With the holiday shopping sea-
son currently in swing, business-
es are dealing with the shortest
holiday shopping season possible,
with only 26 days between
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
That means theres one less
weekend for shopping, said
Mark Morgan, president of the
Moorestown Business Associa-
tion.
Morgan added that this is the
first time in more than a decade
that local businesses in
Moorestown have faced such a
short season, with the last time
being in 2002.
Morgan added that he was
shocked to see large retail stores
open on Thanksgiving, but said
that Small Business Saturday has
definitely seemed to pick up mo-
mentum within the last few
years.
In addition, Sustainable
Moorestown and Towni Localis-
tics helped to drive customers to
shop local on Nov. 29, sponsoring

The holidays are a joyful time,
with turkey on the table and the
smell of baked goods wafting
through the warm house. The
thought alone is comforting for
some.
For soldiers fighting overseas,
the same holiday feeling is out of
reach.
Operation Yellow Ribbon will
be hosting a cookie drive on Sat-
urday, Dec. 7 to collect homebaked
goods and store-bought favorites.
We want to give soldiers a
taste of home and remind them
that theyre not forgotten, said
Dave Silver, president of Opera-
tion Yellow Ribbon.
OYR is a non-profit organiza-
tion that prepares and sends care
packages, in addition to organiz-
ing welcome-home ceremonies
for those serving in Operation
Enduring Freedom.
We do this for the people who
serve our country so we dont
have to. We have the freedom and
we exercise the freedom, to sup-
port them, Silver said. Its our
job to welcome them home. Were
most thankful for their service
for what they do and were thank-
ful for all they do for us.
The operation is always collect-
ing supplies for the next round of
packages to be sent. OYR also ac-
cepts candy still sealed, in addi-
tion to items listed on its website.
We want people to bake their
favorite treats or buy their fa-
vorite baked item to send out to
the troops, Silver said.
The goodies are carefully pack-
aged by OYR and sent overseas
via priority mail on Dec. 9 with
expected arrival one to two weeks
following shipment.

Moving toward a 2014 munici-
pal budget for Moorestown Town-
ship, department heads presented
township manager Scott Carew
with individual budgets.
Carew said some things were
outside of the department heads
control.
For instance, Carew explained
that employee salaries would fall
outside the department heads
area of control as two bargaining
units, Communication Workers of
America and the Fraternal Order
of Police, are still up in the air,
with both union contracts run-
ning out at the end of this year.
In addition, Carew said the
Public Works Department is re-
viewing trash bids, which went
out for request for proposals on
Nov. 14.
With acting director of Public
Works Kenneth Ewers absent, the
remaining department heads
took turns submitting their budg-
ets to Carew, after reviewing any
potential changes to their budget
from last year.
Municipal court administrator
Helena Robinson spoke about the
possibility of adding officers dur-
ing the townships municipal
court proceedings with
Moorestown Police Department
Director Harry Johnson, now
that Moorestowns municipal
court recently switched from the
Maple Shade municipal court to
the Cinnaminson municipal
court.
Robinson voiced concerns to
Johnson about the U-shaped Cin-
naminson court and how it
makes it difficult to account for
members of the public who can
be out of sight at times. She

Santa Claus knows that some
children need a little extra time to
get comfortable with him, share
their wish list and get that perfect
picture. So he's stepping away
from bright lights and noisy
crowds to visit with children who
have special needs, along with
their brothers and sisters, at the
Moorestown Library.
Enjoy a story, a snack and a
visit with Santa. Bring your own
camera for pictures. Santa will
appear on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 4:15
p.m. in the library meeting room.
No registration is required.
If you have questions, call the
Children's Department at 234-
0333, ext. 5.
The holidays are a festive time
for most people, but those who
have lost someone close to them
can be overwhelmed by memories
and find it hard to connect with
the spirit of the season. For the
past 17 years, The First United
Methodist Church in Moorestown
has helped bereaved families and
friends searching for a meaning-
ful way to remember loved ones
during this season by hosting a
Holiday Remembrance Service.
This year, the special service
will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15
at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the
church, 446 Camden Ave.
The non-denominational serv-
ice was created to offer people,
amid the spirit of the season, a
quietly joyful way to gather to-
gether and cherish the happiness
their loved ones brought into
their lives. Those who attend are
invited to bring a candle in a can-
dlestick to light and place at the
altar in honor of departed family
or friends. The service is open to
everyone, and each year it has
drawn people from all over the
South Jersey community. The
church provides nursery care for
small children and a reception
after the service. Additional can-
dles will be available.
For more information, call the
church office at 235-0450.

