DESCRIPTION OF VARIOUS CONSECRATIONS (hile describing the significance of various consecrations' )ord "ishnu told *hiva that the union of man's sperm and woman's ovum results into the birth of a child. This union along with the whole process of foetus getting transformed into a baby is a lengthy affair during which it imbibes numerous impurities. +onsecrations purify a man from all these impurities. )ord "ishnu said --'The man!ind has been categori&ed into four prominent castes- ,rahmin' -shatriya' "aishya and *hudra. The former three castes are also !nown as '.wi$as' /Twice born. The solemni&ation of a consecration named 0agyopavit is believed to be their second birth.1 because only they are entitled to get consecrated into this particular ceremony. #ight from his birth till he ta!es his last breath' a '.wi$a' has to undergo various consecrations.' 2iving the names of some prominent consecration ceremonies that a .wi$a has to go through' )ord "ishnu said--'2arbhadhan *ans!ar is performed at the time of conception. The scriptures have clearly stated about the best time for a woman to conceive- twelve days after her menstruation has started' beginning from the fifth day as the first four days are not considered auspicious for this purpose. 'Punsavan sans!ar' is performed in the third month after conception while '*eemantonayan sans!ar' is performed in the si3th or eighth month after conception. After the birth of a child the consecration named '4at !arma' is performed while '5am !aran sans!ar' is performed on the eleventh day after his birth whereby the new born baby is given a name. '5ish!raman sans!ar' is performed in the fourth month and 'Annaprashan sans!ar' in the si3th month. The consecration named '+hudamani sans!ar' can be performed either in the first' third or fifth year of the child.' purify himself by properly washing his urinary organ with mud /soap1 and water. %e should also wash his hands and feet. The purification is believed to be incomplete until and unless the rituals of 'Achman' /ritualistic rinsing of the mouth1 have been performed. 5e3t morning' after having a bath' he should do 'Pranayama' and chant the sacred 2ayatri mantra facing east. In the evening he should chant 2ayatri mantra facing south. After this the ritual of ',hi!shatan' is performed whereby he see!s alms and donates everything that he gets to his 2uru as a mar! of respect to him. This particular ritual is symbolic and emphasi&es the absolute necessity of subduing one's ego before ac7uiring !nowledge from his 2uru. A celibate is supposed to wear nothing but a .eer s!in and a waist band made of long reeds on his person with a sacred thread hanging across his shoulder and carry a stic! in his hand. The celibate whose 6panayan sans!ar has been performed should stay at his 2uru's hermitage till he completes his education. It is also his duty to collect food grains from the neighbourhood to meet the food re7uirement of all the people living in the hermitage. A ,rahmin celibate should chant ',havati bhi!sham dehi' while see!ing alms whereas a -shatriya celibate should chant the same mantra with a slight modification ' ,hi!sham bhavati dehi'. *imilarly' a "aishya celibate should chant ',hi!sham dehi bhavati' while see!ing alms.' KESHANT SANSKAR After finishing his education the celibate should shave his beards and moustaches for the first time. *trict guidelines have been laid down for each caste with respect to this particular consecration. A ,rahmin should get consecrated with this ritual in his si3teenth year while a -shatriya should get it performed in his twenty-second year. *imilarly' a "aishya should get consecrated with this ritual in his twenty-fourth year. The above mentioned age limits are also the ma3imum before which respective castes are supposed to get consecrated with the sacred thread ceremony failing which he becomes a religious outcaste.
