The Sun
The holidays are a joyful time, with
turkey on the table and the smell of
baked goods wafting through the warm
house. The thought alone is comforting
for some.
For soldiers fighting overseas, the
same holiday feeling is out of reach.
Operation Yellow Ribbon will be host-
ing a cookie drive on Saturday, Dec. 7 to
collect homebaked goods and store-
bought favorites.
We want to give soldiers a taste of
home and remind them that theyre not
forgotten, said Dave Silver, president of
Operation Yellow Ribbon.
OYR is a non-profit organization that
prepares and sends care packages, in ad-
dition to organizing welcome-home cer-
emonies for those serving in Operation
Enduring Freedom.
We do this for the people who serve
our country so we dont have to. We have
the freedom and we exercise the free-
dom, to support them, Silver said. Its
our job to welcome them home. Were
most thankful for their service for what
they do and were thankful for all they
do for us.
The operation is always collecting
supplies for the next round of packages
to be sent. OYR also accepts candy still
sealed, in addition to items listed on its
website.
We want people to bake their favorite
treats or buy their favorite baked item to

The Sun
Perhaps theres something in
the water or maybe the hard work
is paying off.
The Tabernacle Board of Edu-
cation recognized 29 students
from the district for achieving
perfect scores on a portion of the
New Jersey Assessment of Skills
and Knowledge at Novembers
meeting.
To achieve a perfect score on
any portion of the assessment is a
remarkable achievement, Super-
intendent George Rafferty said.
Each year, New Jersey chal-
lenges its students to do their best
on the states assessment, com-
monly referred to as the NJ-ASK.
Districts establish high measures
of achievement for their teachers
and students, with the goal of
achieving 100 percent proficiency
in all areas tested. The teaching
force accepts that challenge with
independently-developed and pro-
fessionally-delivered lessons to
ensure the student receives the
best possible education. Accord-
ing to Rafferty, their philosophy
has produced exceptional results
over the years, and last year was
no exception.
Much of the credit belongs to
our teachers in addition to our
students and parents, Rafferty
said. Its a tremendous achieve-
ment for them as well.
Many of the 29 students re-
turned for the meeting to receive
certificates and be recognized by
the board.
To be able to include students
in the presentations was great,
Rafferty said. Two of the stu-
dents are now at Seneca and they
came back for it, which was very
cool.

Rafferty credited the districts
benchmark assessment, Meas-
ures of Academic Progress, for
the students overall prepared-
ness for the exam.
The MAP allows us to inter-
vene if students are in danger of
failing the NJ-ASK. It helps iden-
tify which students are struggling
in reading, math or science, Raf-
ferty said.

T
hanksgiving has passed. Left-
overs have been consumed.
And end-of-the-year holiday
decorations are being proudly dis-
played.
Here at Elauwit, that means only
one thing its time to get rolling on
Deck the Paws and Help a Collie.
For newcomers, Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie is our annual animal
shelter drive. The unusual name is a
really bad play on Deck the Halls
with Boughs of Holly. Indeed, more
animals than just collies are helped by
the drive.
Heres how it works:
Our generous drop-spot locations
have volunteered to place a donation
tub in their office. You can visit the of-
fice and drop off aid to animal shelters
and rescue groups. Theyre always
looking for dog and cat food, cat litter,
cleaning supplies (especially bleach),
office supplies, gift cards, blankets,
bedding and, of course, treats and
toys.
The 2013 version of our holiday
drive is in full force. This year, we have
five locations that will serve as drop
spots, or donation centers. These are
places that have volunteered to place a
tub in their lobbies or otherwise allow
people to visit them to make dona-
tions.
This years drop spots are:
Oldies & Goodies, 101 W. Merchant
St., Audubon
Cherry Hill Volvo, 1810 Route 70
West, Cherry Hill
Elauwit, 108 Kings Highway East,
3rd Floor, Haddonfield
Burl-Moor Driben Animal Hospi-
tal, 104 Kings Highway, Moorestown
Holman Toyota-Scion, 1301 Route
73 North, Mt. Laurel
Every year, we deliver dozens of car-
loads of food, toys, cleaning supplies
and more to local shelters. We want to
do the same this year.
But it all begins with you and your
generosity.
Help us help animals in need this
holiday season.

