epending on your point
of view, the 1960's were
a time of change,
excitement, or of dreadful
upheaval. Maybe a bit of all
of these.
With interior design,
however, the 60's were days
of creativity, imagination and
the willingness to try new
things, with new materials.
Modern shapes were pushing
against traditional ones, and
trying to make space for
expanding ideas in the look
of the home.
One of the best things for
people seeking vintage
pieces from this decade is
that there is such a wide
variety of styles to choose
from. Traditional, country-
home wood furnishings cosy
up against groovy chrome
and plastic in the pantheon
of collectable 1960's
furniture--each style is a
perfect example of the era.
Look at any Homes and
Gardens magazine from this
period for reference.
Maple, oak, teak and ply
were some of the popular
woods used, and G-Plan
furniture in the UK was one
of the style leaders, which is
easily available to collectors
now and look as good in a
modern home as they did
when they were first made.
Then there was the fun stuff.
Lots of bright coloured
plastic and chrome, with
designs that were both
minimalist and striking, and
using bold fabrics and
materials. Chairs that
resembled amoebic shapes
and tables that seem to defy
gravity. Many 1960s items
fall into the collectable
category, but what you
collect is more important
often than who designed the
item, as it still has to be lived
with, once you have brought
it home!
During the 60s ideas were
shared freely (or copied
widely) round Europe and
America, as the sense of
excitement snowballed in the
industry, so common features
appeared and were watered
down for the mass market.
Here are some of the
designers, whose authentic
furniture is worth looking out
for, though modern copies
are available.
Americans, Charles and his
wife Ray Eames who were
synonymous with Mid
Century design, produced
stylish and functional
furniture with clean lines,and
no extra embellishments.
Danish, Verner Panton,
whose designs came in bold
bright colours, as well as
stark white, mostly made in
light-weight plastics.
Italian, Joe Colombo was
another designer who
worked primarily in
plastics.His signature designs
were the Universale chairs,
(the first to be moulded using
only one material) and the all
in one Boby trolley.
Swedish, Arne Jacobson
designed the Swan and Egg
chairs, which are still as
popular today.
Collecting pieces from this
decade, has become more
fashionable over the last
twenty years, as modern
furniture designers look back
to this period of exceptional
creativity, and bring the spirit
of this extraordinary time,
into their work. People
realise how wonderful the
originals were, and that is
why they have earned
themselves the title of

During a recent visit to the beautiful Italian region
of Tuscany, Etcetera magazine has had the chance
to catch up with Boro legend Massimo
Maccarone.
We met Massimo in a restaurant near the town of
Certaldo, amongst the Chianti vineyards and the
picturesque hilltop villages dating back to the
renaissance, and had the opportunity to meet his wife
Jessica and beautiful daughter Ginevra, who is now over
a year old and full of mischief.
Massimo seems to thrive in Tuscany, where after a spell
playing for Siena and scoring overall 40 goals for the
club in serie A, in the last couple of years has been
playing for Empoli, the Team from which he came from
when he joined Middlesbrough. This time he has helped
the team, that in the 2011-12 season only managed to
avoid relegation to serie C, to the serie B play off final
last season scoring 17 goals on the way but missing out
on a return to serie A by a single goal, and this year is
once again playing his part to help keeping Empoli at the
top of serie B, and in pole position for a possible return to
the Italian top division.
Although his time at Middlesbrough had highs and lows
Massimo has not forgotten the fans at the Riverside, and
has asked Etcetera to bring his best wishes to everyone
on Teesside, where he hopes one day to visit once again
to enjoy a good Parmo!

Worsall Folk Dance Group

Print deadlines are sometimes so unfair -
I need to file this copy whilst waiting for
contact with Daniel Gerrard, a self confessed
addict who has set up a nationwide helpline
to help drink and drug addicts throughout
the country.
Unfortunately its dressed up as a local service
when it is nothing of the kind, and has taken
money from desperate people in the North East
at prices far higher than would be normal, and for
services which are often free on the NHS. I would
be interested in learning what the charitable
concerns working in this sector think, and will
be making contact with the reputable North East
Council on Addications, based at Swalwell, to see
what they have to say.

A desperate lady who we shall call Sarah
contacted me after being persuaded to spend
2,200 on a home detox course, lasting a
week. She was also quoted a higher figure for
counselling which was later revised upwards
by another addiction helper and after paying
3,000 in total for the detox and part of the
cost of the counselling, Sarah decided not to
proceed with the counselling and asked for her
800 back. She was initially told this could not be
processed for 14 days, and when this period was
up she made several calls to the company and
each time they had no record of her request for a
refund, even though she was speaking to the same
people and made a note of their names.
Sarah became more suspicious of the company
when she discovered that the North East helpline
freephone 0800 140 4825 was the same number
as used by the South East helpline freephone, also
08001404825andsoonaround the country. They
even claimed on their website to have an office in
Sarahs town. Meanwhile, ads for the company
populate Google and other search engines if you
look under addiction or alcoholism etc. Sarah
is now desperate to recover her 800 which is
money that she has borrowed, and enlisted my
help so I took a visit to the address on the website
which is given as in Park Road, London N2. This
happens to be an accountancy practice in East
Finchley, home to a much bigger corporate entity
which is no stranger to criticism, by the name of
McDonalds.
I spoke to the people at Accura accountants in East
Finchley and they have given me the mobile phone
number of Mr. Daniel Gerrard who has asked me
to call himjust after this magazine goes to press.
This addiction helper phone service, run under the
name Addiction Treatment Ltd purports to help
addicts who are often, like Sarah, in considerable
distress when they call. They are persuaded to
pay more than the market rate for advice and
counselling and considerably more than is charged
by the reputable rehabilitation clinics. I want
to know why these parasitic organisations are
allowed to trade, and am considering a referral to
the Care Quality Commission. Meanwhile, Sarah
just wants her 800 back after four weeks of
waiting.

