FIVE FAMILIES LEFT HOMELESS AFTER A BLAZE

Melaka: Five families celebrated their New Year in grief as they lost all
their belongings, including their homes, in a blaze this morning. The
incident that happened at 7.30 a.m. destroyed all five houses in just a few
minutes. The strong wind aided the fire. However, there were no
casualties. The families are now sheltered at the nearest school. Those who
wish to donate can do so by contacting The Orient Newspaper at 06-2233445.

Youths are introduced to cigarettes by peers or friends. They love to
experiment, and being curious, they tread on forbidden grounds. A mere
challenge by a friend can trigger off a smoking habit just to be accepted into a
group of friends. Young people also tend to attach the macho image to
smoking, imitating celebrities who smoke. Therefore, it is important that famous
personalities realize their moral role and become models to inculcate positive
habits in our youths. It is time for the youth to be aware of the dangers of
smoking.

SECTION C
[25 marks]

Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.

2

3

4

6

7

8

9
In my opinion, I am a wonderful woman and mother to my daughter. I am sure she is
very lucky to have me as her mother.

People always tell me, Oh, you have such a lovely daughter. Shes very pretty. I do
agree with them. May Lin is a beautiful girl. It makes me very proud when people speak to
me about her beauty. I value beauty. When you are beautiful, people notice you. They
admire you and you get opportunities that you wont get if you are plain. At least, that is
what I believe. I am a famous actress because I am beautiful. Of course, I can also act but
you tell me, how many ugly actresses are famous? Not many.

I take care of my beauty. I exercise every single day to keep slim. I am always on a
perpetual diet. You will never see me eating chocolate or cakes. No! No! My usual meal is
salad. I also go for cosmetic surgery once every five years to smoothen out the wrinkles in
my face. Naturally, I look at least fifteen years younger than I am. I put all younger actresses
to shame with my looks and figure. In fact, I am sure the day will come when I look younger
than May Lin.

May Lin is my only daughter and I love her dearly. When she was young, I used to be
extremely busy on the film sets so I never spent much time with her. Sometimes, if the films
required overseas locations, I would spend months abroad. Luckily, my husband and the
maids took care of her. I always brought back dozens of gifts for her but she was rather
ungrateful. She never appreciated them enough.

When I think back, I remember, she never understood that I worked hard to give her a
good life. She preferred the company of her father and the maids. She is still very close to
them. I sometimes see them all laughing and joking together. They never include me in their
jokes.

As May Lin was growing up, I had quite a difficult time with her. If I bought her a pretty
party dress, she would say, Stop treating me like a doll. If I criticized any of her friends,
she would get mad. They are my friends. I dont care if they are poor or plain. They are
kind and loving thats all I care about, she would scream. I really dont know what she
meant. But of course, I forgave her. After all, she was my daughter.

I sometimes think she does things deliberately to hurt me. Look at her job. She is a
social worker working among the people in the slums. What kind of job is that? It does not
even pay her very well. I feel like crying especially when with her looks, she could have
become a model or an actress. I try to advise her but she never listens to me.

I do not even like her boyfriend. He has no money and drives a Datsun. Huh! There are
so many rich men interested in her but she does not even look at them. I told her father to
talk to her but he said that her boyfriend is a decent man and that I would not understand.
What is there to understand? He has no money and so no future. Really, daughters nowadays
are difficult.

In my time, it was much easier. I listened to my mother and took care of my face and
figure. Then, following her advice, I entered filming industry and became famous.

questions that follow.

People said rather humorously that if you tried to catch the rain in a cup it
would only fill a teaspoon. Towards the beginning of the seventh year of drought,
the summer had become an anguish to live through. The air was so dry and
moisture-free that it burned the skin. No one knew what to do to escape the heat and
tragedy was in the air. At the beginning of that summer, a number of men just went
out of their homes and hung themselves to death from trees. The majority of the
people had lived off crops, but for two years past they had all returned from the
lands with only their rolled-up skin blankets and cooking utensils. Only the
charlatans, incanters, and witch-doctors made a pile of money during this time
because people were always turning to them in desperation for little talismans and
herbs on the plough for the crops to grow and the rain to fall.

2 AWARDING MARKS FOR LANGUAGE
Marks are awarded for:
(i) Accurate English
(ii) Style and tone appropriate to the task

** Candidates may use their own words instead of the words given in the stimulus.
However, the meaning must remain unchanged.

Mark
Range
Description of Criteria

A
19 20

The language is entirely accurate apart from occasional first draft slips.
Sentence structure is varied and sophisticated - shows that the candidate is
able to use various sentence length and types to achieve an intended effect.
Vocabulary is wide and used with precision.
Punctuation is accurate and helpful to reader.
Spelling is accurate across the full range of vocabulary used.
Paragraphs are well-planned, have unity and are appropriately linked.
The topic is addressed with consistent relevance.
The interest of the reader is aroused and sustained throughout the writing.

B
16 18

The language is accurate but there will be occasional minor errors or first
draft slips.
Sentences show some variation in length and type, including the use of
complex sentences.
Vocabulary is wide enough to convey intended shades of meaning with some
precision.
Punctuation is almost always accurate and generally helpful to reader.
Spelling is nearly always accurate.
Written in paragraphs which show some unity and usually linked
appropriately.
The piece of writing is relevant to the topic and the interest of the reader is
aroused and sustained throughout the writing.