As the producing artistic director for the
Moorestown Theater Company, Morgan
said he could not speak for all small busi-
nesses in Moorestown, but said he would
probably stay open later and offer more or
deeper discounts to offset the shorter sea-
son if he owned a small retail business.
For Moorestown Hardware, a blanket
discount during the weekend after Thanks-
giving was one of the ways it planned to
help drive sales.
Were trying to generate more excite-
ment earlier, co-owner Julie Bender said.
Bender said while the store usually sent
a flyer around that time of year of holiday
items it does not normally carry, this year
she and Pete Bender decided to try the
blanket discount.
We wanted to try something new, Julie
said. It kind of makes them create their
own sale.
To help gear the customer toward the
holiday season, Julie also said holiday light
displays were set up in the store as early as
Oct. 15.
We even put out our snow shovels, just
to let them know we had them, she said.
According the Julie, the challenge was
to get customers thinking about holiday
shopping prior to Thanksgiving. She ex-
plained it was no easy feat, as many cus-
tomers told her they just couldnt get into
the holiday shopping mindset that early.
Julie added that in the hardware busi-
ness, other factors could also play a part in
the amount of revenue generated during
the season, such as the weather.
If snow comes, we dont mind, Julie
said. But its a good thing and a bad
thing.
Julie explained that a little snow can
help put shoppers in the holiday mindset
and prompt them to do more shopping, but
blizzards can have the opposite effect.
She said that with people not as aware of
the shorter season this year, she expects to
see more last-minute shoppers.
Owner of Carls Shoes Carl Barone also
expects to see a drop in sales compared to
last holiday season, but explained that the
season is not typically his highest, since he
does a good deal of orthopedic work. He
also explained that shoes are typically not
bought as often as gifts because of the cus-
tom-fitting involved.
However, Barone said he does expect to
see some sales for both UGG Boots and gift
certificates to slide off a little from the pre-
vious year.
Even I will do less business because of
the shorter shopping season, he said.
Sure, its going to hurt.
Barone added that many business own-
ers he has talked to share his sentiments.
T
hanksgiving has passed. Left-
overs have been consumed.
And end-of-the-year holiday
decorations are being proudly dis-
played.
Here at Elauwit, that means only
one thing its time to get rolling on
Deck the Paws and Help a Collie.
For newcomers, Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie is our annual animal
shelter drive. The unusual name is a
really bad play on Deck the Halls
with Boughs of Holly. Indeed, more
animals than just collies are helped by
the drive.
Heres how it works:
Our generous drop-spot locations
have volunteered to place a donation
tub in their office. You can visit the of-
fice and drop off aid to animal shelters
and rescue groups. Theyre always
looking for dog and cat food, cat litter,
cleaning supplies (especially bleach),
office supplies, gift cards, blankets,
bedding and, of course, treats and
toys.
The 2013 version of our holiday
drive is in full force. This year, we have
five locations that will serve as drop
spots, or donation centers. These are
places that have volunteered to place a
tub in their lobbies or otherwise allow
people to visit them to make dona-
tions.
This years drop spots are:
Oldies & Goodies, 101 W. Merchant
St., Audubon
Cherry Hill Volvo, 1810 Route 70
West, Cherry Hill
Elauwit, 108 Kings Highway East,
3rd Floor, Haddonfield
Burl-Moor Driben Animal Hospi-
tal, 104 Kings Highway, Moorestown
Holman Toyota-Scion, 1301 Route
73 North, Mt. Laurel
Every year, we deliver dozens of car-
loads of food, toys, cleaning supplies
and more to local shelters. We want to
do the same this year.
But it all begins with you and your
generosity.
Help us help animals in need this
holiday season.

Looking forward to next year,
Morgan said the MBA wants to
create a gift certificate program
that will make town wide gift cer-
tificates available to the public,
similar to those currently used in
Maple Shade.
In addition, Morgan said the
MBA is looking to the county,
which is in the process of recruit-
ing retailers for gift certificates
that can be used throughout
Burlington County.
To me its a great idea, Mor-
gan said. Your money is being
spent here.
He added that he hopes to see
both the county-wide gift certifi-
cates and the town-wide certifi-
cates available by next holiday
shopping season.
Hopefully this time next year,
theyll have theirs running and
well have ours running, Mor-
gan said.
In addition, Morgan said there
has been talk of moving MBAs
Candlelight Night to a date closer
to Thanksgiving in the future, as
well as also looking into possibili-
ties of tying the Moorestown
Community Houses Tree Light-
ing Celebration to a shop local
initiative.
There is a lot being done to let
the customer know were here,
Morgan said. There are a lot of
things happening here.