Every weekday evening at 17.41,
a train leaves Chester-le-Street for
Winchester. To my knowledge,
no-one has ever boarded at
Chester-le-Street going to
Winchester, and the train is there
to bring home the commuters
from Newcastle, but it continues
via Darlington, York, Derby and
Birmingham to Southampton
Central by way of Winchester
which it reaches at 22.56, just
time to miss last orders but time to
check into your hotel before
midnight. I am happy to
recommend an hotel and a pub
B&B if you would like to stay: the
Winchester Hotel is in the top ten
on tripadvisor and is just north of
the railway station, about five
minutes walk, and the Westgate
Hotel is an imposing pub which
stands opposite the old West Gate
of the cityWinchester, pop 41,000
is a fascinating small city which
was once capital of England, a
position it gradually lost after the
Norman Conquest of 1066. Now
county town of Hampshire it has a
huge Gothic cathedral, home to a
university and famous public
school. A person who is from or
resides in Winchester is
sometimes locally known as a
Wintonian.The Saxon street plan
laid out by Alfred the Great is still
evident today: a cross shaped
street system which conformed to
the standard town planning
system of the day overlaying the

pre-existing Roman street plan.
The Domesday Book was
compiled in the city late in the
reign of William the Conqueror,
but did not cover the city itself.
The novelist Jane Austen spent her
last few weeks in Winchester and
died in Winchester on 18 July
1817 and is buried in the
cathedral, fifth window up on the
north side. Winchester Cathedral,
the longest cathedral in Europe,
was originally built in 1079. It was
once an important pilgrimage
centre and housed the shrine of
Saint Swithun, who was Bishop in
the 9th century. The ancient
Pilgrims Way travelling to
Canterbury begins at Winchester.
The earliest hammer-beamed
building still standing in England
is also situated in the Cathedral
Close, next to the Deans garden.
It is known as the Pilgrims Hall,
as it was part of the hostelry used
to accommodate the many
pilgrims to Saint Swithuns shrine.
Left-overs from the lavish
banquets of the Dean would be
given to the pilgrims who were
welcome to spend the night in the
hall. The city is well known for
the Great Hall of its castle, which
was built in the 12th century. The
Great Hall was rebuilt sometime
between 1222 and 1235, and still
exists in this form. It is famous for
King Arthurs Round Table, which
has hung in the hall from at least
1463. The table actually dates
from the 13th century, and as such
is not contemporary to Arthur.
Despite this it is still of
considerable historical interest
and attracts many tourists. The
table was originally unpainted,
but was painted for King Henry
VIII in 1522. Winchester College,
a boys public school founded by
William of Wykeham, still
occupies its original buildings
dating from 1382: two courtyards,
gatehouse, cloister, hall and a
large college chapel. The college
expanded considerably in
Victorian and later times, and now
has 10 boarding houses in
addition to College for the
scholars.I hope I have given an
impression of a fascinating historic
city which I have passed through
many times but never visited until
November 2013 and would
recommend for a visit any time of

Seamer Wind Farm Community
Fund
Ingleby Barwick Town Council
is anticipated to receive in the
region of 2,000 per annum
from the Seamer Wind Farm
Community Fund. The Town
Council, is responsible for
disbursement of their allocation
of the community fund;
decisions on fund allocations
are to be made following a
majority vote at full Council
meetings.
The Town Council would be
interested to hear any
ideas/suggestions from residents
on how the fund could be used
for the benefit of Ingleby
Barwick.
Anti Social Behaviour
There has been an increase in
the level of Anti Social
Behaviour over recent weeks,
particularly in the vicinity of the
main centre of Ingleby Barwick
as well as the parks/open space
areas.
Both Police and Enforcement
are dealing with a number of
issues.
Parents are requested to be
aware of where their children
are and what they are doing.
The Town Council would also
encourage residents to be extra
vigilant and report any matters
to Police and Enforcement on
the contact details provided
below.
Village 6, The Rings, Ingleby
Barwick
There have been a number of
concerns raised in respect of
cars using The Rings
development as a cut through to
avoid the peak time traffic
queues. It is noted that The
Rings is a residential area and
commuters are asked to stick to
the main through roads.
