Paper 2.

2: Pre- Synthesis Essay Your goal for this paper is to take two sources and properly utilize them to create and support an argumentative thesis of your choice. You may choose to write about science or language, and you must use at least one of the essays we read in class. Your second source may be any article or essay of your own choosing that helps to support your thesis. You may also select any of the rhetorical modes that you feel would help strengthen your argument. Using multiple modes correctly can effectively support your overall goal or thesis for the paper (Exemplification, Comparison/Contrast, Classification, CauseEffect, Extended Definition). You may use the prompts below to formulate your paper or you may come up with your own topic and have it approved by your teacher.

Prompts
1.) Technology is an ever-evolving issue. New technologies seem to arise every day, opening new possibilities and previous generations could never have imagined. Inherent in many of these new scientific discoveries and technologies are new ethical questions that must be solved. In an essay, identify one such ethical issue raised by technology and suggest how this question should be addressed. 2.) If we examine the everyday lives of previous generations, we can see that scientific discovery has greatly modified our existence. From this notion, we can easily imagine that as we become older, our lives will continue to change with new discoveries. Considering how scientific discoveries have progressed in our lifetime, use your understanding of current science and imagine what the world may be like in the future (50100 years). Do not just list. 3.) Scientific inquiry and research is often used as a method to study and solve potential problems that face society, but funding for such research is often constrained by limited government funding or only what is economically viable from the private sector. Identify what you feel to be the biggest challenge facing society (American or Global), and propose how you feel scientific research could be used to solve this problem. Feel free to explain why this problem is more important than other problems, but also explain the expected outcomes. 4.) We live in a society where people describe and define their identities in a variety of ways. The way that our identities are formed and shaped can vary as well depending on several factors. Evaluate, whether ones identity can be shaped or redefined by language, and if it can be, determine how. 5.) Our country is and has been comprised of immigrants and relatives of immigrants since the beginning. Because of this, some argue that there could be a divide between these many diverse cultural backgrounds. In a well written essay, decide whether a common language is necessary for national identity or patriotism and propose ideas to either institute the idea of a common language or other ideas to bring our nations citizens together. 6.) English as a second language instruction (ESL), plays an important role in the education of immigrants who have come to America. These students are put in a situation where they need to learn and embrace a new language while still try to hold onto the language and customs of their home country and culture. Determine whether the strategy of teaching English only in the classroom is an acceptable policy for ESL instruction in our nations schools and if not, determine what policy or procedures would be more beneficial to our country and these students. 7.) Business and politicians frequently manipulate language to either sell their products or gather votes, but often the language can be dishonestly used. Often, the businesses or politicians will justify that some dishonesty or sleight of hand is necessary or justified for many reasons: making money, protecting national security, etc. Evaluate the level of dishonesty that takes place in either advertising or political language. Can this dishonesty be justified?