C
13 15

The language is largely accurate.
Simple structures are used without errors; errors may occur when more
sophisticated structures are attempted.
Vocabulary is adequate to convey intended meaning although it may not be
sufficiently developed to achieve precision.
Sentences show some variety of length and structure although there is a
tendency to use one type of structure, giving it a monotonous effect.
Punctuation is generally accurate; although errors may occur in more
complex uses.
Spelling is generally accurate; for common vocabulary.
Written in paragraphs which show some unity; although links may be absent
or inappropriate at times.

Mark
Range
Description of Criteria

D
10 12

The language is sufficiently accurate for meaning to come through.
There will be patches of clarity, particularly when simple vocabulary and
structures are used.
Errors will occur when more complex sentences are attempted.
There may be some varieties of sentence length and type but this may not be
successful in enhancing meaning or arousing interest.
Vocabulary is adequate but lacks precision.
Punctuation is generally correct but does not enhance or clarify meaning.
Simple words will be spelt correctly but errors may occur when unfamiliar
words are used.
Written in paragraphs but show lack of planning and unity.
The topic is addressed with some relevance but the reader may find
composition at this level lacking in liveliness and interest value.

E
7 9
Meaning is never in doubt, but single word errors are sufficiently frequent
and serious to hamper precision and speed of reading.
Some simple structures may be accurate, but accuracy is not sustained.
Vocabulary is limited and either too simple to convey precise meaning or
more ambitious but imperfectly understood.
Simple words may be spelt correctly but frequent errors and punctuation
make reading the script difficult.
Paragraphs lack unity. Links are incorrectly used. There may be errors of
sentence separation and punctuation.

U (i)
4 6

Meaning is fairly clear but the incidence of errors is high and definitely
impedes the reading
There will be many serious errors of various kinds throughout the script but
they are mainly single word type, i.e. they could be corrected without
rewriting the whole sentence.
A script at this level will have very few accurate sentences.
There may be frequent spelling errors.
Punctuation will sometimes be used correctly but sentence separation errors
may occur.
Paragraphs may not be used, or if used, show a lack of planning.

http://edu.joshuatly.com/
http://www.joshuatly.com/
4

Mark
Range
Description of Criteria

U (ii)
2 3

Sense will be decipherable, but some of the errors will be multiple in nature,
requiring the reader to re-read and re-organise before meaning becomes clear.
At this level, there may be only a few accurate but simple sentences.
This type of script may also be far short of the required number of words.
Whole sections of the report may make little or no sense. There are unlikely to
be more than one or two accurate sentences. The content is comprehensible,
but its tone is hidden by the density of errors.

U (iii)
0 1

Scripts in this category are almost entirely impossible to read.
Whole sections may make no sense at all or are copied from the task.
Award 1 mark if some sense can be obtained.
The mark 0 should only be awarded if the report makes no sense at all from
the beginning to end.

NB No script will fit into any one of the categories described above. The appropriate
mark for a script is therefore determined by deciding which category most nearly
reflects its characteristics. Examiners should not construct any hierarchy of
characteristics when allocating a mark, but should assess the letter as a whole
before deciding on any category.

The topic is addressed with some relevance but the reader may find
composition at this level lacking in liveliness and interest value.
E
20 - 25
Meaning is never in doubt, but errors are sufficiently frequent and serious
to hamper reading.
Some simple structures may be accurate, but a script at this level is
unlikely to sustain accuracy for long.
Vocabulary is limited - either too simple to convey precise meaning or
more ambitious but imperfectly understood.
Simple words may be spelt correctly but frequent errors in spelling and
punctuation make reading the script difficult.
Paragraphs lack unity or are haphazardly arranged.
The subject matter will show some relevance to the topic but only a partial
treatment is given.
The high incidence of linguistic errors is likely to distract the reader from
any merits of content the composition may have.
U (i)
14 - 19
Meaning is fairly clear but the high incidence of errors throughout the
writing will definitely impede the reading.
There will be many serious errors of various kinds throughout the script,
but they are mainly of the single word type, i.e. they could be corrected
without rewriting the whole sentence.
A script at this level will have very few accurate sentences.
Although communication is established, the frequent errors may cause

blurring
Sentences will be simple and very often repetitive.
Punctuation will sometimes be used correctly but sentence separation
errors may occur.
Paragraphs lack unity or there may not be any paragraphs at all.
U (ii)
8 - 13
The reader is able to get some sense out of the script but errors are multiple
in nature, requiring the reader to read and re-read before being able to
understand.
At this level, there may be only a few accurate but simple sentences.
The content may be comprehensible, but the incidence of linguistic error is
so high as to make meaning blur.
This type of script may also be far short of the required number of words.
U (iii)
0 - 7
Scripts in this category are almost entirely impossible to read.
Whole sections may make little or no sense at all
Where occasional patches of clarity occur, marks should be awarded.
The mark 0 should only be given if script makes no sense at all, from the
beginning to end.