DAVID DONACHY AIA, ARCHITECT

Distinctive architectural design and
site planning of residential, historic,
healthcare and commercial building types.
Over 30 years of experience
added that she wanted to find a
way to keep people from wander-
ing into other parts of the build-
ing when Moorestown holds
court.
Johnson also went over several
items added to the budget, includ-
ing bulletproof vests for eight
members of the force, with each
vest costing an estimated $1,200.
Johnson added that the vests
were needed to replace those that
have outlived their shelf life of
five years.
Johnson talked about replac-
ing officers car cameras with dig-
ital cameras for an estimated ex-
pense of $95,000 and plans to re-
place several cruisers as well.
We put in for five vehicles to
replace the aging fleet, Johnson
said.
Carew asked about the police
department converting to elec-
tronic ticketing. Johnson said
more research was needed to en-
sure the system would not be too
cost prohibitive. Johnson said a
drawback of electronic ticketing
is that officers cannot pull up a
subjects prior offenses while
writing a ticket.
Some of the other items includ-
ed on the department budgets in-
cluded copy machines, which
were included on both Robinsons
and director of recreation There-
sa Millers budgets.
Miller added that the Parks and
Recreation Department is expect-
ing to make the move to the new
North Church Street Recreation
Center in less than two months.
Were going to be ready to go
around the 15th of January,
Miller said. Thats the projected
date.
Community Development Di-
rector Thomas Ford said that
with recent development in the
township, permit applications
have generated a decent revenue
in the office.
However, Finance Department
Director Thomas Merchel said
one area of revenue concern for
the township is that wireless
phone carriers are no longer con-
tinuing their cellular antenna
leases with the township. Merchel
added that the drop in leases was
a result of evolving technology.
Carew said after the meeting
that the move to the new
Moorestown Town Hall and
Moorestown Library would not
impact the 2014 budget, since
money for the move was appro-
priated through the town hall
bond ordinance.
However, Carew said possible
upcoming projects that might be
factored into the budget include
roadwork after the township engi-
neer was recently authorized to
conduct a study on all roads with-
in the municipality.
Following the budget hearing,
Carew said he expects he and
Merchel will be able to place a
budget before the township coun-
cil by early January.

makes the difference, Silver
said.
We think this is a special way
to add their personal touch to
treat the troops. This is a way you
can feel more in touch for the peo-
ple that serve our country.
OYR receives letters and emails
from soldiers who have returned
home, and still remember how
the packages from home affected
them.
You know youre doing the
right thing when they remember
you and theyre reaching out af-
terward. Its pretty amazing, Sil-
ver said.
OYR is run by volunteers and
supported by donations made by
the community. Currently, the or-
ganization is pulling from funds
normally used to ship items to
purchase wish list items, which
can be found on the site.
We take anything across the
board, specifically anything we
take for granted here, Silver
said. We accept candy, baby
wipes for hygiene purposes, Girl
Scout cookies are coming up
soon. Last year we received more
than 1,000 boxes, which we sent
overseas.
Silver is constantly pleasantly
surprised how supportive the
South Jersey community is in cel-
ebrating and supporting the
troops.
The whole South Jersey com-
munity chips in and does what
they can, Silver said. The Rav-
tizs are our biggest supporters,
and other businesses have donat-
ed hundreds of dollars to OYR as
well.
According to Silver, a Mt. Lau-
rel Starbucks manager is plan-
ning something for the troops
soon.
The way I look at it, its a wave
and it keeps building. You expect
the wave to break and hit the
shore, but it doesnt, it keeps
building and building, Silver
said. The support from the com-
munity makes you want to do
more and its amazing.
According to Silver, OYR will
continue to host welcome-home
greetings and greet the soldiers
with rock star welcome homes
and raise funds to solicit donated
items to pack and ship.
Everyone is special in South
Jersey the way they support our
troops and support OYR, Silver
said. Its wonderful to see the
community, all ages and groups,
send things to our troops.

COOKIES NEEDED
OYR will be accepting:
Baked goods, store bought cookies and treats.

are not the groups first preference as they weigh more and are costly
to ship). Containers of any type will not be returned, as they will be used
to ship to recipients.
Personal, unsealed notes with donations are encouraged. Feel free to
write about your cookie baking or a note of encouragement, etc.
Adults: feel free to include personal e-mail addresses should you like a
response from the recipients. OYR cannot promise recipients will corre-
spond as some do not have e-mail access, but there are some who will
write back.

notes to show support to the troops. No last names, addresses or phone
numbers of children.
Items will only be accepted on Saturday, Dec. 7 in person. For more
