Words have been purposefully made up of multiple parts Affective (feel/value): 3. The varied definitions of word parts 4. Propaganda techniques in advertisements Performance (do): 5. Identify media literacy and root square terms Materials Needed: Laptop Projector Procedures/Instructional Strategies I. Bridge [15 mins.] Do Now: Pick up a handout on the counter. [Root Square WS] Classroom norms and expectations have been set at the beginning of the year so that students know to look at the board for their Do Now. This lessons Do Now indicates that students need to pick up a handout from the counter, which is a blank Root Square worksheet that students will fill out using the model on the board. The root square on the board is a literal square that contains color coded root words, prefixes, and suffixes and their definitions. This is the third set of root square terms these students have been exposed to, so they are familiar with the way root squares work in the classroom. After they have finished copying definitions and/or as students wait for their peers to finish writing down definitions, students are responsible for coming up with whole words using the set of terms. Afterwards, I go over the definitions of all the root terms, and we discuss the various words that students have come up with. Then students are assigned a range of 10-15 vocabulary words that use the root square terms. They are responsible for defining and applying those definitions of the vocabulary words. II. Steps [70 mins.] 1) The Raven [20 mins.] Some classes were unable to finish The Raven, so we will finish reading and listening to the poem. I will also show The Simpsons version of The Raven to

the classes who have not seen it yet. 2) Book Chat Assignment [10 mins.] Students will be assigned their second round of book chat due dates (12.2/3, B/T), and I will briefly discuss the book chat requirements, particularly for the sake of students who have difficulty following directions. I will ask students to come up with a book and author they would like to read by the next class. They will be responsible for writing down the book title and author on a paper that will circulate in the following class. 3) Media PowerPoint [25 mins.] Due to assemblies or pacing, some classes were not able to get to the media literacy terms from the previous class. This will be the period in which students take notes on all of the media literacy terms on the PowerPoint, which include (in addition to the previous list): practice, logo, cartoon characters, weasel words, subliminal, heartstrings, fun, facts & figures, scale, omission, product comparison, slogans, and value. 4) Library [20 mins.] 1T 9:20-9:50 4T 2:45-3:15 III.
