SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE FITTINGS

FABRICATED FITTINGS
There is no ASTM for fabricated fitting dimensions. However, the pipe used to fabricate Northern Specialtys fittings comply with AWWA C906-90 and ASTM D-1 248 requirements for Type III, Class C, Category 5, Grade P3408 polyethylene material. Other reference specifications include: ASTM 714, ASTM D-3350, ASTM D-3035. Mitered fittings are manufactured from angular cut pipe segments. Due to this configuration, stresses are greater than those imposed on pipe of the same size and DR. In order to supply mitered fittings that will meet or exceed the design pressure of the piping system, Northern Specialty will manufacture the fittings(s) from heavier wall pipe 25% greater than that of the pipe. The fitting outlet ends may be machined to the desired DR. Fabricated fittings intended for use in industrial non-pressure and/or low pressure services shall be manufactured from the same diameter and DR rating as used in the piping system. The pressure rating of these fittings is approximately 75% of straight pipe of the same DR. Fabricated fittings can be supplied with either flanged, screwed, grooved and/or plain end for field butt fusion to the piping system. Northern Specialty can also fiberglass wrap the fitting(s) and/or remove the internal bead when needed.

INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS
Fabricated fittings require that certain precautions be taken when installing them into a piping system. Northern Specialty recommends that the installer use spreader bars or nylon straps to help prevent damaging mitered fittings. It is strongly recommended that for installations involving long sections of butt fused pipe, the fittings should have at least one end flanged on the main, to allow for post assembly alignment.

TESTING
AWWA When needed for AWWA, fittings shall be prepared and tested according to ASTM D1598 test method. The fitting shall survive, without failure, a test pressure of four (4) times the pipe pressure class when the test pressure is applied for five (5) seconds. Fittings will comply with AWWA C901, C906, and AWWA Section 4.5.1, 4.5.2., 2.2.9., 2.2.1.. The first fitting of a particular size and configuration made during a production run, and thereafter every fiftieth fitting, will be subjected to the five-second pressure test. Custom testing required by end user. Northern Specialty will test fittings as needed by the end user.

Quality Assurance. Northern Specialty will comply with fusion procedures set forth by the pipe manufacturer(s), fusion equipment manufacturer(s), Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations 192.283, Plastic Pipe Institute TR-33, AWWA Section 2.4.2., and ASTM D3261. The use of McElroy DataLoggers for fusion monitoring shall be used in production runs for 6 - 63 fittings. Northern Specialty shall take adequate measures in the checking of incoming pipe to ensure the pipe is free of cuts, scratches and other damages. Each fitting shall be visually checked inside and outside for defects. Any presence of defects shall be cause to reject the fitting. .

MARKING REQUIREMENTS
Marking on the fitting shall include the following whenever possible: a. Nominal size and OD base (such as 12 in. IPS) b. Standard material code designation (such as PE3408) c. Dimension ratio (such as SDR-17) d. Pressure class (such as PC40) e. AWWA designation number (AWWA C906-90) f. NSS production code
