Project Idea Summary

Enduring Understanding Driving How can we predict traits of future generations? Question

The students are creating family trees using probability to discover the process of heredity. They will learn how to make predictions on future outcomes of genes, traits, and genetic disorders. We are able to predict future generations using probability and data of genes and traits that are present in living things.

Culminating Product/Assessment Description Students will draw one male and one female. (These will represent the parents) Using their parents descriptive traits, students will create three descriptive family trees labeling recessive and dominant traits for each member. (1 theoretical tree, 1 Punnett Square tree, and 1 experimental tree) The students will create the experimental by drawing people and traits out of a bucket. The students will create the theoretical tree by selecting the trait with the highest probability. If the probabilities are equal, the students will get to select which trait is passed on. The students will create the Punnett Square tree based on the Punnett Square. The students will select the trait that has the highest probability using dominant and recessive genes. If the probabilities are equal, the students will get to select which trait is passed on. Students will construct a diagram of their three family trees.

Students will compare and contrast their three trees and create a 5-10 minute presentation explaining their findings. Phenotypes that each person must have: Height (Students will research and explain how height is passed down genetically) Hair color Hair texture (curly or straight) Eye color Left handed or right handed Freckles or no freckles Ears lobes Hitch hikers thumb Tongue rolling Flat feet All family trees must include the following: Three generations (grandparents, parents, and children) Proportions will be used to solve for percentages Using the data from each tree, each trait will be represented as a percent. How the percent is displayed is up to the groups. Label the phenotypes and genotypes of each person Correct labeling Presentation must include the following: Three family tree diagrams labeled and filled out with genotypes (dominant and recessive) One or more examples of mathematical problem solving using probability, proportions, and Punnett Squares A detailed explanation of which tree represents the most accurate data using scientific and mathematical language and reasoning The presentation may be presented in a video format, orally, or expressed as a skit. (Other suggestions are subjected to be approved by the teacher) Technology aspect The students must include a brief explanation of heredity Know Fraction Decimal Multiply/Divide Add/Subtract Generations Parents Organisms Need to Know Ratio Proportion Probability Simple and Compound Converting to Percent Make Inferences and Predictions Difference between Theoretical and Experimental Probability Graphical Display using Excel Genes

Entry Launch Description To engage our students in the new project, we will have a geneticist come and talk to the class about the importance of knowing your family history. He will lead off his speech by showcasing different types of genetic phenomenas and end with answering questions presented by the class.
