Danielle Rogers Complete Metamorphosis Description: In this lab, students will learn the stages of complete metamorphosis.

Subject: Science Grade: 4th Duration: 45 minutes Objectives: Students will be able to: Identify the stages of complete metamorphosis. Create a model of complete metamorphosis. Demonstrate the correct order of compete metamorphosis Materials: Paper plates ar!ers"Crayons Pasta #rice,rotini,shells, and bow$tie% &lmer's (lue Scissors #optional% (reen paper for lea)es #optional% *ole$punch #optional% +arn or string #optional% Safety Concerns: Students will be using scissors, so be sure to tell the students to be careful and ne)er wal! or run with scissors. If students ha)e to wal! with scissors, tell the students to carry the scissors with the pointed side down to a)oid in,uries. Students will also be using uncoo!ed pasta, so be sure to tell the students not to consume the pasta. Students should also not consume &lmer's glue. If using a hole$punch, be sure to tell students to be careful with the hole$punch, and not to stic! any fingers in the hole$punch.

Procedure: -o begin this lab, I would ha)e students read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by &ric Carle. Inform the students that today they are all going to ma!e the life cycle model of a butterfly. . butterfly has a complete life cycle with four stages: egg, lar)a, pupa, and adult butterfly. &/plain that they are going to ma!e a diagram for the life cycle using pasta. (i)e each student a paper plate.

*a)e students di)ide the paper plate into 4 e0ual sections. Students can write 1Complete etamorphosis2 at the top of the paper plate. 3sing a mar!er and ha)e them write out the names of the four stages on the paper plate. 1.dult2 in the top left, 1&gg2 in the top right, 1Pupa2 in bottom left, and 14ar)a2 in the bottom right. Draw arrows cloc!wise from 1&gg2 to 14ar)a2 and from 14ar)a2 to 1Pupa2 and so forth. *a)e students cut out 5 lea)es. (lue one lea)e under 1&gg2 and one lea)e under 14ar)a2 Put a dot of glue on the lea)e under 1&gg.2 -a!e a pinch of rice and drop it on the glue for the egg. Put a dot of glue on the lea)e under 14ar)a2 Place one rotini on the lea)e. Put a dot of glue under 1Pupa2 Place one shell on the glue for 1Pupa2 Put a dot of glue under 1.dult2 Place the bow$tie on the glue for the adult butterfly.
