IMPORTANCE OF PROFILE IN MBA ADMISSIONS // BEFORE BEGINNING WITH MY SET OF ARGUMENTS I WOULD LIKE TO STATE THE FACT CLEARLY

THAT ALL THE ARGUMENTS THAT I AM ABOUT TO PUT FORWARD ARE PURELY MY UNDERSTANDING AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN TO HEART INCASE YOU FIND YOURSELF AT RECEIVING END. IT IS JUST SOMETHING I HAVE SEEN AND BASED ON THE PROCESS I HAVE BEEN THROUGH AND ALSO LITTLE BIT OF ANALYTICS OF A MBA MIND AND EXPERIENCE OF BEING THROUGH MBA PROCESS OF SIP (SUMMER INTERNSHIP). //

Year on year many aspirants who add themselves in the race for the prestigious MBA institutes often find themselves out of the race even before the race begins . The reason primarily behind such an occurrence is a term called Profile. It is said generally that if u work hard and get a good percentile in any exam it means that you have proved your supremacy over other candidates appearing in the exam and hence deserve to be part of the best colleges , companies etc which had originally conducted the test for selection . Well analytically there is no flaw in the logic behind the argument presented above. But then in reality there are lots of gaps. With rising population and ever increasing literacy , it has become very essential for most institutes to come out with a more through short listing criterions so as to comb out the best of the best candidates not just on the basis of the test results but also on the basis of consistency in results secured before appearing in the test. Since the applicant pool is large , while the test is a 2 hour affair which might not be enough or justified to prove the mettle of a candidate , profile started to gain prominence. And now as we step into 2014 , 5 years since the profile system was aggressively implemented , the current prominence and requirement of Profile speaks for itself. Selection into Colleges First lets classify top 10- 15 colleges based on profile requirements on the basis of call criterion and then final selection criterion:

Profile considered in Selection post gd and interview XLRI , NITIE , FMS , IIM C , IIM L ,NMIMS , IMT , SIBM,SCHMRD , TISS

Do not consider profile as a major impact and go ahead with scores obtained in test MDI , NMIMS ,IIFT

Well it is not just academics which comes into consideration . Gender diversity , caste based reservation , background based diversity are all important parameters that influence the admission process of any mba schools. Just to make the context more global . Please find the class composition data of one of the medium range US b schools .

Impact of Profile on Placements Well once selected then also the misery does not end . Most top companies shortlist students on the basis of scores in 10th 12th and graduation . Quality and type of graduation colleges also matter. For top investment banking companies 10th 12th requirement is very high and preferably IIT background is needed for an interview shortlist. For other majors from FMCG and Retail sector a good background (90+ 10th 12th and a healthy graduation percentage ) becomes critical for shortlist. Source: Purely based on observation in XLRI . However the above doesnot take into consideration huge cv points like NIT , IIT , AIIMS who inspite of below 80 get day 0 call . But in general with no exceptional cv point like the above . Usually people have to make do with the above pattern.
