(100 marks)
Instructions:
2. Answer all the six questions in Section A and any three questions from Section B.
3. All working must be clearly shown; it should be done on the same sheet as the
rest of the answer.

b. The base of a triangle is 3 cm longer than its corresponding height. If the area of
the triangle is 44 cm 2 , find the length of its base. (5marks)

b. A ship starts from port P and sails due north at 15 km/h. At the same time another
ship leaves from port Q, 15 km due east of P, and sails on a bearing of 340°. How
fast will the second ship have to travel if it is to meet the first ship?

11. a. A cylinder whose radius of its base is 7 cm and height is 5 cm is enlarged by a
scale factor of 4.
5
(i) Compute the volume of the cylinder.
(ii) Calculate the radius of the base and the height of the image cylinder.
(iii) Find the ratio of the volume of the image cylinder to the original cylinder.
Leave your answer correct to 2 decimal places. (Volume of a cylinder = πr2h, take
π ≈ 3.14). (7 marks)
b. n is the algebraic sum of two terms, one of which varies directly as u and the
other inversely as u 2 . If n = 11 when u = 2 and n = 25.16 when u = 5 , find the
value of n when u = 3 . (8 marks)
12. a. Solve the equation x 2 − 3 x − 2 = 3 , leaving your answer correct to two decimal
