RESEARCH QUESTION

How can we illustrate the analogy between automobile design & building design? OR What is the link between automobile design and building design?

INTRODUCTION
The Industrial Revolution brought about many changes during the eighteenth century and it can be said that it (in a way) changed the whole appearance of the world. The fundamental changes that industrialism brought reshaped the very world man lived in, replacing handicraft objects with serially-produced and standardized goods, new materials, the latest constructions, the standardization of types of housing and individual elements, the mechanization of building-production etc. the remarkable innovations that had taken place in the field of mechanical technologies, measuring architecture against the trailblazing examples of modern ocean liners, aircraft, and automobiles. The architecture is a living component and reflection of our time and it is not essentially different from our machines, our mechanical devices, our airplanes, and our automobiles. The automobile, with its gigantic industrial complex of design, production and support has an enormous impact upon the society that relies on it, including design and production of the built environment. I believe that architecture and the automobile have been changing in parallel for the last hundred years. They may even have occasionally crossed each others paths.

SCOPE
The automobile, with its gigantic industrial complex of design, production and support has an enormous impact upon the society that relies on it, including design and production of the built environment. The automobile industry has become like a gigantic umbrella that covers a wide range of technologies and aspects of society. They have all come to center on the object of the automobile. Industrialization brought to architecture a new program with new materials and processes. Alternative methods of construction were possible. As the diversity of life and living styles increased, demand was created for new types of buildings. Factories, railway stations, museums and exhibition pavilions were built with few historical precedents. Industrial revolution paved the way for progressive theories and descriptions of what was occurring, and for the possibilities of the automobile as we now know it. Building design was not something new. We have building ranging from 2000 B.C. however industrialization had a huge impact on building design as well. Like introduction of new materials, the latest constructions, the standardization of types of housing and individual elements, the mechanization of building-production etc. I would focus on building design from 20th century till date and would focus my study on institutional and residential buildings. However automobile was a far more new idea and came into realization in early 19th century. In my scope regarding studying automobile design, there is a huge diversity in automobile categories. I focus would be on passenger cars. The design of automobiles took a whole new leap from 1920 when industrialization took place and first mass production happened. Thus my timeline of study of architecture would include timeline from 1920-2005.

LIMITATIONS

The main limitation in my dissertation is that all the major invention that made a landmark in automobile industries are not available in India, so there is no firsthand information available .i have to rely on the book of foreign author and on internet. Similarly all the architectural styles that came after industrialization happened mainly outside India and today also there are very few examples in India to study for my research. The major examples where I could find link between automobile design and building design arent near my vicinity.

JUSTIFICATION
We as architects are deprived of possible alternatives that lie just outside the profession. This presents the argument - that studying the automobile will help us to know a great deal more about architecture then simply trying to speculate on architecture and its technology. I feel that after doing this dissertation, I would be able to improve/enhance my approach toward solving a design problem. I believe that automotive designers are the most efficient designer, designing to save and maximize every inch of space.in my dissertation, I believe I would successfully find the link between the two fields and incorporate the efficient designing methods in my practice.
