Big or Essential Question: How can I learn about body parts, while improving fine/gross motor functioning?

Curriculum Standards: 10.5.3.A Recognize and use basic movement skills and concepts 1.6.PK.B: Speak in simple sentences. Share experiences when asked. 10.1.3.B Know the major body parts and systems

Lesson Objectives: Given MMOC the student will choose 6 body parts, each within 10 seconds, with no more than 3 prompts. Given 1/6 body parts, the student will grasp and then place the body part correctly within 10 seconds.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on how long it takes them to successfully choose body parts within 10 seconds each, when given MMOC3, and 3 or less physical or verbal prompts. o This will be recorded on the provided sheet in the first column Students will be assessed on their ability to grasp and place each of the 6 body parts within 10 seconds each, and with 3 or less physical or verbal prompts. o This will be recorded on the provided sheet in the second column.

Materials and Resources: Recording sheet 2 Build a Monster puppet sets o Includes eyes, noses, ears, teeth, arms, hair, etc Even More Parts By Tedd Arnold o In case theres extra time, More Parts By Tedd Arnold MMOC o Black 8 location o 3 Location

Procedures: Student will be introduced to the blank puppets One body part at a time, the students will make their selections using the MMOC o Student will indicate what body part they want to attach to the puppet body, and then will physically make their choice by pressing the corresponding tile on the communication device. Once student has indicated what body part they want to attach, they should then physically pick up that body part, and attach it to the puppet shell Repeat this process until all body parts have been attached to the puppet Then, if able, have the student put the puppet on their own hand, and read the body part book, referring periodically to the puppet to demonstrate the body parts that the book is referring to. o If student will not keep puppet on their hand, put it on your own, and still proceed to model the body parts using the puppet. o The story should be read to both students at the same time once they have both finished putting together their puppets.

Adaptations: A: 1. 3 body parts at a time, use the 3 location device to allow A to make selections as to which body part he will use. 2. After selection is made on 3 location device, put chosen item on tray, see if he will pick up on his own. a. If not on his own, place his hand on it, allowing for him to do the grabbing. b. May also help him with placement on puppet. An: 1. 3 body parts at a time, place choices in front of An, and ask her to choose a body part (you name the part) a. She should use one hand to select/pick the item up i. If prompting necessary, use script on tray table. 2. Once body part is selected/in her hand, hold puppet up for her so that she can place the piece. a. Use one hand to attach body part to puppet B: 1. 3 body parts at a time, use the 3 location device to allow B to make selections. 2. After selection is made on 3 location device, put chosen item on tray to see if he will pick up on his own. a. If not on his own, place his hand on it, allowing for him to do the grasping. b. May also help him with placement on puppet.

C: 1. Use 3 location device for 3 body parts at a time, to allow her to locate/grab the body part you name for her. a. When showing her the part on each location, present in circular motion so that she can find the object in her field of vision. 2. Once body part is selected/in her hand, hold puppet up for her so that she can place the piece on the puppet. a. Again, circular motion may be necessary for her to find the puppet in her field of vision. Co: 1. 3 body parts at a time, use the 3 location device to help Co make selections as to which body part she will use. 2. After selection is made on 3 location device, place the chosen item on her tray to see if she will pick up on her own. a. If not on her own, place her hand on or over it, allowing for her to grasp independently. b. May need to also help her with placement of items on puppet. M: 1. Use 3 location device for 3 body parts at a time, to allow her to locate/grab the body part you name for her. 2. After item has been picked up hold up puppet for her to place the item she has selected. a. You may also want to use a privacy screen to keep attention focused forward R: 1. Because R is verbal, prompt him to make choices verbally, as well as with 8 location device. a. i.e. when making his choice on the device, ask him to also say the item that he is selecting. b. Privacy screen may need to be used to keep attention on the task at hand. 2. He should be placing items on the puppet independently, and holding the puppet independently 3. If he tells you to stop or gives you a command or direction, tell him that it is not nice, and do not continue until apology is given a. You will need to prompt apologies, sometimes multiple times b. Mark any shut downs or attitude given in behavior column on recording sheet
