Factory Reset Procedures

The following instructions can be used to reset a device with an unknown password to its factory-default configuration. Contents Cisco Routers (R1 - R6) Cisco Catalyst Switches (S1 - S4) Cisco Aironet Wireless Access Points (W1) Force10 S25N Switch (S5)

Cisco Routers (R1 - R6)


At the console, press enter, then ~p (or ~~p if connected via SSH) to invoke the Opengear power menu. Type R to reset the power to the router, then press . to exit the power menu. After a moment, you should see the POST process appear on the console. Router> ~p Power Commands: O P R s . ? Power ON Power OFF Power cycle off then on again Show current power status Exit power menu Show this message

[R4] Power > R Cycling power ... Connection 1: Unknown [R4] Power > . Type ~b (or ~~b if connected via SSH) and then press enter to issue a break sequence. Continue repeating this sequence (including enter) until the rommon prompt appears. Type confreg 0x2142 to set the config-register to 0x2142, which instructs the router to ignore its startup configuration file at the next boot. Type reset to reload the router. Allow the router to fully boot, which will take several minutes. When the router finishes powering on, you will be prompted to begin the guided setup process. Decline by answering no. From the Router> prompt, type the following to erase the startup configuration and restore the config-register to its normal value (0x2102): Router> en Router# write erase Erasing the nvram filesystem will remove all configuration files! Continue? [confirm] [OK] Erase of nvram: complete Router# configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z. Router(config)# config-register 0x2102 Router(config)# exit Issue the command show version from exec mode and scroll to the last line to verify that the new config-register value will take effect upon the next reboot.

Cisco Catalyst Switches (S1 - S4)


The factory reset procedure of Cisco Catalyst switches unfortunately requires a physical presence at the lab to depress the "mode" button on the switch chassis while rebooting the switch. This procedure cannot be performed remotely. If you have been locked out of one of the lab switches, please contact stretch for assistance.

Force10 S25N Switch (S5)


At the console, press enter, then ~p (or ~~p if connected via SSH) to invoke the Opengear power menu. Type R to reset the power to the router, then press . to exit the power menu. At the prompt, enter the command restore factory-defaults to erase the startup configuration and then reload the switch: BOOT_USER # restore factory-defaults Erasing NVRAM contents...