Two Pirettes softball teams
win fall tournaments
The Tabernacle Athletic Association
softball program offers not only recreation-
al softball league play each spring for our
Tabernacle girls, but TAA also offers an ad-
ditional softball opportunity to girls resid-
ing in the Seneca sending district who
might want to dedicate more time to learn
the game of softball and better develop
their skills. Girls between the ages of 8-15
are eligible to try out in August of each
year for one select team at the 10 and
under, 12 and under or 15 and under age
levels in the Pinelands Pirettes organiza-
tion. In addition to playing in their home-
town spring leagues, the Pirettes players
also go on to practice hard and play both an
additional fall and a spring season on their
Pirettes teams. It's a big commitment, and
the players and their families quickly get
used to a steady diet of softball. The
Pirettes teams compete against other se-
lect teams in Burlington and Camden
counties and also participate in local tour-
naments.
This fall, the 10U Pirettes team achieved
a fall season record of 16-5 while the 12U
team enjoyed a 13-2-1 season. To top off
their amazing 2013 fall seasons, both the
10U and 12U Pirettes teams captured the
championship titles at the 2013 United
Girls Softball Association Fall Classic
Tournament. Kim and Jim Albertson are
the head coaches of both the 10U and the
12U Pirettes teams, and their dedication to
their Pirettes players is unparalleled.
After seven seasons of dedication, com-
mitment, competition and continuous de-
velopment as a team, the 15U Pirettes play-
ers enjoyed their final season of play this
fall. These girls represent the first-ever
Pinelands Pirettes team that formed as 10U
players in the fall of 2010. Their wonderful
reputations, not only as individual players
but also as a team on the field of play, are
very well deserved. The 15U team has been
coached by Gwen, Tom and Lynne Hedden
since its inception, and Kim Briggs and
Britt Conard assisted tremendously over
the years. The entire Pirettes family ex-
tends our very best wishes to these girls as
they embark on the new softball adven-
tures that await each of them.
TAA would like to extend our heartfelt
thanks and congratulations to all of the
2013 Pinelands Pirettes players, their amaz-
ing coaches, assistant coaches and all of
the parents who complete our wonderful
Pirettes experience and help us maintain a
tradition of developing player skills and an
understanding of what it means to be a
team player while instilling a love for the
game of fast pitch softball.

and put your heart into it, it
makes the difference, Silver
said. We think this is a special
way to add their personal touch to
treat the troops. This is a way you
can feel more in touch for the peo-
ple that serve our country.
OYR receives letters and emails
from soldiers who have returned
home, and still remember how
the packages from home affected
them.
You know youre doing the
right thing when they remember
you and theyre reaching out af-
terward. Its pretty amazing, Sil-
ver said.
OYR is run by volunteers and
supported by donations made by
the community.
Currently, the organization is
pulling from funds normally used
to ship items to purchase wish list
items, which can be found on the
site.
We take anything across the
board, specifically anything we
take for granted here, Silver
said. We accept candy, baby
wipes for hygiene purposes, Girl
Scout cookies are coming up
soon. Last year we received more
than 1,000 boxes, which we sent
overseas.
Silver is constantly pleasantly
surprised how supportive the
South Jersey community is in cel-
ebrating and supporting the
troops.
The whole South Jersey com-
munity chips in and does what
they can, Silver said. The Rav-
tizs are our biggest supporters,
and other businesses have donat-
ed hundreds of dollars to OYR as
well.
According to Silver, a Mt. Lau-
rel Starbucks manager is plan-
ning something for the troops
soon.
The way I look at it, its a wave
and it keeps building. You expect
the wave to break and hit the
shore, but it doesnt, it keeps
building and building, Silver
said. The support from the com-
munity makes you want to do
more and its amazing.
According to Silver, OYR will
continue to host welcome-home
greetings and greet the soldiers
with rock star welcome homes
and raise funds to solicit donated
items to pack and ship.
Everyone is special in South
Jersey the way they support our
troops and support OYR, Silver
said. Its wonderful to see the
community, all ages and groups,
send things to our troops.
OYR is run by volunteers

COOKIES NEEDED
OYR will be accepting:
Baked goods, store bought cookies and treats.
Packaging: if possible, please put the cookies in layers in large plastic
bags or in disposable containers. (Cookie tins will be accepted but they
are not the groups first preference as they weigh more and are costly
to ship). Containers of any type will not be returned, as they will be used
to ship to recipients.
Personal, unsealed notes with donations are encouraged. Feel free to
write about your cookie baking or a note of encour-
agement, etc.
Adults: feel free to include personal e-mail
addresses should you like a response from
the recipients. OYR cannot promise recipi-
ents will correspond as some do not have
e-mail access, but there are some who
will write back.
Children are encouraged to cre-
ate or write their own holiday
cards or notes to show support to
the troops. No last names,
addresses or phone numbers of
children.
Items will only be accepted on
Saturday, Dec. 7 in person. For
more information, please con-
tact Dave Silver at OperationYel-
lowRibbonSJ@gmail.com or vis-
it www.operationyellowribbon-
