these things, please look at the front board for your Do Now Activity (which will say Pick up the Do Now Handout on the counter). 2. [11 mins.] Step 1: Do Now Activity & Mini-discussion Now that youve settled down, were going to look at the projector. A series of images are going to appear, and I want you to write down the name of the object. This isnt a trick test Im just curious to see how you refer to these objects. Name the first thing that comes to your mind, and well go over the sheet afterwards. Are there any questions? [Go through the PowerPoint slideshow with images] Now that weve gone through all the images, were going to go over the answers that you gave. Is there a volunteer for object number one? [Continue to discuss all objects in this fashion; possible answers for objects are listed at the end of this section] Alright, so weve had an interesting collection of answers. Some of your answers were pretty similar, but there were others that we hadnt even heard of. Dont you think its interesting that we all speak the same language, but there are multiple words for different objects? Do you know of a word for that? [Student responses] If students struggle, some possible prompting questions: Have you ever read a book like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn where the characters were speaking in English, but they were speaking in a different kind of English? Did your teacher ever tell you if there was a term for that? or Have you ever talked to a person with a British accent, and he or she referred to the toilet or bathroom as the loo? How do you think dialects have come about? [Student responses] Why yes, this could be the result of where youre from. Lets look at these maps to see some more words and phrases that different regions of the country are more familiar with, but before we do, are there other words or phrases that youve heard, but dont use? [Student responses] Alright, lets take a look at these maps to see how some of these words and phrases are used in the nation. 1. Lollipop or sucker 2. Soda or pop 3. Sub, grinder, or hoagie 4. Tennis shoes or sneakers

This is going to be a think-pair-share activity, so Im going to give you five minutes to fill out this sheet on your own. When five minutes is up, youre going to turn to the person next to you and discuss your answers. You will have another five minutes to do this, so if you dont finish answering the questions, you may use this opportunity to finish the questions together.
