Warm-Up:

In your own words, describe the pattern you see in this piece of art. How was it created?

Unit 4 Lesson #1
(Textbook 4-1 and 4-2)

Proving Triangles Congruent

SSS & SAS

Naming Polygons
Polygons are given their names by picking ANY letter from a vertex followed by the consecutive vertices in either the clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
Possible names for the polygon to the right: ABCDE BCDEA CDEAB DEABC EABCD AEDCB BAEDC CBAED DCBAE EDCBA

Congruent Polygons (pg. 180)

Any polygons that are the same size and shape. Criteria for Congruent Figures: 1) Corresponding segments are congruent. 2) Corresponding angles are congruent. Note: Orientation (direction they face) does NOT matter.

Corresponding Parts
The segments and angles that are congruent to each other in congruent figures.
Corresponding Sides: AB DE AC DF BC EF Corresponding Angles: A D B E C F

Writing Congruency Statements Letters of Corresponding parts must be written in the same position.

If CAMP SITE, then:

CA SI and
C S

Example #1: If MON DAY, mark the figures to show the congruent parts. Name the corresponding angles and sides. A O M
Corresponding Sides: MO DA ON AY MN DY

N Y

Corresponding Angles: M D O A N Y

Theorem 4-1 (pg. 181)

If two angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of another triangle, then the third angle of each triangle must also be congruent.

So, C F.

Example #2: Proving Congruency and Writing Congruency Statements

Can we prove that the two triangles are congruent? If the answer is yes, write a congruency statement.

Yes - all corresponding angles and sides are congruent.

Example #3: Using Congruency to Find Missing Parts

If HAT CEK, find the missing measures below.

Two Shortcuts for Proving Triangles Congruent

Side-Side-Side (SSS) Postulate (pg. 186)

If the three sides of one triangle are congruent to the three sides of another triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
GHF PQR because GH PQ, HF QR, and FG RP.

Example #4: Using the SSS Theorem to Prove Triangles Congruent

Side-Angle-Side (SAS) Postulate (pg. 188)

If two sides and the angle between them of one triangle are congruent to two sides and the angle between them of another triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
ABC EFD because BC FD, CA DE, and C D .
