ECOTEL is a certification that enables hotels to become s u s t a i n a b l e b y p r i m a r i ly reducing the environmental impact of their business and grow financially more viable and socially responsible. Managed by HVS Sustainability, ECOTEL was developed in 1994. Since then, it has evolved in keeping with advances in global warming, resource conservation, pollution prevention, building standards, and social responsibility. Today, its criteria are commensurate with those internationally recognised for sustainability. Certification Eligibility and Validity Applicable to any hotel irrespective of the applicant hotel's country of origin. Valid for a period of two years after which member h o te l s m u s t a p p ly fo r recertification.

The ECOTEL Methodology Five Globes The ECOTEL methodology evaluates a hotel's practices, systems, and processes for sustainability through five crucial areas or 'The Five Globes', which in turn comprise of a number of indicators.

The Sustainability Matrix


A growing number of players define the certification market today, each with their strengths. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is considered among the leading certifications worldwide for construction of green buildings. ECOTEL, in addition to valuing green buildings, is proactive and responsive to day-to-day hotel practices that lead to more sustainable operations. It also trains staff on operationalising sustainability while building symbiotic linkages in the community. Meluha The Fern is both LEED and ECOTEL certified.

Rating System Each of the Five Globes comprise Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary points. To qualify for the certification, it is mandatory for a hotel to fulfill the Primary Criteria under each of the Globes. At the time of audit, a minimum of 40% must be scored under each globe. Tertiary points are given on account of a hotel's innovative measures. P A Proposal sent by ECOTEL has to be signed after mutual agreement to the terms. Primary Criteria for eligibility to the certification have to be adhered to. Audit by ECOTEL team, which involves a property walkthrough and interviews with hotel staff that will inform you where your asset stands with respect to the sustainability pathway. If the hotel is found to score high on the Five Globes, it is awarded the certification. If not, it is enabled for certification through a customised blueprint, which comprises the next steps. Training of staff by the ECOTEL Team on sustainable practices for achieving the certification. Handholding and target setting for scoring high on the Secondary Criteria and, thus, qualifying as an ECOTEL. Way Ahead progress monitoring in readiness for the certification. Audit for Final Certification to ensure that the property complies with the sustainability criteria. Yes!
